I heard about the dangers of dust inside the xbox--and i've heard that it can kill your xbox. But i still don't undertstand how it can ruin your xbox.are the effects of dust the same as smoke damage? The game slows down and the memory is bugged?

Wouldn't worry about it... The average life expectancy of an xbox due to other mechanical issues is way shorter than any serious long term effects that dust would cause.
Only clear cut way of cleaning dust is acutally opening the system up and blowing it "OUT" of the system, which voids any warrenties. Blowing Air into the vent ports blows dust "INTO" the system. Which can be more detramental to the core systems. If your xbox breaks down, I would highly doubt it was due to dust.

Not true at all
In a year there can be enough dust drawn into a device that will make it's temps rise up to 10 degrees
All you need to do is blow air into the unit from the disc tray opening and if you have an older Elite the sides. You should never put a vacuum on the fan openings because they'll burn out the bearings in the fan.
Compressed air cleaning should be part of the regular dusting you do around components
