It would be Halo 2 or Reach for me. I liked the unique perspective playing as the Arbiter and seeing the covenant's view of things in Halo 2, but the multiplayer and customization in Halo Reach was fantastic. and it also had a pretty decent campaign.
I love all of them... but if I had to choose, have to go with the first one (although a lot of that is nostalgia).
3. was my most anticipated. And the day it came out I popped it in my 360 and I got the RROD at the loading screen.... Made me wait another month but I loved the game.
Halo 2, used to watch my older brother play it with his mate (he didn't let me play unfortunately lol) and I couldn't wait for the day I got to play.
Halo 2 for me. I never played the originals back in the day and only started with the MCC. But I loved seeing events from the Arbiter's point of view and the political turmoil the Covenant was going through made for an enjoyable story for me.
In my opinion, Halo 3 was where I had the most fun with the franchise. I remember on launch day, 4 of us stayed up all night to beat the campaign even though we all had to work. Then I remember getting into the MP which was the only Halo competitive MP that I really liked a lot. Everything just worked great for Halo 3 imo.
The first game by a huge margin.
I used to think that but after playing some of the MCC I now think it's one of the worst. Some of the levels are just a cut and paste job repeated over and over.
I'd say Halo 2 or 3 is the best now.
Halo 2 for me, I love all the games but the second one I had the most memories and most fun playing. :D
This is really hard to answer, campaign wise i would have to say Halo: CE, Multiplayer Wise Halo 3, i love all halo games but if i had to pick a favorite it would be Halo 3, so many fun times playing System link games with my cousins and my brother
@MarcRecon: Same here I very much enjoyed the ODST campaign.....the night missions had a distinct atmosphere and I enjoyed the mystery aspects of it, finding clues and seeing the flashbacks.
Halo 3. The game is beautiful, even by today's standards. And replaying it in 1080p and 60 frames on the MCC, it was jaw-dropping. It is also the best Halo game imo when it comes to level design. Halos 2 & 4 were quite restrictive in your traditional corridor shooter sense. Halos 1 & 3 seem to be the larger "open world" experience, with Halo 3 being the grandaddy of them all. From the explorational freedom to the vehicle levels and the tons of weapons, Halo 3 stands out to me as the best in the series. Hopefully Halo 5 can follow 1 & 3 in its level design.
Halo 2 coop campaign + #1 for multiplayer.
Halo CE for solo Campaign
Halo 3. #2 for multiplayer.
Halo 4 second best solo campaign.
.....
.....
Halo Reach
I'm surprised to read so many comments saying Halo CE had the best campaign. As I said before I'm playing them in order on MCC, and Halo 2's campaign is so much more epic and larger in scale and length. You get to see things from the Covenant's point of view, and play as a second main character.
I wonder if nostalgia is playing a part in people's fondness of the game, because before I started the MCC I too thought CE was the best campaign, but not now. Halo 2 is superior in so many ways when compared to Halo CE. Microsoft really went all-out on that game.
for replayability and story i would have to say Halo 1. it was just a total marvel to see enemy AI, graphics, new types of weapons, etc at that level at that time.
after spending many, many overnight rampages up drunk as hell playing co-op split-screen through 2004, 2 is a very close call though.
the next one that even reminded of those two was Halo 4. i tried Reach and 3 on friend's systems but was not impressed in the slightest. recently seeing 4 on a friends xboxone i was impressed. MP looked like shit, like it was made on a totally different engine though.

you have to take when they were released into consideration. going by your standards the newest games would be the best becasue of better graphics and more options in multiplayer. i really couldn't stand 3 or Reach though. a sequel is always riding on the back of it's predecessor. it being 3 years later, 2 is exactly what i would've expected. and not that much of a ground breaker in comparison. as awesome as it was.
1) Halo 3 - Decent matchmaking and campaign. What really makes this my favorite is the introduction of Forge. Some of my best moments in gaming came from playing custom games with friends/strangers. The maps people created were insane.
2) Halo 2 - Best matchmaking in the series and my first online experience. Also met some cool people through this game.
4) Halo: Reach - Best campaign in the series and decent matchmaking.
5) Halo: CE - Great campaign and fun (albeit unbalanced) multiplayer. Game is still a blast to play.
5) Halo 3: ODST - I really enjoyed this game, but there wasn't a lot of content here to justify the $60 price tag.
6) Halo 4 - It was alright.

As far as video game stories go, Halo 2 is pretty good and probably the best in the series (I personally prefer ODST's character driven story myself). The reason I'd put it close to the bottom is level design. There's a lot of indoor, linear corridors in that game that makes it all feel a little claustrophobic - particularly the Arbiter levels.
Halo: CE can get a bit repetitive, but the larger open levels gave the player a little more freedom moving through them. I think tonally Halo: CE was a little more on point as well. The introduction of the flood was damn near perfect.
1. Halo 2 - it was the one that made me fall in love with the series .
2. Halo 4 - I still don't know why many Halo fans didn't like it .
3. Halo CE
4. Halo 3
5. Halo Reach
