New consoles often come with new controller changes i.e. touchpads, sixaxis, etc.

So what changes do you hope to see in the controllers for next gen consoles?

I hope Sony puts a better battery in the next dualshock, and also removes (or further dims) the light bar. Also, pretty "meh" about the touchpad

It would be nice if console manufacturers put just one pair of customizable paddles on the back that you can remap to face buttons

I really just like how they are now. A rechargeable battery for the Xbox would be nice and it looks like its finally coming. I don't see the point of changing a controller every gen with insignificant upgrades.

I would like longer battery life on the Playstation 5 controller; also not a fan of the triggers R2 & L2. For Xbox; the change to wireless would be nice. I feel the new Elite Controller 2 coming out this year may be the perfect controller. Hopefully it holds up; cause the first iterations had some issues with the grips peeling, stick issues, etc.

Wonder how long it'll take for BoxRekt and his boyfriend Quad to show up and derail the thread with more useless drivel.

Better battery life for Sony

Better Dpads across the board. Nintendo had it right with the SNES and no one seems able to really nail down the dpad anymore. The switch pro controller would have been the best controller ever designed if not for its faulty and hard as a rock dpad.

The PS4 controller is fine to me but it needs battery life more like the PS3 controller with 20-25 hours of gameplay, or better yet, the Wii U Pro controller, which lasted up to 80 hours.

If they did this with the PS5 and maybe added some paddles on the back, I would be fine.

Touchpad doesn't really do much for me. And we need to be able to turn off the light completely.

Xbox - This controller is already close to perfect and only needs two adjustments. First, make the controller a little bit bigger similar to the size that the Xbox 360 controller was. Secondly, work on improving the d-pad a bit more; maybe even pay Sega some money to allow the best d-pad ever, the Sega Saturn d-pad, to be put on the controller.

Playstation - Get rid of that stupid light, switch the left thumbstick and d-pad position so that the thumbstick is in the thumb's natural resting position, and use better quality material for the thumbsticks.

Nintendo - Use an improved Gamecube controller. Take the Gamecube controller and add a second Z-button to it, add a home button in the middle, replace the C-stick with a normal thumbstick, and replace that small d-pad with the SNES d-pad.

I know of the LT/RT & RB/LB buttons but not the ones you mentioned.

Yeah, if that touchpad was the drain on the battery they need to ditch it. That functionality basically never gets used at all. I thought it made sense and had tons of potential uses, but if developers aren't using it there's no point. I really hope they aren't putting some "second screen" nonsense on there for the PS5 as that would probably have similarly bad results.

I'm cool with the existing dualshock design otherwise, so hope it basically has the same feel as the DS4, maybe with a better d-pad and triggers as others have said.

Lol, any minute now...

Anyway, for me the XB1 controller is damn near perfect... maybe improve the d-pad and give it a nice proper textured grip. And if they go to rechargeable batteries, make them good ones that last a decent amount of time (like the Switch pro controller, and unlike the sh*tty DS4).

Next gen joypads should have no lights.

On PS4 controller, the light shortens the already short battery life, and is totally pointless. And even if you dim the light from options, its still glaringly bright when you play in a dark room. So you have to tape over it. Silly.

Microsoft could have a good built in battery and a d-pad that works.

Sony could have a controller where they place the left analogue stick where human thumbs naturally are. Not sure why some of you are content with bending your left thumb down to the dualshock's weird ass analogue stick placement.

Nintendo could give people a free Pro controller with the console since people already pay way too much for their weak hardware.

@storm_of_swords: if the sticks are asymmetrical, wouldn't at least one thumb be in an unnatural position? No thanks, not every game is an fps. Couldn't imagine playing Tekken, Street Fighter, or Mortal Kombat having one thumb lower than the other. Get an Xbox if you want asymmetrical sticks. All I want from a PS5 controller is a thicker/fuller design, beefier /smoother triggers.

No, because the primary control inputs for most modern games is not the d-pad or the right thumbstick, it's the left thumbstick and the face buttons. Therefore, the left thumbstick and the face buttons are where the thumbs should naturally rest when holding the controller like on the Xbox and Nintendo controllers.

Your complaint about one thumb being lower than the other makes no sense to me since on Playstation you are playing lots of games with one thumb lower than the other. Like I said, the primary control inputs for most modern games is the left thumbstick and the face buttons which means that on the Playstation controller, your left thumb will be lower than your right thumb very often. Even worse, your left thumb has to stay in a stretched out position instead of it's natural resting position.

Or they could come up with a better VR solution. The Vive does not require an annoying bright blue light and it tracks motion controls way more accurately than Sony's crappy solution.

For me, on the Xbox controller, most of what I want has now been done on the Elite controller from E3 2019. However, I would still really like to see a touchscreen that could allow you to accept things like invites without having to do anything to your game.

@drlostrib: If you want paddles on the back, it'll cost you over 150 bucks. It's kind of crazy how a controller with paddles costs as much as a nice mechanical Corsair keyboard and mouse.

The Switch Pro controller is pretty much perfect. The only things I'd ask for them to change are:

  1. Analogue shoulder buttons/triggers.
  2. Pinkie button or handle button or handgrip button to replace pressing L3/R3.
  3. Higher d-pad quality control.

Then it would be perfect I think? ^__^

They won't be able to match things like the Elite/SCUF in terms of quality, but basically any features they can get in that are viable within the cost... Cool. The higher-end controllers are great, both for the added weight, but customization as well. Other than that, a sizeable battery life if using an internal battery pack... Son'y DS4 was great, but charging constantly was a pain in my butt.

Xbox is my choice for next gen and currently, I have no issue with their controller. I don’t even mind using batteries as I have a plethora of rechargeables which work fine.

Microsoft - don’t change a thing. Please.

I rather like the DS4. Favorite controller thus far.

Probably just shrink or stylize the light bar. It will obviously stay in some capacity due to the PSVR BC.

I won't say no to a longer lasting battery but the current doesn't give me any issues as I don't have long play sessions anymore.

Stylize the touch pad to give it a more sleek look. It's fine the way it is but could look cooler.

I assume they will change the charge ports to USB C.

Allow PS4 controllers to be used as well for obvious reasons.
