My second most favorite genre in my gaming career is the story-based first person shooters (after RPGs of course). You know, a FPS with good and engaging story, most of the time lengthy as well. Here is my list:

6. Half-Life 2/The Orange Box

Yes. The Fallout series is my favorite of all time. I did not mention it here, since this is was more related and intended towards the pure FPShooters that also provide a good and engaging story. Nice list you got there.

I'm guessing by story-based you mean story-driven? Focusing only on the campaign? Assuming I have that correct, here is my list:

I only have 9 because I feel that those are the FPS games I've played with good stories. I've played others, but wouldn't rank them on any "top" list.

Also, and just to nit-pick a little, the Mass Effect series is not FPS. I know some games can be FPS or 3PS, but to my knowledge, ME isn't one of them.

Never played Crysis 1/2 or Metro. Fallout/Mass Effect are more RPG than FPS. ME isn't even first person. Call of Duty... no. Halo Reach story was crap imo. Characters were cheesy and generic.

You guys badly need to check out Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. The guys who made the Darkness made it. It has two games: an updated version of the 2004 Xbox game Escape from Butcher Bay and the sequel, Assault on Dark Athena. I know it's based on a movie franchise (and a **** one at that), but the games are much, much more interesting. The story is original and serves as a prequel to the movie plots. The original game pioneered first person hand-to-hand combat like you see in the Condemned games and it has great shooting and RPG-esque moments as well. Check it out, you can get it used for like $10. It always got great marks from those who played it, but everybody else just assumed it would suck because of the movies.
