Playstation 4 does not need an internet connection at all.

I interviewed senior VP of worldwide studios Michael Denny following the reveal of PS4. Here we discuss the philosophy behind the new console, the controller, the lack of backwards compatibility and Sonys future plans.

OPM You talked a lot about service, tech and ideas; how are you going to present PS4 to a more casual market?

Michael Denny So I think two of the other pillars we talked about in-terms of design were simplicity and immediacy. Even taking back a step from here, PlayStation 4 can still be enjoyed old school without an Internet connection at all. So it depends what level you want to use these feature sets at. So with simple and immediacy we want it so that everything is one button click away, for example. And immediacy takes down these barriers that can be frustrating to gamers between the player getting access to the content.

Well that is starting to clear things up about the Playstation 4. This doesn't mean that all games will not require an internet connection, but it's a good indication that Sony is sticking with more traditional ways of handling used games and whatnot.

I still expect online passes.

Also this article was posted on March 20th, well before any real info of the X1. This isn't Sony just responding.

This shows they have a completely different focus than Microsoft.

Can't wait... Gonna buy a PS4 for sure. I just need a little more info on how PSN is going to work for games and Netflix. No fee = instant buy.

Good to hear. I'll likelu buy the X1 as well, but the PS4 is looking to be my primary system.

Kind of expected because of where the PS4 is coming from. A more respectable bunch.

Would anyone else be in favor of dropping online passes? (At least for launch)

still too vague for my liking.  You could enjoy an XBO without an internet connection.  Just take a claw hammer to the thing.

I call bull on this. Theoretically, PS4 doesn't need an internet connection. Firmware updates are another matter entirely (having a blu-ray drive without the latest firmware renders it deadweight). While true, the statement is very deceptive if you want the ideal experience.hiphops_savior

Not entirely true if you think about it.

The publishers that choose to implement used game blocking on their PS4 titles will doubtless require an online connection to input the code that will come with new games or to pay used game fees.  It's likely some used games will have single player but no multiplayer until you pay a fee (like EA did with Battlefield 3).

Sadly after seeing MS's stance on used games I think most publishers will do just that.  It was a good PR move by Sony to leave it up to the publishers, but I can see it blowing up in their faces.

Used game blocking was being pressured by devs and pubs for years.  I figure it would make new game prices drop to $40ish (PC levels).  I was wrong :(
