Well, this gen has been going on for about 2 years now, so I figure it's time to compile a quick list of the best 5 games thus far in this generation.

Of course when it comes down to it, this list is just my opinion, but I promise you that I will supply you with rational reasons behind each of my selections that should appeal to common logic as a whole.

So, with no further ado, here is my list with some short explanations next to each title.*

*the following list is in no particular order of greatness

Dead Rising (Xbox 360):

Dead Rising is a rare gem of a game that brings together all the elements of an awesome entertainment experience. It has a great story that is packed to the brim with political commentary and vegetarian propaganda, it has awesomely over the top and bloody action using a myriad selection of everyday products to kill legions of the undead in creative and interesting ways, it has intense nail biting missions, and it has a slection of bizzare and fascinating characters that really draw you into this parkview mall in some rural town named Willamette, population 53, 594.

Was it difficult at times? Yes it was. This is not a game for the weak spirited. Was the survivor AI frustrating? Yes, frankly, sometimes it was quite stupid. Do either of these things really take away from this awesome experience? Hardly at all, and definitely not enough to keep this from being a disgustly awesome game.

Bioshock (Xbox 360, PC):

Bioshock is incredibly unique, that much is for sure. When the only source a video game's plot can be compared to within a reasonable degree is Ayn Rand's objectivist manifesto Atlas Shrugged, then you know you are in for something special. Bioshocks unique setting and incredible atmosphere truly set it up to intrigue the player, and its gameplay is smooth enough and cool enough to keep players hooked until the end of this tale.

Aside from an arsenal of modifiable weaponry and multiple types of ammo, the player also uses all sorts of genetic modifications like Telekinesis and Pyrokinesis to fight his way through the ruined hulk of Andrew Ryan's former underwater paradise. The game features intense and brutal combat, an amazing story, great physics and environmental interaction, and flexible modificatio systems. A few minor issues with repetition and pacing keep this game from being 100% perfect, but those issues are sure as hell not deal breakers, and really don't matter in the face of this stunning masterpiece.

Halo 3 (Xbox 360):

Come on. You knew this would be here. I know it is "hip" to bash on the Halo series, but for as much crap as these games take, Halo 3 is an absolutely kickass game. As we all know, Halo 2 had some big issues, and Halo 3 remedies those quite handily in the single player campaign which is a great experience in and of itself, and an incredibly satisfying conclusion (awesome ending, Bungie!) to a well made and well received game franchise.

And don't even get me started on the multiplayer options which are very extensive. Aside from the typical vs. MP, you can also play through the entire campaign on 4 player co-op, you can modify maps with The Forge, and you can create and save your own custom game types for others to play. Also, the community features are great, with a killer film saving and screenshot taking tool, and skill tracking and video posting on Bungie.net.

Halo 3 is wicked. End of story. With great single player, amazing multiplayer, and an unbelievable breadth of content and community options, Halo 3 is the consummate gaming experience.

Honorable mentions: Zelda TP, Gears of War, Lost Planet, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Crackdown.

Well guys, that is my list. I hope I've given some pretty rational reasons for my choices, and I would like to see your top 3 as well. Thanks for reading.

gears--set a new bar for technical graphics, great score, very fun co-op

bioshock--atmospheric as hell, engaging story with many twists, complex fighting system, plasmids and tonics

vegas--sweet cover system, most realistic shooter i've played on a console, intense online play

Not counting handheld games? Aren't they part of this generation?Mardil

They are a part of this generation... I just haven't seen any that I think deserve to be on that list.

You may list them if you'd like.

Here's my list: 1. Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii): The culmination of the 3D Zelda formula in a lengthy quest and the most story in a Zelda this side of Majora's Mask. This game was so big, so well executed, and made even better by the Wii controls. It's just fantastic. 2. Bioshock (360): A gripping narrative with believable and well-acted characters, beautiful environments, and great combat thanks to plasmids make this one an instant classic. 3. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii): This game was a total revelation in terms of FPS controlls when it came out. It is the best controlling first-person game I've ever played, and add to that the clever, engaging Metroid Prime formula and you have an excellent game. I would say this one stands toe-to-toe with the original Metroid Prime in terms of quality. Of course, I fully expect this list to change by the end of the year. With games like Galaxy, Mass Effect, Brawl, Ace Combat 6, Zack & Wiki, and so on coming out... it's a great year to be a gamer.

TESIV: Oblivion

Do I even need to explain this one? Many people preferred Morrowind due to a more traditional RPG-st.yle of gameplay, yet I found Oblivion's reliance on twitch mechanics a bit more fun. Oblivion also felt more organized and like a more polished version of Morrowind. My only complaint is the levelling system.

TLoZ: Twilight Princess

Another excellent LoZ, and 2nd to only Majora's Mask. It improves upon other games in the series, and is more of an evolutionary step, but it still managed to feel refreshing (to me, anyways). It also added many new characters/items and a more dark outlook on the LoZ universe.

Chromehounds

No, I seriously enjoy Chromehounds. By far the only game that I think deserves to be online only, yet it still had a singleplayer campaign. While the singleplayer was mainly a placeholder and wasn't much fun for more than your first runthrough, the online was excellent. There's nothing like getting a group of friends together, choosing a faction and creating your own custom hounds. The combat system was far deeper than it initially appeared to be, and many people still don't understand how it works with different armor types, ammunition types, etc. Even national elections used to effect the players, as certain presidents would fund research into the experimental parts, making them available in the shop instead of trying to win them in a lottery. The game includes nearly 300-350 parts which allowed for many different builds and hound combinations. Although the gameplay is more squad-based and tactical, it's definately more fun than more fast-paced mech games like Armored Core.

As of now I'm leader of a 12 person squad, although we've been playing since launch, we haven't stuck to the same group. Chromehounds is also practically a steal if you enjoy tactical-mech combat games. It costs $24.99 where I live. There are some minor issues with the online, and that's why I wouldn't say it's any better than it is (the server is meh-okay, and there are some pretty cheap-unbalanced hound builds.)

Honorable Mentions: The Darkness, Dead Rising, MP3: C. Maybe Bioshock.

As did I. I couldn't imagine it having the same replay value if they made it too easy.

And as for the TC's list, I'd agree with it. Although Eternal Sonata hasn't been released yet, so that might knock another off the top 3 for me. I also think Viva Pinata should get an honourable mention. It's a great game, and severely overlooked.
