i thought it was my router overheating all day, but since all my friends got dc'd at once, so i figured it was something wrong wit xbl
maybe its for the update on the 19th

Most likely but I think Microsoft could at least tell us "hey connection issues will be messed up a little so you guys can have your update next week".

Wednesday is going to be a nightmare. The CoD4 map pack practically shut down Xbox Live and that was only a fraction of people downloading compared to how many will be downloading the update. Theres going to be all kinds of problems come Wednesday, connection issues, bricked consoles even.Ket87

Maybe the recent wave of people being invited into NXE on the beta programme isn't so much about letting them try it early, but to ease the load on the servers on the 19th when it launches worldwide - the people that use it all the time and were aware of signing up for the beta will already have it, while a lot of other people will just get it when they next turn on.
I'm going to avoid playing much online for the next week, as the service is likely to be interrupted by the huge amount of download traffic on the Live servers - however many million consoles downloading a 128mb patch - that's a lot of bandwidth
