The PlayStation ‘Dance Mat’

As Microsoft released the Kinect 2.0 for the Xbox One and the device is working astonishingly well, Sony is preparing for a battle and working on a new motion control. In a newly found patent registration made by Sony, we can get to know this strange invention.

The PlayStation response to the Kinect 2.0 will be a patterned dance mat.The user will be wearing some sort of cameras on their hands and feet. As the cameras read the pattern on the mat, they will be able to know the trajectory of the hands and feet of the player. Software, having the data that can be received from such a device could actually make a pretty accurate 3d skeleton of the movement of the player. However it is pretty limited because if the cameras are not facing the mat, the software will not be able to tell where the player’s limbs are.

The limitation should not be such a problem for the feet cameras, but players would have to play games with their hands facing down. It is yet unknown if Sony has a solution to this problem or not.

Even though the patent is detailed, information about Sony’s actions regarding the release of a new motion control is still very restricted. Nevertheless, even if they manage to release such a device in the upcoming year it will not be as innovative as the Kinect was a few years back.

Saying copying is like saying Sony is copying a desktop computer just cause they put a processor in their console. DDR is so old and established and.played out yet not quite, that it's way beyond the point of 'copying'
