I'm going to use a somewhat specific metric to gauge this for myself. I'm just going to list games that are over 10 years old yet remain just as enjoyable by today's standards. I feel that that is a true test of quality.
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Super Metroid
  • Castlevania:Symphony of the Night
  • Metroid Prime
  • Pikmin
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee

Well I've been gaming a long time and I think most if not all my favourite games have been on PC.

Midwinter (amazing game, totally desolate, race against time that never made you feel in a hurry just choose the right characters and a great story).

Planescape Torment, quite simply the best dialogue, story and characters in any game ever, nothing since has even come close.

Morrowind, Bethesda's finest hour despite all the rough edges. Fantastic story, great game and stunning lore, all three elements watered down massively to the point of idiocy for casuals with Oblivion and Skyrim.

Disgaea 4 (PS3) more of a toy than a game imo. Spend forever deciding how you want to develop these characters and evolve their skills to ridiculous levels. **** the story, that was never the point.

Baldur's Gate 2, great story, great characters, great humour, really annoying combat but hey it is what it is. I still loved it.

Doom 2, simply incredible for its time and a MP experience that nobody would ever forget. This game said 'yo fuckers, I'm gonna frag your ass' it was the beginning of the end for all lunchtimes in networked offices.

Best series: Halo. Incredibly superficial but somehow fascinating. The lore I've read outside of the games I've loved but Halo 5 is a kick in the face for anyone who loves the SP side of it. Whatever... etc.

Consider I think only 2 of Platinum's games are actually great, I'm not anywhere near the Platinum fanboy some of you make me out to be. I just recognize that company for what they are, fun. Champ standards are obnoxious as **** doesn't help matters either, but yeah Bayonetta would be in my top 10 all time if I ever bother to make a top 10. I'm set with my top 3. That next 7 is impossible for me to feel happy about, it's too much of a lockjam of quality stuff

Bayonetta, Demon's Souls, Braid, Silent Hill 2, Thief 2, System Shock 2, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Planescape Torment, Fallout 2, Doom 2, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Devil May Cry 3, Maximo, Megaman X, Unreal 2k4, Shadow of the Colossus, Counterstrike, Street Fighter, Link to the Past, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4, and quite a few more. Don't really have a way to quantify me liking one more than the other, some of those I haven't replayed in a long ass time so I'd like to know how that game stacks up now and if it's as good as I remember. A lot of games don't end up being as good as I remember, others come out smelling better.

Beauty of those other 3 is I've had the chance to go back, and I still they are terrific, and my heart instantly went to Metroid, Resident Evil, and Ninja Gaiden when it came to discussing what were my favorites. And I'm of he opinion you don't second guess the heart, it knows what it wants. I will say that initially when I restarted NGB after playing Bayonetta, I did think Ryu Hayabusa moved like an old man in comparison, but the rest of that game is fucking ace. And Blab is a grade A, sewer scrum scrub for getting his ass whipped at the bridge by that horse riding armored demon guy. What a pusswagon.

@jg4xchamp: Totally fair. I hate lists for that exact reason, and why they tend to change each time you were to ask me. Picking between LttP and Super Metroid is an impossible task on it's own as an example, let alone quantifying that with 8 other games.

I was totally trolling, we just had this thread a couple weeks ago :P

Skyward sword does have some good parts, like the ancient cistern, sand ship, time shifting and in general I like how the sword and bow function, but the majority of the game is a slog. It's the most hand holdy, padded Zelda ever, and the item pickup's repeat animations were incredibly annoying.

Too bad it plays like shit and is the biggest slog the franchise ever came up with.

It's like they put Zelda and Wii sports resort in a can and shook it. Which, I did like archery and swordplay in that game at least, so they work well enough in SS. But yeah everything else, besides the whip I guess, was bad.

The Swordplay isn't even that good, it's the same butthole ass Zelda combat, where all the enemies do is make you stand there and wait to attack since none of them are hard, except now you gotta use a control scheme that isn't as consistent as hitting a button. **** the asshole that came up with the swimming controls, same person that came up with armor lock in Halo reach and directed the sex scene of Heavy Rain. Scum of the earth.

  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Pokemon Gold/Silver
  • The Witcher III: Wild Hunt
  • Final Fantasy IV
  • God of War II
  • Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings

This is as far as I can get before I hit a wall. After this I have a sort of... cloud of top games of all time, instead of a specific list

I found it to be the most enjoyable in the franchise. I've replayed it far more than any other Zelda thanks to it being a pure joy to play through from start to finish. I just adored it completely.

