Hi everyone, first of all i would like to point out that i am not against the 360 and that i am also not a fan-boy of Nintendo or Sony, i own a 360, a Ps3 and a Wii, and find each to be fun entertaining and unique in there own ways.

Anyway i have noticed that since the release of the 360 good single player game have almost vanished, why would you say this you may be asking? well I'll tell you Xbox Live, 90% of the Good games that have come out on the 360 (exclusives or not) have all been more focused on multi-player, now is this a bad thing? Yes and No, Multi-player add so much replay value to a game that it is quite often needed but look at Halo 3, Halo 3's Campaign was so short you could finish it in under a day and still have a good 4-5 hours left before midnight and whether you like it or not the storyline for it could have been ALLOT better, and yet they have these awesome multi-player maps and Forge mode (which not main people use) that look like they have had alot more time spent on them than the main campaign.

I also feel the same about Gears of War, not about it having a bad storyline but about it been cut way too short and then having a multi-player added to make the game last longer. So i was wondering where all the good single player games have gone, now obviously everyone has deferent tastes and may find some of the single player games to be fun but for me i have only found two Obilivion and Mass Effect, i have also knotest that the Ps3 has started to slowly fall down the same path as the 360 and im starting to think that one day soon there will be no such thing as a single player games, and when that day comes it will be a sad day for gamers.

And i also think that most of you will aggree with me now that we have lost xbox live for an undetermind ammount of time that companys need to start working of some more longer and better single player games for when problems like this happen because a lot of 360 owners i know only have muli-player games and so dont have anything to play now, because they dont think that single player games are at the same standard

Anyway that all i have to say, feel free to respond and voice your oppionion of wether or not you think that the muliplayer originaly just added to make games that bit more fun is becoming more important and ruining single player games or not.

I think you are speaking crap. Single player games will never go away, if they did then the gaming companies would lose so much money and would be making a mistake. Yeah the point of online is to extend the game, making for more fun, and lasting longer. But just because the single player itself is short doesnt mean its a bad game, or that it has no replay value. Right now is a good time for people to go back and finish games they left behind, and to just replay older fun games. Like right now Im playing R6:Vegas. Its a blast, Co-op is so much fun. even single player is fun. I dont know what you are talking about. but you need to go sit in the corner.

You forget bioshock...but I see where you are going. But this isn't due to XBL, it's due to publishers seeing that games with good multiplayer simply get better numbers.

i only agree w/ you in part. i mean i think the games industry it'self (not just the 360) is starting to oversaterate and shoot it'self in the foot w/ all of these games being based around multie player, and guns, and boobs. bioshock is a towering example of how round characters and an engagin narative can drastically improve a games quality, espeshally when most developers are perfectly willing to bypass story all togethor. i mean when you think about it, the game wasn't all that innovative in terms of cheap and gimmiky things, it was more focused on telling a story, and basing that story around an interactive medium, and therefor pushed gaming one step forward into becoming an art form. but if we keep having these call of duty 4's and doax2's then gaming will probably never gain a new audience past the 18-32 year old straight male demographic, and eventually even they will get bored of the same terrorists, zombies and boobs being turned out onto the masses.

it's not just the single player game that is dying, but gaming as a legitimate medium.

I disagree. I think the target audienece of the 360 ruined single player games. Most people where I live that play 360 are people who play the games multiplayer ALL THE TIME. In fact, most of them have never even tried the single player campaign on Halo 3, Call of Duty 4 or many other awesome games. The 360 itself hasn't killed single player. In fact, Bioshock is one of the greatest single player games I've ever played in my entire life, and Gears of War is an amazing achievement in single-player FPS. But I agree with you, that with more 360 players comes more denial of single-player games. But as long as games like Bioshock keep being released, I'm completely satisfied.

exactly, i suppose the reason i blame the 360 is because the problem has increased since 360 cameout(seeing as how it's the 360 that introduced alot of people to online games) and all the time i see people saying "i'll only buy such and such if it has good muliplayer" so companys focus on muliplayer and slap on some half assed campain, and yeh i forgot about Bioshock that was one hell of a good game because it focust on it's story instead of just throwing somthing together and making an online mode.

how can you say assissin's creed was good it was just climb up a tower, save a villager, repeat 100 time, kill target, repeat last 4 steps.

yer i understand where you are coming from but think there are games that have a very good singal player mode, and games which have a "alright" singal player mode. But think if you was making a game you would focus on multiplayer more because alot of people play multi-player more than singal player (unless you have NO friends at all). Just buy the games that are recommended for singal player for the like of bioshock mass effect and oblivion just there is over 200 hours game play. Then when you get bored put in the multi-player games like halo cod4 and gears of war. so there you have both good multiplayer and good singal player nothing then to moan about.

also i would like to add is that i thought halo 3 and cod4 story line was very good :)

The problem is we need a stead flow of good multiplayer games and good single player games not 100 good muli-player games and 5 good single player games like we got in '07.

