Save games are usually stored in My Documents/Game name. Just move the files out of there to somewhere else to be safe. Uninstalling a game usually leaves them behind. You can also check the install folder for save files if you don't see anything in mydocs.

You could try to locate the savegames, move them to another folder, reinstall the game and then move them back into the folder you first found them in.
Not sure if that will work though, occassionally if you uninstall the game it asks if you want to keep the savegames before uninstalling it.

thanks for replies

its installed on my second hdd, so i go into D, then program files, grand theft auto san andreas, but theres no mention of save games there:(

i found two files, but they are savehouses i think, and are located in the map folder. i have at least 5 save games, so these could not be them.

Yep, always save the entire folder, than you just paste it on "My Documents", that's why I do everytime I replay SA.
