most games only excel in one area like xenogears, Final fantasy 10 and xenosaga have great stories but subpar gameplay, or gears of war, and halo series which have good gameplay but very poor stories.... IMO the following series or games have the best balance GTA series ( basically like playing through your favorite ganster movies) MGS series (always tons of cinematics with lots of story, and always great innovative gameplay to go with it) more games should try to achieve what these two series have which is having good stories accompanied with great gameplay....
The God of War series seems to me to have the best balance between story and gameplay. Also none of the Cutscenes are too long so you don't sit there thinking "this is interesting but I'd rather be playing the game".