The motion controls are incredible and the game design is exceptionally brilliant throughout.

But seriously bro... that's like a crime against humanity.

It'd be like quitting Link to the Past because you got stumped in the Desert Palace. Quitting MGS3 because you couldn't get past The Pain. Imagine never finishing FFIV because you couldn't get past the Mist Dragon?

Missing out on the brilliance that is Ninja Gaiden Black because you got caught up on the 2nd boss would be a tragedy bro. I know NGB likes to take new player asses and serve them up well done, but when that game finally clicks it's nothing but finger orgasms from there on out. You go into this zen state in which the game throws impossible odds at you, but it doesn't matter because you're a fucking killing machine. No other single player game delivers that "in the zone" feeling the way NGB does for me.

To give up in the training wheels stages would be a shame.

/religious beliefs.

@Ballroompirate:

Too lazy to come up with a top 10 right now (tried to Google the last one I posted), but yeah.. MGSV is getting a spot on mine as well.

It's the most flawed ass game in my top 10, but I just can't deny the excellent shit that it does on so many levels. It's the MGS I always wanted. With the older MGS games I used to keep dozens of save files to replay different areas any time, but it was always a bummer that I couldn't have late game items/weapons in the early areas. Besides that, everything was just static. Even my favorite areas would wear thin quickly.

Now I can freely infiltrate any base, any time, with any gear I want, from any angle I want, with all kinds of curve ball factors at play. On top of the fact that the game plays way the **** better than the previous titles.

For all of its faults, it's still somewhat of a dream game. Could've been so much better, but still god damn great for what it is.

  2. Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Genesis)
  3. Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight (PC)
  4. X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter (PC)
  5. Pokemon R/B/Y (GB)
  6. Halo CE (Xbox)
  7. Mega Man X (SNES)
  8. NiGHTS into Dreams (Saturn)
  9. Gunstar Heroes (Genesis)
  10. Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
  11. Rodea the Sky Soldier (Wii)

Please tell me he didn't call it quits there...

lmao

Yeah man, it's like... like stopping Bloodborne because you died too many times in Central Yarnham or something. It's dumb is what I am saying.

Ninja Gaiden Black earns its keep, its a game that is difficult but never unfair, and there's a thrill to mastering it. To see someone give up on it so early and miss out on its brilliance, because a boss whooped their ass a couple times is legitimately sad.

Side note, I had forgotten entirely about the Mist Dragon in Final Fantasy IV. Damn, now I want to replay it again...

Aye, for me it's MGS3 on crack, I for one liked the twist in the story. I can see why it pissed people off but it makes since from what happens in a earlier Metal Gear game.

Yeah man, I've been wanting to replay it for some time now. The nostalgia factor is immense with that game. I'm just so stacked with games at the moment though. Probably wasn't a good idea to start up Fallout 1 in the middle of everything else lol.

Yeah, MGS3 on crack is about right.. maybe a bit too much Peace Walker in there, the resources/development stuff gets in the way at times. Then again, it also gives you more reason to dig into your infiltration sometimes as well. Like you have this clear cut path to your objective, but then you see a bunch of cargo containers, or a high rank soldier. Then things get complicated. Do you stay the course, or do you go out of your way to bring home the bacon? I dig that aspect of it, guess it's just a double edged sword.

But yeah, agreed on the twist man. I'm not big on the story in general, and if I ever hear the phrase "vocal chord parasites" again, I'll strangle somebody. But the twist was cool and I do appreciate how the game not only made some sense of the original MG titles, but even smoothed over a lot of things regarding what we learned of The Patriots in MGS4. It actually made Zero a very likeable guy.

@mark1974: I mispelled it somehow, it's Cobra, not Contra :D

Thanks for pointing that out!

Cobra made me spend countless hours on my good old C64

Didn't we have a very similar thread just a few days back?

Anyway, here's my top 5 (only including one game per series):

1. Mass Effect 2

2. The Witcher 3

3. God of War 3

4. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

5. Fire Emblem: Awakening

The rest of my top 5 (in no order) are Halo: Reach, Rise of Nations, Pokemon Black/White, A Link Between Worlds and Final Fantasy IV

I'd have included the likes of Mass Effect 3, Assassin's Creed 2 and God of War 2 as well if I wasn't mentioning just one game per series.
