A lot of posts recently about hyped games not living up to it and games just being overrated junk nowadays. I agree. There have been very few games I've played the past several years that really were that good outside of graphics and hype. I think the uncharted series I really enjoyed but it's still a linear platformer and multiplayer is fun but pretty straightforward run around shooting bad guys.

I really like open world games but surprisingly some of the biggest letdowns are In this genre. I honestly don't know what developers are thinking anymore and why these games sell so much except just marketing and people buy this stuff because they have nothing better to do.

For me I'd say the uncharted series. Fallout 3 was really good but even that game was lacking in writing from previous games... Skyrim and GTA both look great but the stories in those games are really cheesy imo. Oblivion was an awesome game at the time. The first mass effect game. Other than that it's been all downhill for me.

Too many games to list but one game that I wanted so badly was Mass Effect 2:

My expectations were dangerously high. Yet the game surpassed in each and every way. The only thing I found a bit negative was dumbed down RPG mechanics but it was more polished. Each action was more meaningful than the first game. PLUS huge variety in side quests and locations. Then there is epic final level and great ending.

It technically flopped here, but it would seem that overall TLOU met the hype of most critics and gamers

For me? Lots. Someone out there overhypes every game, because they've let their imagination run wild. Happens to me too once in a while. For example I'm tearing through Suikoden now on my way to play its sequel, which I've been told over and over again for the past decade deserves consideration as the best RPG all time. I'm trying my best, but after years of hype I'm concerned I won't give the actual game a fair shake.

Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad, Mario Kart 8... pretty much every Nintendo game launched has met my hype. Its shocking because I was predicting AAAAE 10/10 GOTY for Bayonetta 2, and they found a way to meet that hype.

I think the issue with a lot of the games of that era, on N64, Saturn, or PlayStation, is twofold:

a) Most of us (though not all of us at all!) were growing up in that period and we attach fond memories to what we grew up playing, with it automatically becoming the best thing ever even when it is objectively not. See also: Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye.

b) Games of that era were proto 3D games, and they aged terribly. Even if they were actually amazing for their time, it doesn't matter because time has not been kind to most of them. Of course, there are exceptions- Final Fantasy IX, Majora's Mask- but not many of them.

Dreamfall Chapters. Only Book One is out so far, but it did live up to the hype.

I really wanted DA Inquisition to be really good. I kind of settled for it being just 'good' before I even got it. It's way better than I imagined it has way surpassed my expectations I feel I've gone back to a time where RPG's were epic undertakings with so much to see and do and explore and tons of complex characters to get to know. I see it as a kind of modern Morrowind I can think of no higher compliment. It certainly pisses all over Skyrim and Oblivion and pretty much all open world RPGs.

Demon Souls

For the record I didn't play it through completely for the first time until last year. I'm aware of the nonexistent hype it garnered prior to release.

Personally I'd have to say

TLOU, Skyrim, DA:I, Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 2, Kotor, ME1, ME2, MGS3, FE Awakening, P4G and majority of the LoZ games have met or surpassed my hype.

What a game that was. It would be an epic fail with the modern gamer. 'too many words'. Chimps.

To be honest, ME3 did live up to my personal hype. Shitty ending, shitty side quests, some questionable cinematic moments (f*cking kid dreams), but in the end, it did *meet* my expectations by being a solid game all around. ..... And Citadel DLC came out and obliterated any remaining sour taste.

The Witcher 2 also *met* my expectations. Though I can see it being improved a lot. Which hopefully will in The Witcher 3, which may very well be my most anticipated game of all time (as in I don't need it any time soon, but I expect it to be fucking amazing)

Pokemon XY was.... bit iffy. I love a lot of things about that game, but a lot of things in that game also annoys me.

Oh and Torchlight II. Came out exactly like my expectation.

Most Nintendo games live up to the hype for me.

And you can't forget Valkyria Chronicles. It's hyped to be the greatest game ever, and it lives up to that hype :P

I can safely say that Xenoblade Chronicles lives up to its reputation. I've put around 28 hours into the game ignoring every side-quest and just following the main plot. I hope i'm still a long way from the end of it, because i'm completely hooked. What an amazing game.
