The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Japanese Box Art Suggests The Game Will Have Violence and Sexual Content

The perception that Nintendo games are childish is wrong- they’re not childish as much as they are targeted at all ages, which just happens to include kids. In fact, in a lot of Nintendo games, adults will find some highly suggestive and provocative dialog, should they go looking.

But essentially, superficially, Nintendo games are kid friendly- there is no danger of playing a Nintendo game with gratuitous violence or expletive content, as an example, and you don’t have to worry about sexual content in a Nintendo game either (for that, you go look at fan art). Which is why The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s Japanese rating is so surprising- as spotted by NeoGAF, the game is rated for having sexual content, violence, and criminal activity. All of which is very… unlike Nintendo.

Now, to be fair, we already saw hints of this in the excellent story trailer for the game that Nintendo released– that trailer showed off large scale combat and conflict, as well as a shot of Princess Zelda bathing. So it seems like this may just be a Zelda game that requires parents to use those parental controls on Switch that Nintendo have been talking up.

I think many are just invalid's when it comes to putting it into proper language, when they call Nintendo "kiddy". Obviously much like a Pixar film which usually has parents laughing with their kids, these games hit both levels. But many, myself included more often than not, don't really care that these games will have something geared towards me. I like games MADE for my age without the need to include the kids. Obviously this isn't a concrete rule as I do like some.

Criminal content is nothing new for Zelda.

Twilight princess had some red blood iirc.

Sexual content on the other hand, while nothing I have seen in the storyline. There has been some... well unusual bits in prevoius Zelda games, like a certain hookshottable part of a statue in the desert temple actually damaging you.

Makes me suspect they will be a bit more open with these parts though.

I do believe Ocarina of Time did that already and that game was as Violence & Sexual Content as it can get for a N64 game. Looking at you naked Ruto, looking at you sexy Fairy Princess.

I just wish that CERO (Japan's rating organization) has as much information on game content as what the ESRB provides.

Yeah, its nothing, its just fantasy violence, mild suggestive themes, and use of alcohol.

I know it's off-topic, but I really wish we where getting the retail version of "I Am Setsuna". I love the artwork for the case, but I can't read Japanese, so importing it would be of little use to me.

I actually forgot about that game despite I did kinda play it in Rare Replay.

So I wouldn't expect much in terms of violence, sexual content, etc.

After the amount times Link has saved the world bout time Zelda gave him some action.

We shouldn't expect there to be violence and hot sex because of the box labels. I mean I bet the game will cause hot sex but it won't be in the game itself. If they are half as cautious in Japan as in Europe, we find those labels on everything from The Little Mermaid to Flowers In Motion.

I'm pretty sure we see Zelda's "O" face in the trailer.

What if by the end of the game, Zelda announces to Link that she's getting kidnapped by everyone because she prefers a bigger, longer and a thicker one?

Didn't Super Smash Bros Melee, and perhaps other smash games, get a T-rating for "violence?" And Zelda games have had their lewdness before (One example coming to mind being the Twlight Princess great Fairy)

breath of the Wild could bring things up a notch, I'm not expecting by that much though.
