Depends, at a LAN party we left 6 systems on for 3 days and they still work perfectly. However my system did end up dieing from just sitting around for 1 week then turned it on and red ring of death, this was about 6 months after this lan party. Its really random when these things die.

Each system has a remote detonator for the RRoD. Microsoft uses a random number generator to figure out which one they are going to set off that day. Pray your number never comes up.

depends how much room it has to ventilate properly. When mine overheats you can tell as games get buggy so I muct turn it off. which is annoying. But luckily my ps3 does not do that so I can play on that for longer periods of time.

if someone plays their 360 long enough to the point where it actually overheats and gets the red ring, they need to get a life.

Going on 2 years here, with 2 360s, and both are still alive and kicking after all that time, with nearly 24/7 use. My Wii however, just started dieing (GPU overheating), which on a lesser powered console is pretty sad... So much for it just being 360s that have poor reliability. And I know of PS3s that have been DOA and overheated, etc as well.

Welcome to the world of consumer electronics, ones which we wont be able to treat like we did back in the days of cassettes. As electronics become more complex, expect more problems, and to have to be more careful with the surroundings, the way you use it and maintain it, etc. Just like computers are consuming more and more power, eventually, we are going to have mini-nukes in our homes lol :)

Actually... each Xbox 360 has little tiny evil gremlins inside. They slowly eat away the insides of your 360 until one day.... BAM! Red Rings of Death!!!!!!

The only way to stop them is to beat Halo 3 on legendary, blindfolded, with your feet, in 12 seconds.
