Before I begin, let me say that I've only ever beaten San Andreas. I have played most, if not all of the other ones.

I cannot understand why people think its such a great game. Every time I played it, I could barely play for more than a few minutes until the novelty wore off and it seemed like a game a bunch of ganster wannabes play.

The game has racing, shooting, sandbox, crime and some other stuff in it sure, but all of it is much inferior to any game that is based on any one or two of those aspects. Want to race? Play Gran Tarismo or Forza, Want to shoot? Play any of the tens of shooters available both in first-person and third-person. Want quests or a story? Play an RPG like Witcher, Skyrim, etc. Action/Adventure? Play Zelda, God of War, Dark Souls, etc.

I won't say the graphics are normaly a tier below average but its usually a large city so that's expected.

Someone, please, objectively explain why this franchise is so great.

I never got this with anything Rockstar does... sure they have good atmospheres and the fact that they manage to make a game feel realistic is impressive, but that's all it is... an impressive technical accomplishment. The gameplay is usually weak at best. Form what I've seen, they make the games realistic to a fault, letting it get in the way of the fun. I think other games like Just Cause 2 capture that feeling of a "sandbox" much better.

It's a legitamte question when a series that always gets near perfect ratings across the board has a hgue lsit of flaws that are very noticeable.

I think that the "realism" you're reffering to... is not truly the case here. I believe the games just shifted to appeal more to casuals...

There is no huge list of flaws. And near perfect ratings does not mean the games are perfect.

Ok let me put it this way... The game, claiming to be a sandbox, is way more grounded in reality than, say, Just Cause 2. And that, to me, makes it weaker. You get a huge ton of toys to play with in JC2, and the crazy stuff you can do is nearly infinite... It's a simple hoy to just mess around and see what kind of physics defying stunt you can pull off. GTA, whie having some fun options, does not allow for that same type of over the top fun tat should define sandbox games.

Guess we have different thoughts on it. I don't mind realism in games, but IMO Rockstar's mroe recent games that I've played get too caught up in it.

I agree with you. One example is driving is not fun in GTA anymore. There is far too much traffic, too many cops and if you just bump a car near one then you have to run from the cops, dealing with toll booths, ect.

Exactly! Sure the fact that there's a lot of traffic might be realistic, but if I wanted to obey traffic laws, I'd go and drive IRL. When just getting from mission to mission spawns a cop chase, there's an issue... Sometimes, I jsut want to get there. I don't want to be chased.

Clearly you miss the point of the game.  It is not trying be 10 games in one. They are giving you open sand box game in a city envoriment to tell a story. it would be pretty stupid if they didn't provide things to do

Also Clearly it's not your type of game

I prefer the more "action movie ridiculousness" with games like that. It's why I love dicking around in Just Cause 2.
