Would've been near PS2 numbers by now if they kept going and lowered the price. Why aren't they on shelves anymore?

Why not? PS4 is an old system and PS5 plays its games.

When did they stop? I didn't even knew of this.

The specs inside that thing were laughable, so i really don't see it being expensive to produce, which tells me that they could've dropped the price by a lot.

Diverting resources to the PS5 due to chip shortages perhaps? Was planning on getting a PS4 for cheap by now but apparently that’s not looking very likely.

It looks like the PS4 is still in production. Looking around it appears that the PS4 pro and base models are gone in japan but otherwise there should be some sort of supply. Though looking at gamestop where i live...nada. zilch. not even used PS4s. odd.

The pro and slim were made on a 16nm process as far a i remember. I would think there would be some sort of capacity there still but maybe thats very limited too at the moment.

maybe sony thought they would just flood the market with PS5s instead and planned to kill the PS4 off quickly...but then covid and general chaos.

these things are not a simple case of contacting TSMC and asking for 500,000 or a million chips for the next month. now more than ever there is a very very long lead time. the last thing sony wants is to fire up PS4 production again just to be left with a load of PS4s on shelves in 2023-2024.

But only scalpers can get a ps5 it seems... Ps4 is great for anyone who wants to get more bang for your buck.

Same reason why Nvidia stopped producing RTX2000, to free up production for the next model.

Why would Sony stop producing PS4? Its literally impossible to get a PS5 so PS4 is basically still their current system. I dont think PS4 production will stop until PS5 is widely available in most all stores. However, I could see PS4 going away in Japan, but even so, Sony always states that they plan a 10 year life cycle for it's consoles. So they definitely won't be thinking of discontinuing PS4 until a couple of years from now.

Bad example. Nvidia is reproducing RTX 2060 and upgrading it to 16GB if the source turns out to be true.

@davillain-: I never said they should, I said why are they not on shelves anymore. They're not being mass produced at this point or casually being sold in stores.

Edit :revised my op, I can see why it caused confusion.

Afaik, they've been converting their PS4 assembly lines into PS5 assembly lines.

---

As to why they haven't lowered the price, it's probably a combinations of things.

- There's absolutely no need to sell it at a loss when the market is already at 110M+

- The return on investment is probably not worth it. They want people to buy the PS5 going forward.

- The second-hand market for PS4s is going to be quite big in the next year or two. Why compete with it?

PS4 is hard to find, I got lucky finding a new one last year for my lil cousin. I legit looked for 2 months before finding a Walmart that had 1..

My guess is they are conserving resources to be put into PS5s. Shortages.

@TheEroica: you know what's funny. I made a thread a few months ago about whether I should buy a ps5 when my bro took it with him, or if I should just rebuy a ps4 because of how expensive a ps5 was and the crazy amounts of scalping going on. Everyone said get a ps5. I ignored every single one, and bought a ps4 used for $140. Theres a bunch of good ps4 games to play now late in its life, and even if I sell the ps4 an year from now, I'll still be able to get back $100. On top of that, the ps5 will be more available by then, maybe even include 2 games by next black friday, possibly on a discount. It made too much sense to me considering ps5 has no games even worth playing anyway.

Is there a reliable source that states that Sony has officially discontinued the PS4? If there is no source, why believe it?

Why waste their limited supply of semiconductors on an old system when they're struggling to get their new system in consumers' hands?

It's hard to find any system that isn't a Switch. I hardly see new X1's or ps4s. The second hand market is insane too, I sold my ps4 pro for $350 during the height of the pandemic and bought a PS5 right after.

@TheEroica: I’ve been able to acquire 6 PS5s over the past year, two of which were this month from Walmart so while scalpers are getting them there is opportunities for regular gamers to get one. PS5 plays PS4 games too and in higher quality so it’s definitely worth the upgrade.

?? - It's out of stock on Sony's site, but I haven't heard anything about it being discontinued.
