So, I received my refurbished 20GB HDD yesterday from Microsoft, which I got as part of their memory upgrade program. However, when I connected it, I saw that it only had the capacity told hold 13.9 GB of information.

Is this...erm...normal? I'm guessing not. Is there anything I can do? Or am I screwed with 13 gigs instead of 20? :?

The 360 uses 4GB for the system IIRC...the regular capacity of a 20GB drive is ~18GB...

There's pre-loaded content that you can just delete like demos and videos if for some reason 14 GB is a problem.

Some of the demos and the videos (like start up ones) take up a ton of space. You don't need them ,and if u want to watch one, just do it on Youtube. I didn't want really any of the demos s i deleted most of them. And smetimes crap games that you hated but only rented like Viva Pinata Party Animals (thought it was the first one) are good 2 delete. They dont take up much room though.

This is common for all hard drives on all platforms. The 20gb rating is the "RAW" drive space before anything at all is added to it. Once the file system and operating system files have been added it is reduced. Even if you go to an OEM dealer and buy a hard drive for your PC it's not going to be the actual size it's rated at once you format it.

Like someone else said - just delete all the preinstalled stuff from M$ and that will bump you up to between 15 and 17gb of free space.

Delete the preloaded junk and you should have around 16-17GB.

My xbox part < system < memory < HD. Here you can choose game saves/videos/music/demos/etc. They usually preload videos/music/demos onto the HD.

Yup, PC's do it too, since the OS itself takes up some memory.

Wrong. If you delete EVERYTHING possible on the Xbox 360 20gb HDD, it comes out at 13.9Gb. It is not possible to get more than this amount. 120gb only has 114gb also...

The link in my last post says what they use it for. I also don't don't know how to get more then 13.9GB out of the HD. All I know is that I did before I upgraded to a 60GB.

I doesn't get any more definitive than this. No need to post any more responses because this is where the official answer is.

Yeah,the 120GBs miss about 10 at least.Mine did.No big deal though. All hard drives are like that.For instance,a 8GB iPod,will actually probably be 7.5GB.

This is common for all hard drives on all platforms. The 20gb rating is the "RAW" drive space before anything at all is added to it.
