Earlier today I was able to pick up a copy of Mass Effect. I went to a store that I usually do not go to-one that will remain nameless for now-and was surprised to see multiple copies of the game on the shelf. The employee happily told me-while in the process of selling me the game-that many people have been asking about the game, and she said she was not really sure why it was receiving so much attention. Oh well, this is the first time that I have been able to get a game well before it was scheduled to be released. I am going to play it for a few hours, and after, I will be back on to let you all know what I think of it.

All right, sorry it has taken me so long to say what I think of the game so far. I've been been watching a lot of football this weekend, and playing Mass Effect, of course.

The game starts up with you creating an I.D. for your character. You can choose to be a default character or create a custom male or female; I choose to create a custom male character, but the customisation seemed pretty limited. The class I decided was Infiltrator--do not really know why I picked it, just did.

The game starts you off on a mission that introduces you to the combat right away, which I am sure many people are wondering about. Personally, I feel as if the game's combat would have benefited from a more fps style a la Deus Ex, but that does not mean that it is bad. For being third person, it does work well. You are able to use different areas of the environment for cover like Gears of War, but it seems easier because you don't need to press a button to initiate this; it can be accomplished by just approaching the particular part you wish to take cover behind and as long as you press forward in the direction of it, your character will take cover behind it. It is just as simple to leave from the wall or object that is protecting you. And, as you can imagine, by pressing LT you can pop-out form cover to shoot. In combat, you will have control of a squad that consists of two other people along with your character. There are four basic commands that can be used to control your squad member, but I didn't find myself using them much. One nice feature is the ability you have of choosing how your squad members are upgraded and the ability of deciding what weapon they should wield for any particular moment. This is done by menus that are intuitive and easy to navigate. The weapons I could choose from involved different sniper rifles, assault rifles, pistols, and shotguns.

The visuals are fantastic. It is truly a beautiful game. Each species is well thought out, and I found checking out and talking to each of the species I encountered one of best aspects of the game so far. The only negative is some of the species lack variety within themselves, such as the volus and the hanar. The world you are in does feel as if it is quite large, especially when you reach the citadel. The game even emphasizes this as you can observe the vast area at a certain part of the citadel. The game does run smooth despite of this; although, it does pause the action to load at times, but the loading is brief and never happened at a time where I was under duress.

I have only played the game for approximately five hours, and I feel as if I have not accomplished much at all. That is not a negative, though. I'm sure anyone who has played a game like this knows that exploration is greatly encouraged. This game is no different. If you are like me, you want to try and visit every nook and cranny of the environment, which can be time consuming. There are many characters that you can interact with, with multiple choices of dialogue. These conversation can take up some time as well--especially if you wish to get as much information as you can. A lot of the story is revealed in more depth in these conversations. The story does appear to be very complex and, of course, veryinteresting fromwhat I have seen of it.

Lastly, I will talk of the sound. The voice acting for the most part very well done. I believe I heard Seth Green as a character at the beginning of the game. Many of you will recognise the Arbiter form Halo as Captain Anderson--Keith David is the actual name of the actor. He was in Requiem for a Dream if that helps anyone. Shepard's voice-work really is not anything special (his male voice, you could choose to be a women). The musical score is well above average. When at the Citadel, it reminded me of Howard Shore's work with the Lord of the Rings series. I'm not sure who did the score for this game, but it was well put together form what I have heard so far.

In closing the game has impressed me quite a bit so far. I am very interested in seeing how complex the game truly is. And, if anyone would like, I would be willing to post my thoughts after I have played more of this game. As of now, it definitely appears to be what everyone has been expecting--if not more.

I would definitely like some screenshots that show a weapon/armor statistics screen or something like that. I have been wondering how they are handling equipment and upgrades.

Was it 60 bucks well spent? Does it seem as if it can seriously make a run for game of the year? I just pre ordered the collectors edition and if the game isn't all that, I won't bother wasting 70 bucks.

Good for you, but I could honestly care less about Mass Effect. I'm sure it's a great game, but pouring through endless hours of dialog just doesn't interest me. I can appreciate what BioWare is bringing to the table though.

The Citadel is a massive space station that was built by a alien species known as the Protheans, it is home to the council which is basically the law in colonized space.

