The recent Xbox 360 dashboard update for Fall 2012 quietly increased the flash drive storage capacity from the 16GB implemented in 2010 to 32GB. Although we had been made aware of this the week of the update, we just wanted to make sure this wasn't a glitch that would be reversed at a later date.

Asked if the Xbox flash drive storage limit had officially increased from 16GB to 32GB during the most recent Xbox Live update, a Microsoft spokesperson told us, "Yes. The more our customers use their profile and download digital content, the larger the file size necessary to store that content and move it between consoles gets. Therefore we increased the size of the memory to enable our customers to take more of their Xbox profile with them on the go."

So how in the world is this a bad thing? That's excellent and more consumer friendly than I would have expected Microsoft to be.

Wish they would just lift the limit... but at least now I can install Rage, so I guess that's a good thing.

its hasn't been 16g, it was added in 2010, they didn't let you take anything on the go unless it was manufactured to some standard, unfortuntly everyone can just edit the saves now so their ability to protect game data and keep live's integrity has failed.

Actually, no, before the last major Dashboard upgrade (late last year?) you couldn't use your own storage devices at all, and required the proprietary MS devices.

ITT: Pinnaclegaming has no idea what he's on about.

The addition of USB storage was made in the previous dashboard update.

2010 update. 16GB was nerfed, but still, it was better than nothing. I think the reason they allowed it at all is because the new Xbox 360 models lack memory card slots.

2 things that got me concerned...

Why the hell didn't Microsoft design the console correctly in the first place, so they wouldn't have to deal with USB flash drives?

Why the hell is there a limit of capacity in USB flash drives? How about unlimited?

Stupid, stupid Microsoft.

How many USB sticks should one be using before one could figure a hard drive would be a good investment? Anyways, good for the lemmings. More storage space is always good.

why don't you try taking a ps3 hdd with you to a friends house and see what happens when you try to use it in his/her ps3..... More storage is nice. But I won't be using anymore than the 8 gig stick I'm currently using.

That actually doesn't sound too bad.

32gb sounds like it could hold a pretty sizeable collection of XBLA titles. If the speed through USB is much faster than the HDD then that sounds like a good alternative.

who cares what the reasons are. you have so many options to consider with memory on the 360. most people are not even going to save up to 32 gb's in the whole console lifespan. im still rocking the 20 gig. all everyone wants to do is rip on the 360 no matter what improvements microsoft makes, just because its the leading console and your console of choice is behind it.

Such is the nature of subsidized hardware. Go into it knowing that you're getting hardware below cost now, but eventually, they're going to get their money back.

You can buy 3rd party 320GB Harddrives for around $50 on amazon, which is pretty competitive with standalone laptop drives. Even then consumers can buy their own enclosure and use whatever 5600RPM drive they want.

have you copied over information from the external drive then deleted the 360 install? once the drive it setup for xbox 360 use it cannot be changed one can only change the drive size use when first creating the drive. So you will need to copy over whatever is on that drive then delete the 360 install on it then redo the install it should use the maximum amount of information then 32gb.

yeah you've been able to do that forever even back when they used the one memory units. you've also been able to just download and password protect your profile for a while now which is what I do I have it on all my friends 360's and its password protected so they cannot log onto it without my permission.
