I think he wanted to direct, he even turned down directing the star wars movies several times, but they finally got him in the end. I don't know who else is going to manage to do the Star Trek series justice after this. He basicly revived it and made it cool.

He kinda has to give up Star Trek since he is doing Star Wars now. I couldn't imagine trying to do both franchises at the same time.
