These lists of 130 games each will give you a pretty good idea of the styles and difference of these two sub genres. Feel free to mention your own favorite games when you reply!

I just like RPGs. I've had more exposure to JRPGs so I happen to like more of them.

I enjoy both genres, though I enjoy jrpgs a bit more. They take me back to my childhood.

All time? Definitely JRPGs. Plenty of classic JRPGs are among the greatest games of all time.

But today? I'd say WRPGs. JRPGs have gone downhill since their heyday, while WRPGs have gone mostly uphill.

In other words:

Classic JRPGs > WRPGs > Modern JRPGs

From both sides.

I have played 80% of the JRPG list and only 30% from the WRPG.

WRPGs just stay in the EU knight times or barbarian times , so much bland that current FPSs are varied.

If you're talking all time like that, it's a complete no contest with WRPGs shitting all over JRPGs.

In recent times though (since early 2000s say) AAA WRPGs have really been dogshit for the most part, with all the dumbed down stuff from Bio, Beth, ect, trying to appeal to non RPG fans with awesome action gameplay, blah blah blah...

The good WRPGs now aren't the mainstream/AAA stuff, for the most part, it's games like these...

http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/the-list-of-incline-2015-edition-added-d-os-2-to-poll.91705/

And yea, Jag85 def gets a... what the **** am I reading pic for that post.

All time? JRPGs take a royal dump over WRPGs.

But I like RPGs period, I don't care what kind, or where they come from.

Well to be fair there also also Wrpgs that are among the greatest of all time. Of course, a lot of reviewere sites back int he day were console centric so I can see what you're going for.

Western RPGs gave us Fallout 1 and 2, Planescape, Icewind Dale, System Shock 2, Deus Ex, and even something recent that is stellar like New Vegas.

I like games like Chrono Trigger, Parasite Eve, and the recent Souls games, but overall nah the WRPGs. For starters there was always something more to them on the gameplay front, and they were better examples of gamings potential story telling medium than the shitty ass anime crap plots you got from jrpgs.

Hilariously the Souls games might be my favorite rpgs period, and Mother 3 is probably my favorite video game story, but on balance the best WRPGs just had more to offer than the best jrpgs that weren't Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Not the least of which is that turn based crpgs had deeper gameplay.

Except for rather major games like fallout and ME releasing in the nearish future rather torpedoes that.

In terms of WRPG's vs JRPG's its a debate thats been done to death. I you like a linear story with ridiculous characters and twists you'll plump for JRPG's and if you prefer more realism, forging your own story (to a degree), dynamic character interaction and a more open world with a less focused story you'll prefer WRPG's.

I like actually roleplaying in my roleplaying games so I'm going for WRPG's by a landslide, knockout and a hadouken.

2 games out 130 , hadouken blocked.

Either way , both are RPG , so i just don care for castles and stonehenges.

I pick JRPG for not being clasic , you have your taste , i have mine.

Anarchronox, Deus Ex, System Shock 1 and 2, Vampires: The Masquare, KotoR, Shadowrun, to things like Jagged Alliance. This weird dismissal of WRPGs settings when a shit load of jrpgs are just what this super animed up medievil shit where the most creative thing they do is come up with ridiculous names for every little thing?

Fantasy RPGs in both genres are relying heavily on tropes, but you're being out right ignorant.

I like both equally.

Well, obviously, this is just my opinion, but WRPGs haven't come close to providing the kind of enjoyment I have had from JRPGs. I only began to truly enjoy cRPGs and WRPGs around 2000 and onwards- with Morrowind, Knights of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights, and so on.

JRPGs I have enjoyed right from the get go- from the original Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Zelda II, through to Pokemon, Breath of Fire, Golden Sun, the golden age of the 1990s, and even into the 2000s, with games like Persona keeping the love alive.

While I adore games like Skyrim, Witcher 3, Mass Effect 2, and Dragon Age Origins, I would pick Final Fantasy IV, Persona 4, or Pokemon Gold/Silver over them any given day.

JRPGs easily, WRPGs bore the hell out of me.