I sort of understand the point that the person whom started this topic is trying to make. I have Call of Duty 4, just sitting in my XBOX, because Live is down. I want to play it online. But since I can't, you would think that I would play the Campigan. Well, nope. I'm not I don't feel like it. =)

i think your right about this....

this is basicly what i was saying. the target audiance for some unknown reason is this beer drinking, porn watching fratboy demographic. girls i know, when they talk about games, they talk about old NES titles that were simple, and fun just the way they are, the only thing developers have ever needed to improve upon since 1998 has been narative, and almost no one has taken a step forward in this regard. infact when you think about games like COD4 it's basicly a step backwards.

I i said in another post, i guess i just blame the 360 more because the problem is more persistant here and alot of people have only started playing online since the 360 came out and alot more games have been mainly built for multi player on the 360.

yeah it is a shame really that multiplayer is becoming the main thing in games, and the single player campaigns are suffering for it. Take CoD4, campaign is 5 hours long, and you're expected to make up the rest of the £40 you paid playing online. I mean, its an awesome game, and the multiplayer is fun, but i just don't enjoy MP as much as I do SP.

So what do you call Blue Dragon,Eternal Sonata, Bioshock,Enchanted Arms, Viva Pinata, Kameo, and future titles like Fable 2, Lost Odyssey, Ninja Gaiden (the 1st one didn't have a good online so i don't think this one will be focused on online).

Halo games have always had a huge focus on multiplayer. If you didn't notice lan parties for consoles really didn't exsist until the xbox and halo gave it that monumental boost (i say LAN party because i mean LAN party and not 4 people on a console playing multiplayer).

Shooters have had a large focus on online for quite some time. Those shooters that started multiplayer were from the PC and when i think about it doesn't Microsoft have something to do with the PC?

Games like gears of war could have been single-player games only, but the choice to be primarily focused online comes from the developer and have you not noticed how Epic is a developer focused on multiplayer game?

The two game examples you gave (that i read) are games that have always or the companies have always had a large focus on multiplayer.

I don't really see a decline in single-player games, but a decline in length of single-player games. Final Fantasy games can last to 60 hours, but i have yet to find an RPG or any game on thexbox consolesthat has broken 40 and that was Kotor (i mean one play through and i only know the number 40 for kotor because it is what i heard so i can't prove that). I am not counting the open world of the games because that will last forever, but i mean main story (so Oblivion does not have a 200 hour long story).

I won't lie and will agree with you that single-player games need to become a larger part of games, but this is the same thing with split screen multiplayer. Many people talk about how it is missing yet i look at all the FPS games on the 360 and they have it (that i have played or rented). Yes some shooters don't have split screen, but would you want to play a 3rd person shooter like Gears with 4 people on the screen? it sucks enough for Halo and that is an FPS.

well most of the games that you mentioned as single player games are RPGs, and many people, myself included, think that RPGs are boring and pointless. Now an FPS with a 20 hour campaign would be awesome.

and the award for post with the most thought given goes too.........

DMC4 might be ok but im not holding my breath with it been crossplat, and as for Enix unless there planning on making either a final fantasy or a kingdom hearts game for the 360.....well we will have to see, because the best games they have been releasing have all been remakes, the new games havn't been as good, but who knows till the new ones are out.

I allready talked about Oblivion and Mass Effect

Assassins Creed is boring unless you like a game that give you 3 things you can do and makes you do them over and over

Bioshock is good

Skate lol you must have been bored to even think of playing it

Gears of War is too much focust on multiplayer and the single player looses out

Vegas same as gears

Kameo why anyone would play that i dont know

Crackdown you can finish it in a day (i did) and then just keep it for the halo 3 beta

GTA4 cannot be counted as it's not out yet and therefore has no proof of weather or not it will be a good game

Most of your argument is built around your opinion...

You dont have logical reasons to back up your arguments, i agree with you some what about gears and rainbow six vegas, but they do have very strong single player modes that is sometimes rare for multiplayer focuses shooting games.

Even though there are some great single player games out and coming out, it is obvious to me that the focus on multiplayer has taken something away from single player games. I am not a big MP fan but I'm going to try to get into it more. I feel like I'm missing something good.

