New Half-Life: Alyx Documentary Shines Light On The Series, Developers Express Interest in A New Game For ‘More Traditional Platforms’

Much of the Half-Life: Alyx team is hoping the company will create a full-scale Half-Life game for more traditional platforms, but some are unsure Valve has the size and scale of personnel for such a project.

Good. please make proper Half life 3. theres also report that multiple Half life project got cancelled

"More traditional platforms" isn't the same as "more traditional game." Those cancelled HL projects include 2 VR games and one where most of the game world is procedurally generated. Like I said before, a "proper" Half-Life game is a technological showcase, and Valve will only do another one if there is something new to show.

The very excerpt you quoted cast doubt on the size of the studio being sufficient for the task. Don't start holding your breath.

Yeah I read an article about the "documentary" that was recently released, and some of the ideas were pretty out there. But still cool. The concept for HL3/Borealis sounded pretty neat; the game took place entirely on the ship, but through portals and time travel you experience all these things that happened behind the scenes of HL1 and HL2, i.e. the Seven Hour War, invasion, and so on.

I thought this little gem was nice :P

...some are unsure Valve has the size and scale of personnel for such a project.

Really? Really?! I would argue that big studios and large scale have been letting down AAA development, and us gamers, for years.

Not that I know anything about it, but I just feel like the industry would benefit from a general downsizing and downscaling. More studios, smaller studios. No more hundred million dollar marketing campaigns. Etc. etc...

So exciting!

I can't wait to tell my grandchildren when they are born that they will be able to enjoy a new traditional half-life during their retirement!

Should be out by 2024, 20 years after HL2. Who does that? Twenty years for a sequel?

Double down on VR and iterate on what they've done.

I'm glad Dorito Pope got to be a legitimate gaming expert man for 10 minutes, to have experience what it's like to have a soul, even if it's fleeting.

and those modders done much better job than valve themselve post HL2. its first time in history a MOD become full fledge SP game. its also best remake of all time.

Valve always hires a bunch of modders to work on their games.

Nowhere did Valve say they wanted to make a traditional HL game after Alyx.

Also the documentary is a slap on the face of all those who say Valve has been sitting on their a$$ses doing nothing due to Steam money. They have experimented more times on HL in the last 10 years than Ubisoft, Rockstar, Activision, Microsoft or Sony with their formulaic sequels. They just don't churn our sequels/unfinished products for easy money and care about quality.

It must be so surreal to work at Valve ... the company is in no way in any financial dire for the near future ... so there is virtually no pression at all , also all the guys working there should and must be very passional about the industry and yet, all their projects are either canned or so ambitious that will never see the light ... also the incredibly high expectations for all the cry babies (myself included of course) who are never happy with them ... not to mention the few horror stories here and there about the company enviroment as well.

So yeah ... what a weird and fascinating place to work at.

I wonder what is compelling this now. I think they're worried Epic might take their market and now they're playing their trump card in hopes of winning it back. Well, if this doesn't work, they got nothing left.

@lamprey263: Doubtful, Valve was experimenting with technology since well before Epic Game Store was a thing, including bizarre shit like reading the players pulse, Alyx was a toe in he water.

Meh. If they make a traditional Half-Life game and have a console version then perhaps I’d get it. If not then, oh well. I’m not really a huge fan of the franchise so it’s not exactly something that I’m chomping at the bit for.

In all seriousness, a HL3 game would be awesome. What would make it even more awesome are the mods that cone after that😮

It would come to console, maybe not immediately but eventually. Valve would even put Alyx on console if it was possible but it's not currently. Probably once psvr2 comes. They have a solid track record of making their games available wherever possible.

new half life sucks, it's nothing more than a dumbed down half life 2, gravity gun with hands instead of gun plus only acouple weapons plus no jump button plus more closed in environments/linear and less enemies on screen it's just a dumbed down half life for vr pure gimmick.

The best part is that after Alyx, you can clearly tell they still have talent to make a proper HL3. The fact that they aren't, doesn't even make any sense to me. Its guaranteed a shitton of sales.

I figure Half-Life 3 will be on next-gen VR. It'll push the next index which will likely have better resolution, and a wider viewing angle.

I don't see Half-Life 3 being a PC or console sequel in the traditional sense.

Raising the bar is a difficult task when the fans expect nothing less than perfection. Half-Life 3 would have to surpass everything that was exceptional about Half-Life 1 and 2, and tragically, that's a task that involves going back to the drawing board over and over again.

The vast majority of people who's played Alyx (as opposed to those who haven't grasping at straws) would have very little issue with Halflife 3 being VR i'm guessing. It's certainly something they build upon and do more with.

Alyx itself could actually do with something of a re-release imo as it does very much lack content and replay value. NG+ and bonus mods are a massive oversight imo.

Goobers using lines like "mods brah" don't excuse a lack of content or replay value in the base product.

I hope Valve atleast includes VR support if they're going that route.

It'll be a bummer to not be able to play in VR.

If they are only thinking about it then boy oh boy we will not get it anytime soon.
