My true home is the manor that I got for being the head of the Redoran House. Before that I kept all of my stuff in houses that I "liberated" in cities across the island. When I got the manor, I went back and got all of my cool/rare stuff.
Mine is in the guild leaders room in the Fighters Guild in Vivec after I became head of the guild. It's close to the Mages guild for easy teleportation, and  I usually use the Mark spell on it so I can use Recall to teleport back when I need to.
I never built a house through the Great Houses quests, because I was told that they are very far from everything and you have to walk to get there.
My main house is in Balmora, which had most of my stuff (weapons, armor, ect.). I also had one in Pelagiad that I visited just for fun (I like that town :) ).
OMG! TELL ME HOW TO GET A MANSION! I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT THAT!!!

Join one of the Great Houses, I believe there's three (Telvanni, Hlaalu, and Redoran). Do all the quests they ask you to do, and eventually they'll build you a house.
No, you are only allowed to join one Great House. Make sure to think about it carefully before you decide which one you want to join. If I remember correctly, Redoran is more for fighters, Telvanni for wizards, and Hlaalu for merchants/traders. Check GameFAQs if you want more info on the Great Houses.
mine is in Balmora where the Morag Tong assassins use to reside... after killing all of them, i thought it was a great place because all of the room it has.... chests, store rooms, bedrooms, tables, shelves a bar...
 In my EVIL file I actually killed off everyone in the entire redoran guild house. I then cleared my name, so I have every house in that giant crab like structure.
In my regular file I am the grandmaster of the Telvanni so I own Uviriths grave manor
If you beat the game though you can get into House Hlaalu for free even if your in a different house. Talk to the duke in ebonheart and he'll make you grandmaster of hlaalu. Im not sure if you can have the haluu mansion though.
Oh and the telvani mansion is the best although its in the middle of nowhere.
Lol, I'm so into that game..the deed for the Hulaal..I baught for 200,000. But anyway..here is my next question, how do I cure the blight in my egg mine, get alot of workers, and make my strong hold prosper.
i have like 5 places in balmora, and probalby 50 other places spread out on the rest of the map, but balmora is where i am the most. i also have places on solstheim and in mournhold. i have also turned my houses into my own musiums, with everything and i do mean everything in the game, including the 1000 pound hammer.
my main house is the nordic guys sword shop in balmora when i first decided to make it my house i didnt know the gaurds respawned and now every once in a while ill walk in and i have to kill the gaurd or else he thinks im stealing something and i have WAY too much stuff there to move

yea i tried to take the fort in tel vos but left because of all the gaurds reasponing so i now call ravenrock my home