I'll take Xenoblade alone over any WRPG.

Actually, most of those GOAT lists & polls are from the 21st century, yet classic JRPGs are still far more dominant on modern GOAT lists & polls than WRPGs. If anything, Chrono Trigger has been appearing more frequently on recent lists, and is now second only to Ocarina of Time in terms of the number of GOAT list appearances.

Ok I understand. I began with the Utima series and you really see the influence it had on Jprg's.

But I also believe Jrpg's of the 90's were the summum of the rpg genre.

@Suppaman100: Oh, i definitely know! I have read some of the old interviews and articles, and Dragon Quest was very clearly a streamlined Ultima. I just never played Ultima until it was too late, so I never could get much into it. My first cRPG may have been Daggerfall, and as a six year old, that just overwhelmed me lol.

One thing I reallly appreciate about JRPG's compared to traditional wrpg's is that I feel they do a better job delivering the story, it might not be as well written but I get a better sense in most cases of going on a journey or following the relationships between these characters.

WRPG's traditonally have a shitload of text, that was the main method of delivering their story, and let's be honest some of this shit suffers from over-exposition. I feel JRPG's in a lot ways are just friendlier to pick up and play. Also stat acquisition to someone unfamiliar with these games can often be a pain, it pays to do some research before making characters unless you want to end up gimped.

In the end they're both vastly different genre's that excel at different aspects.

Yes but again, a lot of GOAT lists are from console centric sources (hi Gamespot) some whmo continue with their lists overtime with not much change. Often with reviewers who grew up on consoles, especially NES, so I'm not saying Jrpgs aren't on the lists, just that how many times, over the years, have you seen GOAT lists with Wrpgs in it before the 2000's? That's why it's not that surprising to me.

Fallout / Phantasy Star / Final Fantasy / Souls are the best RPGs. So why not both?

Persona gets a lot of fanfare in here, may have to check that out next.

Hm? I was referring to Chrono Trigger not being the only JRPG that has started occurring on all time great lists in recent years :/

Bit of an overactive guilty conscience?

This cop-out doesn't fit the context of his post. it would mean your post would be redundant. But alas I should have expected that. If this is how the forum is allowed to run I'll just leave then.

Also damn, here's one area where jrpg's just beat the shit out of wrpg's.

The soundtracks, without question.

The issue with WRPGs is that they usually opt for an unfocused, uncoherent, open world design that leads them to lack any focus. Very few games manage to overcome this hurdle (such as Witcher 3), and that leads Japanese games to be able to usually deliver a better experience.

From both sides.

I have played 80% of the JRPG list and only 30% from the WRPG.

WRPGs just stay in the EU knight times or barbarian times , so much bland that current FPSs are varied.

Eh? I'm talking about future releases. If you wish to talk about the past Buck Rodgers, Fallout 1-3 + NV, South park stick of truth, KOTOR 1+2 plus the MMO, STrek MMO, Vampire Bloodlines and Masquerade, Mass Effect 1-3, Jade Empire, Wasteland 1-2, almost 20 just off top of head hadouken not just confirmed but fataility.

As i said before , i have only played 30% of the WRPGs , and i just prefer JRPGs.

And i don't know about future releases.

Friendship?

All time? Definitely JRPGs. Plenty of classic JRPGs are among the greatest games of all time.

But today? I'd say WRPGs. JRPGs have gone downhill since their heyday, while WRPGs have gone mostly uphill.

In other words:

Classic JRPGs > WRPGs > Modern JRPGs

Classic WRPGs > Classic JRPGs > WRPGs > Modern JRPGs.

@Darkhorse-Gamer: There has been absolutely stellar WRPGs, noone's denying that :) Some of us just loved games like Xenogears and Chrono Cross more.

But I shall read your link, good Sir.

Edit: Ironically, He says FF is the greatest RPG series of all time :)

Speaking of classic WRPGs, some good stuff just got released on GoG.

http://www.gog.com/

Now they need the Krynn series and Dark Sun: Shattered Lands.
