Here I come with a somewhat predictable recommendation... :D
I have fallen in love with a musician named Elliott Smith. He was a singer-songwriter whose music could be described as lo-fi, indie, folk rock, etc. His 'claim to fame' was an Oscar nomination for his original song in the movie Good Will Hunting.
He released five albums while he was alive (two more have been released posthumously). His music started off as very minimal, and it built with every album. Basically the first couple of albums are just him with his guitar, but then he started to add more instruments (piano, drums, bass, etc. - most of which he played himself), and then he added more production and sometimes orchestral parts.
I thought I'd point that out, as some people aren't into the minimal/lo-fi sort of thing, but would possibly like his later stuff, which had more production.
And now I will provide links to a few of my favorite songs of his (at least one from each album!)...
"Condor Ave" - This is off his first album (Roman Candle). He wrote this song when he was in high school, but it's fantastic...great lyrics. It's an early one, so the only instrument is the acoustic guitar.
"Southern Belle" - This is off his second album (Elliott Smith/self-titled). Again, the only instrument used is the acoustic guitar. The guitar in this song is really great though.
"Pictures of Me" - This is off his third album (Either/Or). It's fairly upbeat and catchy, and he used a few more instruments in this one. It has an interesting sound and good lyrics.
"Waltz #2 (XO)" - This is off his fourth album (XO). It's one of his most popular songs. It's mostly comprised of the guitar, piano, and drums. It's very nice.
"Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands" - This is also off his fourth album (XO). It's a personal favorite of mine. There's an amazing build-up at the end.
"Son of Sam" - This is off his fifth album (Figure 8.), which is the album with the most production. It's very catchy and it has a great piano part. People often really like this one.Â
"Junk Bond Trader" - This also is off his fifth album (Figure 8.). It's another personal favorite.
"King's Crossing" - This is off his sixth album (From a Basement on the Hill). It's arguably one of his best songs. It has a slow, strange intro, but it's really an amazing song.
"Almost Over" - This is off his seventh album (New Moon), which is just a compilation album of songs that hadn't previously been released.Â
"How to Take a Fall" - This isn't on an album. It's a really great song, and it's a little harder than he usually played. I love it very much.
"Miss Misery" - This is his Oscar-nominated song. He lost to Celine Dion for her song for Titanic.
I tried to come up with a good variety of songs of his. If you don't like the first few links, you might like the last ones. His sty.le sort of changed. If you want more, feel free to ask. Also, if you liked him at all, you should check out his band Heatmiser. He was in that band before he did his solo music. Heatmiser was sort of a hard rock/post-grunge sort of band. If you want song recommendations for them, feel free to ask.
As you can see, I am very dedicated to spreading the word of Elliott Smith! ;)
