I hate to see people losing their jobs and I hope they land on their feet really soon. That said, London Studio would have been the first to go for me as well.. I mean if one has to go make it VR.

6 % profits... Down from 9% last year and down from 12 and 13% from years prior.... Is Playstation heading towards the red?
But REVENUE is the most important aspect here. It doesn't matter if they only make $1 profit, it's the fact that they made BILLIONS in revenue!
lol, i know right 🤣
the bitterness over PlayStation's change in strategy has completely melted his brain.. go ahead and build that PC dude..
Yet the only thing that's confirmed to have been canceled are live service titles. I've been trashing their new strategy since they announced it and I keep getting proved right. 🤣.
their new strategy is the result of a failed old strategy.. 😐
their new strategy will likely get them back on track in the long-term..
[...]
They are currently in the position they are in now because they put to many resources into live service games that can't even pass quality checks.
They over staffed these studios to build games that won't even launch and now their cutting the fat.
[...]
go ahead and keep your head in the sand, but Sony is letting you know why they are in this position:
creating hyper-expensive "one and done" singleplayer games (with no continued monetization) and limiting them to a single sector of the console market..
they are now trying to correct course.. and if they can get out a couple more live service games like Helldivers 2, along with expanding their software on PC, they'll be in a much better spot moving forward..
Appealing to hardcore gamers isn't all that profitable, but we knew that already. The hardcore gaming demographic isn't growing. We see that with the combined PlayStation and Xbox consoles for each generation. Each one is around the same number. The issue is, games are getting more expensive to make, because hardcore gamers are huge graphics whores. So more expensive to make while having the same sales. Sony going towards the red because revenue doesn't equal profit.
This could be why there are rumors that Sony and Microsoft are making handheld consoles. As seen with the Switch and previous platforms, there is money to be made in the handheld gaming market. Especially with our culture moving on the go, mobile and handheld gaming is getting more and more appealing. That unfortunately means weaker games on the handheld systems.
They were one of the studios that did nothing but made profit for SOny
According to who?
SM, MM, R&C, SM2. All of them heavy hitters, both critically but especially commercially. The recent leaks also confirmed it.
Yup, I haven't seen that they did nothing but make profit for Sony. In fact, it's Sony that said they they rely on third party games to fund first party games. That means the games are not profitable or are barely profitable.
I think this has less to do with economics of game development ballooning to unsustainable levels, or the economy at large. This is nonetheless a cost consideration, but one where they've come to the realization they don't need to invest heavily in signature first party content to maintain their market edge. People flock to PlayStation regardless of their first party offerings, hence there's really no point investing in their first party studios if there's no market competition to consider from Xbox side. Rather, they can just sit back and rake in third party royalties.
Perhaps to large degree the complacency of their fanbase and gaming media at large owes a lot to these latest developments. A whole generation defined by years of remakes/remasters and bad PC ports gets rewarded, why wouldn't they see their best outcome for their bottom line to gut the unnecessary expenditures of first party development if it won't make a lick of difference.

Except that isn't true.
The studio that cost them the most money and who is mostly responsible for their slim margins is Bungie. The multiplat live service dev who hasn't released anything in 6 years.
Helldivers 2 is popular but we don't know how much revenue it's actually generating. For every HD2 their dozens of failures and the main reason for their slim margins is they paid millions of dollars for live service projects that will never release.
Spiderman 2 despite costing 300 million to make has already generated 700000 million in revenue in a mere 4 months. That's far more then a shitty live service game that will end up being a 150 million dollar write off. Which buy the way they have cancelled at least 4 live service titles that we know of.

What a ridiculous thing to say. Path of Exile is aimed at the ultra hardcore, while Diablo 4 was aimed at soccer dads that have 45 minutes of free time to play per day. Guess which game is significantly more successful? Yea, it has nothing to do with hardcore. What matters are just good games, and Sony hasn't been delivering anything at all, nor is there even anything to look forward to, something we've never seen before.
And what makes you think that good graphics=expensive? Helldivers 2 looks very good, and it was made by an indie developer lmao. What's expensive is the voice acting, motion capture and cutscenes, and these three have nothing to do with visuals. You're so damn clueless, sheep!
Solid avoiding this thread I see lmao
It's not just Solid avoiding this thread, its @loudheadphones that's missing the most, he was all up in THIS thread posting pics like this one
Having a go at Phil for turning up to Blizzard only to cull some of its employees while totally ignoring old Jimbo doing the exact same thing
Visiting a studio before culling it.
So where is the same enthusiasm @loudheadphones, seems you've gone MIA 🤣

Spiderman 2 is one game.. one game with a widely popular "household name" IP (Marvel's Spiderman; a luxury most games don't have).. and even with that one "success" there was a clear drought in Sony first-party AAA content both before the release of Spiderman 2 and now after the release of Spiderman 2 (until April 2025 at the earliest)..
^ that is not sustainable..
relying on a "one and done" singleplayer games that take 5+ years to develop (with ever-increasing budgets) and limiting them to one plastic box is not sustainable (per Shawn Layden and Jim Ryan)..
so keep twisting yourself in a pretzel to place the blame anywhere else, but SONY has already told you what their future is: it's an aggressive multiplatform expansion to PC and mobile (per the CEO)..
So either get on board with that or build that PC.. because if the "old way" was working, Sony wouldn't be making these changes.. it's just as simple as that..

