Nintendo needed a gimmick to get out of 3rd place?

yes they did.

No, they didn't "need" one... but they used one to get out of third. I personally would have prefered they stayed there. They still were making a handsome profit and some stupendous games.

First, i remember the n64 being in first. Next, ya it did need the gimick, every system needs some kind of gimmick, just like xbox had halo and playstation had blueray.

Halo is a game and bluray is a media format. They're not gimmicks.

The people that said Nintendo needed new Franchises they make new franchises every gen on the GCN they made 8 new Franchises on the GBA they also made alot of new Franchises.

They average about 7 new Franchises a gen for consoles and about 10 a gen for Handhelds.

Also I didn't care if they were in first place or not I liked their games but I'm happy they changed it up because they are still making great games now they are just doing what they've been doing they just changed places.

no they needed sony to put out a 600$ consolesurrealnumber5

That was a part of it, but the public was so excited over the wii it really would have been successful even with a competently priced sony console.

No they targetted a new audience and also Sony had a huge price tag on the PS3. Also why are Sony and Microsoft copying Nintendo now with motion controls. I don't call it a gimmick if the other 2 are deciding to do it too now.
