got a new xbox elite and it gets real hot. my A/C is set to 77 degrees and it has a good ventilation. But it heats up after 40 or so minutes. I'm afraid of the RROD greatly. Am i to worry?

What feels hot to you could be normal to me. So I can't say.

i pretty sure all non modded 360s heat up after 40 mins or so. if you got a new elite you should be good on not getting rrod, but i would recommend laying the 360 horizontal and not on carpet. i think it heats up faster vertical because gravity is pulling on the disc, and carpet makes it hotter and may block vents.

Does installing games to the hard drive make it so the system generates less heat?

indeed and as far as the vertical goes im pretty sure its soley the main vent the xbox drags air from is blocked ...imagine that lol but anywho check the power block to see what voltage and wattage numbers you have ....wattage or DC output should be at 150w or 175w for the better hardware inside ...also another check and conformation for that will be on the back of the xbox with something looking like 12v---12.1A or whatever ...lower the second number on that reading the better and i believe 12.1A is the lowest at the moment and you shouldnt have to worry about anything .....and even if there is a hardware failure youve got a 3 year e74 and RROD error warranty ...just dont tamper with her lol ...GL

I wouldn't worry about it, for the most part the new 360's last much longer than the less reliable launch units. You got a warranty for 3 years anyways..so I guess you can at least be partially concerned.

There's a good chance you'll get RROD no matter what you do. You can make it less likely by placing it on a hard surface instead of a carpet. If you have to put it on carpet, put a slab of wood or something underneath. If you do that, mine doesn't heat up any different than if it's horizontal or vertical. If you accidently knock it over while it's vertical though, you'll tear up whatever disc is inside the system.

The new systems cannot get RRoD. You will not get RRoD. Xbox 360's always run hot, they are very loud as well. It is probably normal. Besides, if it breaks, then you get 100% free repair, don't even have to pay for shipping :D.

Yes, they can, and they do. Reliability is improved, but not perfect.

Yah. But it already got really hot. I'm so paranoid about this though. Every couple of seconds i feel the back of it to see if its hot and it was really hot. I guess i'm paranoid because the previous one i had overheated a lot.

Yeah you can for sure. My sister got an elite for Christmas. It RRoD on Christmas... She was pretty sad to put it mildly.

That's strange. I just got a new Elite as well and it actually doesn't get that hot, just a little warm which is perfectly normal for electronics. Maybe it's not as hot as you think but if your really worried try taking it back and getting it exchanged.

You gotta chill out..they get hot man. Your 360 will be fine. Just be happy it's backed by a 3 year warranty unlike the PS3 which isn't and they've been getting allot of people with the YLOD(yellow light of death) and Sony refusing to repair it unless they pay up allot of $

I bought a new 360 Elite yesterday and I haven't felt the system getting hot. I have it on a shelf with plenty of ventilation and it's horizontal. The only thing I notice that gets warm is the power supply. I have that on the shelf too, also with ventilation.

Lay on it, kick it, use it as a coaster, let your younger brother lick it, treat it like the mona lisa. It doesn't matter, it's not going to last as long as you would like. That's the main beef with the 360. I'd say expect a maximum of 3 or 4 years out of it.

Listen, i dont want to know if YOURS doesnt or not. I want to know if mine is going to be fine. It gets real hot and i'm scared that i'll have to pay for another one. I live in Florida if that helps. It's usually hot up here. I have my xbox on a little wooden drawer and it has ventilation. Just tell me if its going to be alright.

If you are that worried, return it and say it isn't operating properly. They'll give you an all new machine. If this new machine generates the same amount of heat, that seems awkwardly hot to you, then I'm sure it's fine. The biggest complaint with the 360 is that it just wasn't made to last, so don't plan on pulling out any "classic" in 5-10 years time, ala N64 or ps2.

Is it plugged directly into the wall? does it have maximum ventilation around it? do you install your most played games to your hard drive? if the answers to those question are yes, youre good. now look on the back of the power brick. youll either see 203W, 175W or 150W, the less the wattage, the less likely your console is to ever break

It is plugged into an outlet, not a surge protector. It is a jasper model because i noticed the smaller power brick. Also, it is inan entertainment center, but the kind i have isnt blocking ventilation to my Xbox. The problem i have is paranoia because of how hot it got after 40 min. of play. Am i to worry?

If it is well ventilated, don't worry about it. Consumer electronics get hot. That's just how it goes. If the thing dies one day, there's nothing you can do about it. Just enjoy it while it works. That could be 2 years or 20.

the only thing i can think of why it is getting hot fast is that your AC Adapter is on a soft surface, it most be on a hard suface or it could overheat fast

My xbox does have ventilation good enough. But still gets hot.
