Sonic much better than stupid old Mario. Everyone love Sonic. Very successful outside of video games as well. Forget about Mario he's so played out. According to polls Sonic is most recognizable. That why he in Olympic game.

It's Mario. He ressurected the gaming world back in the 80s. As for the guy who posted Sonic. Uhm, Sonic was cool but his games just plain suck now, his transition into 3D was horrible, except for Adventure 2. Also, Mario is played out? He still has tons of life going, as for Sonic, I've seen how many comics he has, he got sucked into too much anime and never came out the same.

Your being ridiculous. Ryu is a huge character everyone knows hadoken and yes my favorite fighting move is the Shoryuken but still he is not even close to Mario he is the most regonizable in the fighter genre and the most recognizable martial arts figure in gaming. My girl, sister, grandad, mom, or whoever wouldn't know what the hell a Shoryuken is but everyone knows who Mario is.

Everyone knows who mario is, you can ask anybody who he is, and i garuntee they will know who it is. Ask who Ryu is, you might not get the same results

And Sonic the Hedgehog of course never existed and there was no Sonic vs. Mario war... Well there was, it was just being controlled by the real champion, Ryu of course as he hid in the shadows...

I was joking until I saw your thread. You not a gamer. I can gauranteed your first gaming console was around late PS1, N64 era or PS2. To even say you played SF a little lets me know you wasn't around when it was a big hit.

I hate to see it, but due to the game's immense popularity, I'd have to say the CURRENT face of gaming is Master Chief. Outside of sytem wars, I bet alot more casuals could identify the MC than Mario. Personally, I think Mario is far more epic, but I'm just going by casual standards here...

Mario is the most recognized but doesn't mean Mario is the face of gaming, especially today.

If the question was which is the most famous character the Mario hands down IMO but as far as the face of gaming today, it's not Mario. Not sure what is really, gaming now is so huge and the variety is so amazing
