Sony has 7.9 million PS+ subscribers

Is it just me, or does that seem pretty low? Didn't MS have like 12 million live gold subs? Which also sounded pretty low considering the number of sold xbox

It's not surprsing, considering multiplayer is now mandatory, but since those numbers count across PS3, PS4, PS VITA, it seems rather low, imho

Probably lost a load of subscriptions due to the service being so unstable. Why pay for something when its down all the time

..yea that sounds a bit low but remember this is the paid service and with the PS3 it's not mandatory.

btw, I didn't know the PSV had PSN+..

PS+ isn't required for Vita, but PS+ does give vita games and online backups

But yeah, didn't they say PS+ numbers increase like 200% on the PS4 a few months ago? Or was it doubled? It seems the Plus numbers might have been much lower before making multiplayer mandatory with the PS4.

Well i think that was from when they had 25 million XBL users, and they said half were gold. I believe the most recent XBL numbers were 46 million total, if we still assume half are Gold then that would be 23 million

@lostrib: 46 million was the lowest number i could find aswell. But since Free is free, i wouldn't be surprised if Gold was less than 50%. Still, i'm definitelly shocked it's only 10% paying. I was expecting between around 15 to 25%.

..again. It's hard to go from free online gaming to a subscription based service. And with XBLG, you didn't have a choice (IF you wanted to game online with the XB/360).

I activated my PS+ since Dead Nation came to PS4... Have maybe played 15 hours since then online. Total waste for me... besides the free games now and then that I already don't have.

Don't think I'll be resubing next year.

Compared to XBL? Yes, it's low. XBL have over 46 million users and over 20 million actual subscribers. The key reason it's so low on PS is because it's FREE on the PS3 to play online. Sony was foolish not to charge. Now they are still losing billions every year. $1.2 billion in net loses was reported this last quarter.

That is pretty low. I would have thought it would have been close to that just based on optional PS3 subs, but now with it being "mandatory" on PS4 - the attach rate of PSN+ should be way up compared to PS3.

With PS4 dramatically outselling Xbox One, my guess is that PSN+ subs will continue to go up - and Xbox Gold will continue to go down or at best be very flat. Wonder what Xbox Gold was at it's peak, it might have already been going down significantly from it's peak. That article you cite is from April 2013 before the PS4 or Xbox One even launched. With the way the launches have gone for both companies, I could easily envision MS losing more active 360 users than they have been gaining Xbox One users.

By this standard, neither is very appealing at the moment. It's not like Gold has anything good going on. Games with gold continues to be ancient, bargin bin games that you either already played or find in a $.99 bin at Gamestop.

Sony was almost "too good to be true" for awhile - often giving out full retail games that were barely a year old (sometimes less than a year). Unfortunately, more recently it seems like very they are stooping down to Games with Gold level...hopefully both of them start to rev it up a little bit as some of the early "next gen" games start to age enough to include them for free with the subscription.

That doesn't seem low to me. It doesn't seem high, but still not low.

Considering the PS3 doesn't require it and ppl are still going to be stubborn and not want to pay to play online.

Glad I only bought a 3 month sub that expires at the end of November. Only way I will renew this year is if they do that black friday deal again. Think it was 30 bucks for a year.

If Sony came right now with the announcement that I have to pay to play with my PS3 system I would gladly pay it,just as I galdly pay Live. The cost is very small when compared to what I spend in other things.

bet majority of those subscribers ps4 as if you on ps3 I find really no incentive to pay. Although yeah I don't pay despite having a ps4 since no games no games no gamessssssss

@notorious1234na: PS+ is the same subscription on both consoles, expect that in order to play multiplayer on the ps4, you need Plus.

It obviously explains the increase in Plus subscribers, but those numbers include PS3 subs, which considering the 80M + 13M, is less than 10%

I have a PS3 and PS4, and have never paid for PS+. It's just a complete waste of money for me since I despise online gaming in general.

That link doesn't really explain the context of the call, nor does it reveal what platforms. We can assume the 7.9 million is the total, but I'm not certain that's accurate. It's never safe to assume, since we've seen articles in the past with much larger PS+ numbers. This number makes more sense if talking just about PS4 (which just hit 13 million units, meaning a little over 50% of the PS4 users are subscribing), but we can't assume that either. There's holes that need answering before I can give a proper response.

There's a lot of questions that tiny sourced article doesn't answer.

What we do know is that PS+ has at least 7.9 million users. I'm not sure what to say about that without more details.

I own a PS4 and after 6 years of free PSN I can't bring myself to pay for it. I have a Xbox 360 and I paid for Live just to see if it were any different and it's not. PSN runs just as well as Live. I'm not paying to play online it's just not that important to me. I'll stick to single player only.

Pretty good. I let mine lapse on my PS3/Vita but picked it up again for the PS4, since it's my go to system for exclusives and multiplats.

Common sense will indicate that PS3 owners wouldn't pay because the incentives are not there. The biggest one being online multiplayer. All ps4 owners are locked out unless they pay so naturally boom incentive formed. Not many on PS3 is paying for the run of the mill mediocre games that are part of the PS+ program.

Yeah man, the biggest jaw dropping hypocrisy on SWs I can remember. I was speechless at the acceptance on here after two gens (Xbox and Xbox 360) of BS the cows gave the Xbox fans. Telling us half our games were held hostage and how dumb people who got it were and how Sony would never do it, oh and how much the actual cost of the console was when you add up the fees year after year. There was like, a new thread every other day on it.

7.9 million subscribers is still a lot considering nearly all growth is coming from PS4 adopters.

I have and am an xbox live member for 10 years.