I agree with you to a certain point. It does seem like game producers have gotten a little lazy with the creation of storylines as of late. Except for games like Bioshock which I love. I know a lot of others have already mentioned that game but I didn't want to get yelled at for not mentioning it. :P Although I have Live I don't play online all that much, I definately prefer single player. I also hate how some games have a lot of achievements as online ones. Some of those I will NEVER get because I can't defeat all the prepubescents who play 24/7.

GTA4 cannot be counted as it's not out yet and therefore has no proof of weather or not it will be a good game

Most of your argument is built around your opinion...

You dont have logical reasons to back up your arguments, i agree with you some what about gears and rainbow six vegas, but they do have very strong single player modes that is sometimes rare for multiplayer focuses shooting games.

gears and vegas had good storys, but they were too short and theyre mainly for mp now, bioshock is amazing, skate only appeals to skater, so i like it, kameo is just bad, crackdowns fun, assassins creed is not that good, mass effect i have, but havent played yet and i didnt care for oblivion....but once again, this is all just opinion....people that enjoy multiplayer over sp probably outway those that prefer sp, so companies will continue to focus on the area where theycan make the most money....

I know, the 360's single player games are terrible. Just look at Bioshock and Mass Effect:roll:bluem00se

those are only 2 games versus thedozens of multiplayer focused games....

I do understand what your saying. Back when multiplayer was little or didnt even exist singe player was very long. Games had like 20-30 levels + in them. I do wish they would go back to really long single player games but since xbox live has gained so many subscribers they NEED multiplayer to be emphasized

The problem is we need a stead flow of good multiplayer games and good single player games not 100 good muli-player games and 5 good single player games like we got in '07.spike6958

I think your heavily exaggerating the single-to-multiplayer ration. There's games like Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Guitar Heros 2 and 3 and Rock Band, Orange Box, most the arcade games.... and those are the fairly recent ones.

If anything, Xbox Live has enhanced the single player experience by allowing connectivity to the community even though you're playing solo.

Now we're at a point where the term single player has to be distinguished between from the term campaign... since a growing trend is to play the campaign cooperatively online.

what a dumb thing to say dont use the word "we" not everyone is brainless.

Anyway that all i have to say, feel free to respond and voice your oppionion of wether or not you think that the muliplayer originaly just added to make games that bit more fun is becoming more important and ruining single player games or not.

well,

i like to think to myself that the 360 introduced more people into online games. its fun and alot of people prefer to play with other people instead of a computer all the time. i think you are right that developers are focussing alot more on multiplayer now because they realize the market value in it. you on the other hand realize that it affects the single player aspect of the game. if the trend continues, alot of other people like yourself who enjoy the single player aspect of games may stop buying ones that are single-player-deficient. this would cause less games to sell and companies would lose the market they originally began developing for. hopefully theres alot like you, that way the loss would be enough to make them begin to focus on the single player again. i know i am, and i was disappointed with halo 3's singleplayer. Anyway, when they realize this loss, chances are they will begin to focus on the single player games again. You gotta think though, which is more economical? designing a game for one person? or for many? hopefully theres enough money to go around for a nice single player, because lets face it, designing simple multiplayer games cost less money, and many people like simple games.

One company already figured this out....

it's not anyone's fault but the people who make the games, they only make games the way they do thinking what THEY think will sell, not exactly what we want. take halo 3 as an example, bungie added more modes and features to try and make something new that people will want to buy. so they could be thinking "sure most shooters have MP, but OUR game has replay saves, up to 4 player co-op online, and forge mode!!" since those features rarely come by in console games. case in point, there are devs who make great fantastic single player games such as 2K (bioshock, Elder Scrolls), but many people rave about multiplayer so devs balance what they want to make for their own profit and what the consumer REALLY wants.

a PERFECT example of this is the rumor that 2K is making a Elder Scrolls MMORPG, which mixes both the amazing formula of the ES series and the trendy multiplayer aspect. this targets both the online and offline consumer.

I strongly disagree, hard to argue this when you have titles such as Mass Effect and BioShock. Not to mention great online games with a solid story mode.

Dont wanna be pedantic but 2k is the publisher. Bethesda makes the Elder Scroll series, 2k just publishes the copies.

I partially agree with you. I am disappointed to see that so much focus has shifted to multiplayer (honestly i don't care for most online games on live...coop and multiplayer with friends is fun but i don't find it fun with random people, way to many people online are just obnoxious and irratating).

There are still good single player experiances out there (See Biochock, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Assasins Creed (it was fun for a while athough it did get old kinda quick).

Do i feel ripped off when i pick up a shooter and can finish it in 6-8 hours? Yes, but it is kind of understandable. Until some big innovations are made there is only so much a shooter can do and i suppose i'd rather be wowed for 6 hours and have a mediocre, repetitive 20 hour game...
