Im sure theres been a post like this somewhere but: What do you think the most timeless game is? What game can you play over and over again?

For me its Orcarina of time for the N64. I never get tired of it, the only part I would want to skip is maybe the water temple. It long and annoying. I also have played and beaten Batman Arkham Asylum 3 times. I dont know if thats just me, because Im a big Batman fan but I love that game too. Perhaps one more timeless game for me too is the simple Super mario or Yoshis Island.

The only game that I can think of that I played through twice is Mass Effect....After that, I played Halo:CEs co-op quite a bit...

*keep note I have yet to play a single game this generation*

Baldur's Gate one and/or two. I've played one nearly 3 times and two over 5.

When it comes to Zelda I pick ALTTP.

OOT - Beat over 3 times

ALTTP - Over 5 at least

But they're much shorter and I enjoy BG much more while playing.

You know, I saw the thread title, and instanty thought that the TC would name Ocrina of Time, and when I saw his user name I loled.

Why is it that everytime I see the phrase "timeless game" I know that a Zelda game will be mentioned?

Ocarina of Time is definetely timelss. I'd also say that Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World are timeless classics. The only games this gen that I've had a desire to play through more than once are Super Mario Galaxy (I'd play through that a million times) and Call of Duty 4 (I play the campaign a lot, but it's too short so it's not actually that much playtime even with repeated playthroughs).

As much as I hate to be cliche, I'd probably have to go with OOT. I've beaten it more times than you can hope to fathom.

I'm pretty sure OOT is the highest player rated game here at Gamespot. It's just loved by all that lived through that era.

Of course you have to take into consideration fanboyism and people who vote 1.0 for exclusives just because it's only for x-system.

Super Mario, since games went 3D all games have lost replayability to me. In fact if I complete a game its pretty surprising, I always lose interest, so I point myself more towards multiplayer games that are just for fun.

ALthough they are not my favourite games, it easily has to be 3rd and 4th gen mario games SMBros. 1+3 and SMWorld 1+2. One doesnt prove upon the other, making it natural to go back and play previous installements without it feeling outdated. You cant say the same about 3D Zelda games, especially OOT.

I don't question that. I am merely pointing out that the phrase "timeless" is basically a cliche term to talk about Zelda games.

On topic, there are a ton of RPGs in this catagorey IMO. I played a little Morrowind on my old Xbox last night...

Any of the Pokemon games, but especially Pokemon R/B/Y, and FFX for me. Love those games and will most likely continue playing them for years to come.

I have only one pokemon game, which is Pearl for the DS. They're all right but, I dont consider them timeless really. After I beat all the gyms im so happy its over and I never want to do it again.

I probably beat Super Mario 64 the most times. Followed by OoT, Super Mario 3, Perfect Dark and Super Mario World. My attention span was much better back then.

Ocarina of Time? The game looks like crap and the gameplay has been improved by Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. 5th generation 3D games cannot be timeless, none of them have aged well.

Pong. That is the correct answer if you are indicating it as a fact. The reason being? Well it has absolutely nothing to place it in any time frame, nor does it have any artistic, humor, or news of the time in any indicator in it. It is simply black and white squares. So in short it has nothing to tie it to a certain time.

First off, I don't think this thread was looking for the "correct answer"

Secondly, it does have a time and a place: the birth of video games. It is not out in some void like the Obelisk, holding some great truth about video games. It was the first video game, and many of the early video games were the same thing. Black drops, white pixels.

Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow . They may seem like "my first JRPG" but they're fun, addicting, charming and surprisingly deep when you get down to it.

Deus EX1. the only thing that will age with that game is the graphics. it still makes a mockery of every game released since....including racing games :P. other mentions Okami. itll never have a massive following but i can see it played 10 years from now by its fans. zelda a link to the past. pretty much anything from the blackisle/bioware days. BG, planescape etc. mario bros 3 and world. 3 for its out and out craziness and world for its scale, scope and polish....and its also pretty crazy.

All three of those bands are great times. *EDIT* Bjork is awesome as well

anyways here's a few off the top of my head.

Castlevania:SOTN

Super Metroid

Fallout 1 and 2

Silent hill 2

Super Castlevania

Blood Omen

SMT:Nocturne

I have tons more I feel are timeless, but I wanted to keep the list short and simple.

Personally: Super Mario World. Will always love that game and it will never age. Hell, it only gets better with age.

There are several I can name, but most notably Super Mario World and Deus Ex. I have finished SMW countless amount of times, to the point where I memorized almost every level and its secrets from head to toe. Yet I continue to come back to it, enjoying it plenty. Deus Ex is really special in this regard as well. It's the kind of classic that you want to play through again to see how far gaming has come, but when you play it you quickly remember that there's still nothing like it, and still one of the most intelligently designed games ever made.
