Both pretty much failed in what they set out to do. Vita promised a high end portable gaming machine that can play PS3 type games on the go. That never really happened, but Uncharted Golden Abyss and Killzone Mercenary are honorable mentions. Wii U tried carrying the torch from the Wii but then went ahead and released an overpriced underpowered system with lackluster games (in the beginning). They also missed the boat on the whole casual audience moving on to other things. Both Wii U and Vita have a cult following and are really appreciated by their core base.

So what do you think, SW? Will history look kindly on these systems despite their shortcomings? Or will they be quickly forgotten?

@SolidGame_basic: I think History will praise Wii U for having some of the best games since ever. best Mario Kart, best Smash Bros, best Donkey Kong, Xenoblade, best Bayonetta, best Pikmin, best Lego game, best AC, best Indie game Shovel Knight, best Rayman, best Dues Ex, best Skylanders, and best Batman. Plus more to come.

@iandizion713: that seems pretty optimistic. There will probably be more of many of those games on follow up consoles, and follow up consoles will probably last longer than the 4~5 predicted years of the Wii U. Nintendo consoles always have good first party games, but I don't think the Wii U has any particular game yet that will receive universal praise as one of the best games ever made (like Super Mario Galaxy gets, for example. Closest would probably be Bayonetta 2). It has a lot of very good exclusive games, a lot more than the One/PS4 right now, but those systems will probably amass enough exclusives by year 6 to make the list much more competitive, benefiting from a longer lifespan.

Ultimately, the Wii U and Vita will be remembered as failures. But the Wii U will be left in higher regard than the Vita.

The vita will go down as a joke. Sony has shown they don't give a rats ass about it. The wii U has a chance to be good so long as it isn't replaced by the NX in 2016

WiiU will have a fond remembrance from some forumites much like the dreamcast does now. Because it has interesting titles on it. But as console offering its a weak failure, period. It is a business failure and that is the number one, primary, grand poobah goal for these companies. To make money in business. Otherwise they would register as not for profit entities.

I hope the WiiU goes down to 150 bucks. Then, I'll get one.

I disagree with OP.

-Wii U is niche for certain genres. It is going to be a Hack N' Slash beast: Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge, Bayonett 2, Devil's Third

-Vita, though I do no own, provides its own niche. It is dual analog so hopefully it is utilized for FPS better than it currently is

I'd say that's about right. Unless they really output a ton of classics over the next year or two, it'll be remembered for the few gems that it had.

I forgot about the Vita, haven't heard anything on it in a while.

Both WiiU and Vita don't have much exposure in the real world, you don't see commercials for them. The WiiU at least has games coming for it like ZeldaU and Xenoblade, but Vita... lolvita

WiiU will be a console that so many people missed where people continually say, "I can't believe I haven't played this before"

Vita will be the most popular modders device.

I imagine the Wii U will be remembered more fondly than the Vita. Wii U has Nintendo's first party games to back it up. Good thing, too, because it doesn't have much else. Its first party games tend to be very well made; lots of polish.

Both will be remembered as wasted potential.

Wii U has already surpassed the dreamcast, IMHO, as far as underrated consoles go.

Vita...geez...i don't know.

Wii U will be like the GameCube, at least to an extent. A console hated until the end of it's lifecycle.

Vita, however... nope.