And how are you going to enjoy Mass Effect? With the power of your imagination?

You do know that if a 360 dies right out of the box, you can take it back to the original place of purchase and get it exchanged for a new one, right? If they gave you lip, you could've just threatened to get your state's attorney general involved. I don't know about other states, but that works really damn well here in WV.

As for K-Mart breaking the street date... Hell, they've been doing that for years. I got Final Fantasy X there about one week before its release, and many DVDs days in advance. I haven't checked the K-Marts around here for Mass Effect yet; but, after reading this, I damn sure will.

That makes no sense to me.. seeing how you have over 26K GS and were last seen playing 1 day ago. lol

Anyways, Mass Effect looks pretty decent, I'll be getting it for x-mas seeing how I can wait to get it, unlike most people who seem to be willing to burn down an orphanage to get it.

I don't know that I'd be willing to burn down an orphanage... Possibly a retirement home. They're all on the virge of death anyway... ... ... ... Just kidding, of course. Or am I?

Haha, shame on k-mart. If that store gets caught selling that game, they can be fined thousands of dollars. I work at a Target, and the fine for selling a DVD before its street date can be as high as $10,000. YAYY!!

Sorry for the typos in that mini-review, guys. I wrote it in a rush and did not proofread it before I submitted it.

I have played through the game some more, and I would like to say that the Citadel is not as large as I initially thought, nor as large as the game attempts to portray. It is a decent size, though--not small by any means. However, there is, indeed, a lot to do. I easily spent over four hours in the Citadel exploring and completing both main-story missions and side missions. Also, it is usually a good idea to revisit areas. I went back to Flux, a bar/club/casino, a little while after I had already completed a side mission that involved that area, and a cut-scene took place that lead to another side mission. There is a Citadel Rapid Transit service setup that does make the area seem smaller, since it will pretty much take you where you wish to go fairly quickly. But, I spent the majority of my time walking to get places when I first started playing. As of now, I am getting ready to leave the Citadel, which gives me the options of three different places to go. I will be sure to fill people in on size of the three locations that I will be traveling to shortly.

To answer the question about what the Citadel actually is, it essentially appears to be a hub that is home to many different representatives of the different species in Mass Effect. It is where the Council resides. The Council is pretty much the law and deciding force of the Mass Effect world. They choose who the spectres are, and they oversee what species should have sway in the Council's affairs. As for the relationship between the Council and the spectres, I think it could be compared to President Bush and the supreme court. The spectres are above the law and regulations, and ultimately, they only answer to the Council (sorry for the gratuitous shot at Bush). However, we all know the supreme court does not elect the president, whereas the Council does choose the spectres. Spectres are necessary to accomplish tasks that traditional law-enforcement would not have the jurisdiction for.

Hopefully this has better answered some of your questions and concerns. I would imagine there will be more combat in the places I am going to be visiting shortly. There was some at the Citadel but not too much, and I will let you know how it is with upgraded weapons and squad.

I do not know if I can say this will be a significant contender for game of the year. I will have to finish the game first in order to make that judgement. So far, it does seem to have the potential to be up there, but I will wait till I am further along to give my opinion on that. Also, I've never really been a fan of collecter's editions of games. I do not really think the extra content provided is really worth the extra cost. But, if you are a big fan of BioWare and their work, then that is up to you. Although, up to this point, the game does appear to be worth the $60.

I will post the pictures that were requested as soon as I can--hopefully later tonight.

I'm pretty jealous of all of you though, but Kane and Lynch and Assassin's Creed should keep me cooped up in my room and occupied for a few weeks easy.

Having played for the last hour or so only, I don't feel I can comment on the mechanics of the game or the story quite yet (though I am intrigued enough to follow all the dialog points so far, whatever that's worth to you). I do have some minor quibbles though.

The framerate seems very inconsistent.... I think. It definitely gets jumpy at points and I haven't been able to pinpoint whether this is the camera jolting about in certain situations or whether it is a framerate issue. Either way, it is mild, but disconcerting and definitely noticeable in parts.

The other thing is shadows. Shadows have such a hard pixelized edge to them and generally look pretty off.

Other than those graphical issues, as a game I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far. Just thought I'd throw up some thoughts for you guys.
