What's the difference between a hamburger and a sandwich?

Well at least that's the conclustion I came up with. 

Sandwich has white or wheat bread, a hamburger has a bun. A sandwich also usually has cold cuts for meat, while a hamburger always has hamburger (thus the name)

I've been to restaurants that claim to serve hamburgers, but when I get my food it turns out to be a sandwich. What's up with that?

That has happened to me, too! :x I ordered a veggie burger (or mystery meat burger as Aidan calls it), and it turned out to be a sandwich! With very good mystery meat, I should add, but it was still a sandwich! False advertising??? :lol:
