Lately there's been a trend towards more straight-up multiplayer focused games coming to consoles. True, consoles have a big multiplayer focus already, but most of those games have a single player component.

With games like Titanfall and Evolve petering out rather quickly (though 2K's DLC practices could be largely to blame for Evolve's problems), is it safe to say that maybe console gamers aren't ready for entirely online-focused games?

I say this with a few games in mind: Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2, and a wealth of MMOs. Sure, you have MMOs on consoles, but there seems to be a great disparity in the number of players between platforms. I hear a lot of people complain about an online only game lacking a single player campaign, yet also complaining when a single player game lacks multiplayer. I feel like the only platform where online-only games truly thrive is the PC.

So what do you guys think? Is this the case? Are online-only games bad on consoles because the console crowd moves more quickly from game to game? Or are these types of games better suited to PC due to controls, community, or having a longer history with games like these?

Believe or not, they do work on consoles, it's just in these forums you get negative feedback.

So do you think that's a result of the game's design or a lack of content?

I think new MP only releases work relatively better on consoles than PC, for now.

On PC there are way too many high quality MP games with massive playerbases at very low or no cost. As such, any new MP only release (especially ones with little content like Evolve) is doomed on day one if they try to ask for a full game price. The exceptions are indie titles that sell for only $20 or less on day 1, which at least stand a fighting chance to attract some playerbase if the games themselves are very good (e.g. upcoming Killing Floor 2).

On consoles there aren't nearly as many well-established free/low cost MP games. However, that is gradually changing this genre with titles like PlanetSide 2 coming into the fray on PS4.