God of War, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, Uncharted , Horizon, l... just about every IP they have had has been successful
Im just telling you facts ? This drought is only because they waisted billions of dollars on live service trash that couldn't get past quality control.
They are in this position now because their new strategy is failing. It's been their strategy for the past 3 years and this is where it has gotten them. One successful live service title in 3 years 🤣

yes, all great games.. I've personally played over half of those and the ones i played were absolute bangers.. BUT, those games take 5+ years and hundreds of millions of dollars to develop (with increasing costs and stagnant install bases)..
that's not sustainable.. the drought both before and after Spiderman 2 is clear evidence of that..
so, as a result of a failing strategy, they have a new strategy.. a strategy where their FIRST effort at a new live service game was a breakaway success.. 🤣
just build that PC.. it'll be okay..

There was no drought until 2023 when they forced all their sudios into doing live service titles. 🤣
We would have Naughty dogs new ip if it weren't for the now defunct Factions game.
This is the result of their new failing strategy. One successful live service title and 5 cancelled ones 🤣.

spin however you want but Sony executives are telling you that the old strategy was no longer working.. 🤷♂️
so you can feel free to tell yourself whatever you want to make yourself fell better but Sony is telling you what the future of PlayStation is.. if you don't like that future, feel free to build that PC.. and PlayStation will continue to be the dominant console brand regardless..

They are telling investors that their new strategy will work to avoid massive backlash... They didn't spend 3.5 billion dollars on a live service studio in order for it to fail but the fact is thats exactly what it's doing.
I'm just telling you what will happen. The PlayStation brand will be all but irrelevant in the console space within the next decade and Nintendo will most likely take the crown. That is if they continue to follow the live service multiplat push.
The usual Sony dick riders are missing.😂
🤣🤣 yep, they are always missing when bad news for sony, but when something goes against xbox, they always show up like clockwork.

I'm here. LOL.
London studio in 5 years didn't provided any noteworthy to show despite it is just 20 people, yet Sony invested in them constantly. Their last game was Blood and Truth from 2019. They were just a money pit. Consequences are inevitable.
MS bought Blizzard and.....GTFO from a company. That's the difference. Anyway, sad to see people were laid off. But Xbox peeps knows.

Nah, nah, nah that 💩 doesn't fly around here and you know it. First off, you're making excuses for Sony while throwing the book at MS for the same thing. It's a cop out from you, but totally expected because when it comes to Sony you have no backbone.
Like I said I want the same enthusiasm you went at MS with just a month ago, not this watered down excuse making response.

lol bold prediction.. i guess we'll check back in with you in 10 years.. 🙄
btw, Nintendo is no longer in the traditional home console business (and if they were, the Switch has already "taken the crown" according to your logic).. you clearly have no idea what you are talking about..
just build that PC and stop whining..

London studio existed for 20+ years. Stopped being productive in last 5 years. Not productive - closure was imminent then.
Mind you that Phil Spencer bought Blizzard and PROMISED job security and later - Dear Blizzard peeps. GTFO.
But lets celebrate how Xbox is going fully 3rd party. Day to remember
But the question is why do you keep lying? And the other perPLEXing thing is why did you flip out?
Me lying? LOL Far from it. You are lying. You are an Xbot here, then PRETENDING to be neutral on the other site, yes. Also, you've contributed to toxicity by Xbots on GAF before. Mind you that you are under watch on Icon. One **** up, you're out.
@loudheadphones: If a studio under Sony becomes less productive that is Sony's fault. They've obviously mis-managed them like they have their other studios to the point Sony has no first party games for the next 18 or so months, but, but Xbox third party lol.
You simply don't have a backbone when it comes to criticising Sony. You're in the church of Sony and will defend your Godny no matter what they do until the cows come home.
At least we know why you called yourself loudheadphones because when it comes to Sony doing bad things you simply put those headphones on and turn them up to loud to ignore all the noise about it.

We are glad Sony is going fully third party. Great news for gamers around the world! Well besides you. You don‘t even have a PlayStation lol.
No idea why so many are pretending to be upset about job losses when they do not even know the employees that were let go. If these were a bunch of DEI hires that did not deserve the job anyways then good riddance. Lets be real they are not firing people that are talented that can help on other projects. Most of the people fired were probably only hired to look politically correct and not hiring the best person for the job.
I am glad companies are hurting for hiring for racial reasons and not quality reasons.

Is it. Sony was pumping money into them. Did London studio have a willing to work. They surely have a deadline to make something. Looks like they've didn't managed in last 5 years, simple as that.
Sony has no first party games for the next 18 or so months, but, but Xbox third party lol.
MLB is 1st party. Stellar Blade and Helldivers 2 are 100% funded, published and owned by Sony. So, these 2 are 1st party games. You've literally posted in Moon Studios thread and talked about Ori, mentioned how it is a MS owned IP, which is a 1st party game.
Man, no wonder why Xbox is fucked up because its damn fandom. Look around you, you, Xbots are fucked up. Demolished, delusional, bitter, sad, mad, totally mental destruction.
Go run honorary last_lap in the name of Xbox defeat for good.
