In addition to the newly announced Batman: Arkham Origins (hitting Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U on October 21 this year), Warner Bros. has also announced Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, the first handheld Batman Arkham title, coming to both the Nintendo 3DS and the PS Vita on October 21. Some facts and details:

  • Arkham Origins Blackgate is completely separate and independent from Arkham Origins.
  • It is being developed by Armature Studio. Armature Studio is a studio founded by several ex Retro employees, the studio responsible for the seminal Metroid Prime Trilogy.
  • Arkham Origins Blackgate is a 2.5D, sidescrolling Metroidvania
  • There is a focus on exploration and combat
  • The story events take place after the events of Arkham Origins

Honestly, this game looks really good. I'm going to keep an eye out for it, and if it is received well, I will definitely pick it up.

Are you all interested in this game? What platform will you pick it up on?

More information from GamingEverything (thanks Slashkice!)

- Warner Bros. wanted to have a 2.5D-style Arkham game in the style of Metroidvania
- The company chose Armature because the studio was familiar with that style of game
- Takes place after the end of Origins
- Set on the isolated island at the Blackgate Penitentiary
- Prison uprising has occurred
- Intro level in Gotham
- Batman goes to Blackgate in order to put a stop to the riot
- 2D animatics with full voices tell the story
- Batman moves through a side-scrolling game world
- He'll pick up near gear and take on enemies along the way
- Interconnected passages and prison secrets
- Not focused on leveling up abilities like the console games
- Instead, it stays true to the subgenres formula
- All of Batmans improvements came through gear pick-ups and upgrades
- Team wanted to give players more of a sense of collection
- Mostly set along a 2D plane
- Takes full advantage of the visual three-dimensionality of the environments
- Explore, fight, and interact with the foreground abnd background
- Can grapple up to gargoyles on a background balcony while a crowd of armed inmates pass by
- Enemies will go after Batman from all angles
- Go to the foreground or background to tackle a designed foe
- Combat similar to the console Batman games
- Button taps to attack, counter, and use gear are in place
- Freeflow combat system
- Built from the ground up
- Batarang: stun enemies or hit distant objects
- Line launcher: cross wide gaps
- Explosive gel variation: shoot from a launcher onto spots around the screen
- This lets you get involved with entertaining takedowns such as dropping a chandelier on enemies from above
- More gadgets will also be in the game
- Has a version of the predator mode
- Game has a few more layers of feedback
- Ex: can see the sightlines of enemies
- This lets you know if enemies can see you or not
- Same kind of vantage points, floor grates, silent takedowns, glide kicks, weapon use, and breakable walls as in the console games
- Game is split into various sections
- Each can be accessed once you figure out a way inside
- No save rooms
- Modern checkpoint system
- Can manually save whenever you desire
- Can defeat the bosses in any ordder if you find out where you want to go
- We dont want you to break the game, but if you can exploit it in a certain way that we havent thought of, thats awesome. So its conceivable the players will have abilities that dont necessarily jibe that great with the boss. Weve taken some cues from other games where if you have a particular item against a boss, youll just rip them a new one, but we dont tell you what that item is
- Will have detective mode
- Tap a button and the screen fades into a digitized overlay with detailed info
- Green enemies: enemies havent seen you
- Red enemies: enemies are onto your location
- Move a reticle around the screen to focus Batmans attention
- Can use this to uncover secrets
- Uncover clues and analyze dangerous situations in detective mode

This game better have a good reason for 2.5D other than "handhelds" We're long past the days of the Gameboy where our handhelds can't do 3D environments.

Metroid Prime made it work. But that's beside the point. It's a fairly drastic genre shift.

Hopefully the Vita version actually has features of it's own. I fear it'll be ported from the 3DS with no graphical upgrades and such.

It'll probably get some nice touchpad exclusive features, and will generally look better, but I can't imagine what else they would give it.

Handheld gaming will soon be better than console gaming the way console gaming is going. At least it keeps it simple and to the point, unlike consoles which are increasingly becoming bloated with more and more exploitative crap. Also, port begging? Tsk tsk, I would have expected better from you, Adobe.

And my 27" LED may not be as grand as a 50" plasma, but it sure beats a teeny 3.5" screen (or whatever) any day of the week. Also Xbox controller for better sticks and buttons. :)

Two things I absolutely love is Arkham gameplay and Metroidvania games, yet this combination sounds so off. Both the systems can have capable 3D gameplay in competent hands, and with Retro's ex employees who knows what can be done. In a dream situation for me, I would love the Metroidvania game on the 3DS and the Vita version getting a 3D game. Not because of power differences, but because the Vita is strong and there's already been a decent handheld 3D Batman on iOS and because the Metroidvania games on the DS were some of the few games where the second screen was immensely useful.

2.5D Metroidvania style? I don't buy it, not many can do this well, and the 0.5D part leaves a bad taste in my mouth like Castlevania 3DS.

Ex-Metroid developers make Metroid-esque game. WB has been really protective (and responsible) with the way it has been handling its franchises recently and with that pedigree behind the game I don't think this will just be a throw-away handheld game.

Trying to imagine how nice those would be in 3D makes me sad. The Arkham game have some of the most fun 3D traversal in gameplay history, along with games like Super Mario Galaxy, and, well, not many other games I can remember. You know your game is good when just moving in it is so goddamn entertaining.

- Can use this to uncover secrets
- Uncover clues and analyze dangerous situations in detective mode

Okay, so this all sounds awesome. The foreground/background thing definitely makes it seem like the game was conceptualized/designed with the 3DS and its 3D function in mind, though.

I'm concerned how the console/PC game is going to turn out. No Rocksteady has me legitimately worried.

Will wait to see how this one pans out, without Rocksteady at the helm I'm cautious.

The developers handling the console version are the ones that handled the Wii U port of Arkham City, so they have some pretty legitimate experience with the series. All they need to do is take Rocksteady's already solid foundation and then just re-apply it to a new scenario.

the foreground and background thing reminds me of mark of the ninja. in fact a lot of the stealth and combat stuff do. that's good. very, very good. i like the collectibles > exp as well. - We dont want you to break the game, but if you can exploit it in a certain way that we havent thought of, thats awesome. So its conceivable the players will have abilities that dont necessarily jibe that great with the boss. Weve taken some cues from other games where if you have a particular item against a boss, youll just rip them a new one, but we dont tell you what that item is the hell is this, megaman? :P overall, this version has me more interested than any of the other arkham games (took me years to finally get around asylum, still haven't played city).

As long as the core gameplay remains untouched I'll be happy. The Arkham games have the best melee combat of any action-adventure game I've ever played, so as long as that's kept intact the game will be a winner.

it's sad because the vita could do so much more. scale down the UE3 engine for the vita and you can make a decent non-half baked batman arkham city/asylum type game. look at the dark night game avaiable for smart phones. my orginal sgs captivate phone can run the game smooth and flawlessley and the Vita is MUCH more capable graphically.

We'll see. Might end up being decent, but....ugh. This is a far cry from the handheld Batman game I dreamed of. So sad. I mean a 3DS batman game was always doomed to this, but Vita? Why couldn't the Vita game at least just be a downgraded console port? I'd rather have a downgraded console port than a barely upgraged 3DS port. Or a smaller scale original 3D batman game like Ubisoft did with Assassins Creed(except make the game not suck)? Well hopefully this will be better than expected. Super hyped for the console game though.
