Its a problem, but its not as severe as most people think it is.
Yeah you have to wait a few weeks to get it back, but hey, its better than having to buy a new console.
I think the warranty ends this november though, and then you would have to buy a new Xbox360 or pay for it to be repaired. However, don't take my word on that statement, I don't exactly know the whole story behind it.
it hasen't been a big problem for me, just remember that power outages and trying to turn on your 360 with the cable to the power brick not all the way in will give the same error...so don't freak. fiddle first.
that being said you should go with elite or wait till the jasper chipset...or both.
cousins xbox yesterday fried out on him, busted up graphics card and rrod. He bought his a couple months ago. My friend just got his 3rd xbox back and this year (im guessing a more recent xbox) crapped out on him too. And another friends xbox rrod'ed once.

good question, i would say no...microsoft shells the thing and puts in a new GPU, everything else is the same i think. someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong (i expect nothing less from system wars)
You may get lucky like me. 2 and 1/2 years with no problems. But I'd wait til the Jasper chips atleast. I'm actually hoping to get RROD so i can get it replaced with a Jasper chipped console. But They way my 360 is running, doesn't seem like it's gonna happen. I've left it on for hours. My brother turns it on by accident and leaves it on while I'm at work... come home and still nothing.
Wait a month unitl the 60gb and the new arcade price point those SKUs should be the jasper chip-set which has the smaller cpu and gpu and is made by a completely different manufacture

Over 80% of them last pretty long.
The problem is a design flaw, but with careful maintence you should be fine. The best bet is to wait until all the old inventory is OUT, and buy the new systems coming this month. Just because you buy one in October doesn't mean it's NEW, I would wait until Dec-Jan to be safe.
I have had RROD Twice, but my Halo Model and Elite are so far, so good.

RROD is not the only problem you need to worry about when purchasing a 360. The Disc Read Error and DVD scratching and Disk Tray problems also needs to be worried about. Good luck on your purchase.
