Why does the ps3 games look like crap oon 1080i?

I went to wallmart and was playing ps3 on 1080i then i saw the games all the demo's except motorstorm and f1 racing looked liked cartoons! then i went to my cuzins house to play ps3 on their 480i tv lol and played resistance and motor storm and it didnt even look a bit cartoonish, now im going to my cousins to test out thier Sony 51 inch full 1080p tv with HDMI and im going to see a difference. thanks :D

Um....Motorstorm, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance, Fight Night, and GTHD look absolutely fantastic in 1080i (despite the whole framerate thing).

But generally better in 720p. Rainbow Six supposedly has issues, though.

I don't know what you're talking about. RB6 had issues with the resolution, but other than that I don't know what the problem would be, unless you were playing an unpatched launch Ps3 on a HDTV that didn't accept 720p. In that case it would downscale to 480i and then stretch to 1080i, which would indeed look like crap.
