throughout their history i'd say sega. unlike nintendo they aren't held back by their 'family friendly' values and have taken more weird creatve risks, unfortunately they aren't as original now as a software company as they once were, but neither is nintendo.

Sega for sure, they were for years at the forefront of creativity even on some of their biggest games, and they took risks like no other console manufacturer.

Nintendo, their progress in creativity is slow but steady, Sega though keeps trying to see if Sonic will catch on again and it's sad at times, last great game they made IMO was Panzer Dragoon Orta, excellent game but commercially limited given it was an original Xbox exclusive, they didn't have the vision to see that they made a remarkable game but failed to sell it, so instead of maybe seeing if they can recreate that experience for a wider audience they dissolve the studio, so sad. Also, Sega published both Vanquish and Bayonetta, who great games made by the talented people that were the creative backbones of Capcom, they barely gave those IPs any chance to see if they can catch on, then refused funding for sequels, now Nintendo is footing the bill, so more brownie points for Nintendo. And I'm even more saddened the spiritual successor to Panzer Dragoon, Crimson Dragon, is going to be a Kinect Arcade title, and it was even supposed to be released by now and it hasn't and Sega has said nothing, which saddens me even more, so Nintendo just keeps looking better.

Sega obviously. They were too creative for their own good. It was their downfall.

Sega (or nay gaming company for that matter) never had such a dream team.

Shigeru Miyamoto, Satoru Iwata, Eiji Aonuma, Masahiro Sakurai, and Eguchi. You could consider Kojima part of that team but he's a dick now and doesn't want to put Metal Gear on Nintendo platforms so no.

You know, I am really saddened that noone wants to give Sega any credit. During the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's, Sega was Nintendo's equal when it came to coming up with innovative and unique games. During their glory days, they created Virtua Fighter, Seaman, Jet Set Radio, Sonic the Hedgehog(yes, it was innovative at a time when every platformer followed the Mario formula), helped push 3D with the Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3 arcade boards, created some of the greatest arcade games of all time,

And let's not forget some of the innovative and unquie games that Sega published such as Toejam & Earl, Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Fighter, Sonic the Hedgehog, Seaman, and numerous IPs. Sega created some of the most unique gameplay experiences of all time, and proved their willingness to step outside the box more then once.

The problem is many people only know the modern Sega and therefore have no idea how much Sega brought to the table with gaming. One of the biggest issues is the fact that most of Sega's most innovative games and ideas never left the arcade. Not to mention, games like Panzer Dragoon never were that successful, which means many people don't even know about those titles.

But Sega was Nintendo's equal during the 4th, and 5th generations of gaming when it came to quality games and bringing new ideas to the table.

Yu Suzuki,AM2,SOnic Team,Sega Technical institute.

Thats all i really need to say.

And heres a bit thats gonna blow your mind the NES ports of MG were actually heavily butchured and Kojima doesnt even consider them MG games unlike their MSX counterparts which is strangely a PC...and even more hillarious is that it was a machine manufactured by Sony.Just would really like to point out your ignorance and unfound hatred towards Kojima.

Its because people don't like new things they can't immidiately understand. Sega didn't give people exactly what they wanted, they were more creative and were constantly focusing on a new game or new IP, outside of sonic. Even then they didn;t even release a proper Sonic game on the Saturn, they decided to focus their efforts on a unique amazing title like NiGHTS instead.

Nintendo just puts a spin on an existing ip any time they have a new idea. But then the new ideas they have when applied to certain ips have to follow a set of rules and guide lines. Making the experience not nearly as unique as it could be.

They would never ever ever take the same creative risks sega made. In the jump to 3D they dropped almost all of their popular 2D properties. Nintendo has barely created anything new since then. While its all well and great, and I love Nintendo, in terms of sheer creativity, and the company who was more willing to create a new gameplay experience I think it obviously goes to sega.

Sorry I called out your god king Playstation drone on his BS... Making every excuse in the book to not make a Metal gear on a Nintendo platform. SK developed Twin Snakes, he barely had anything to do with that project. So he wanted his character to be in Brawl because his son asked... But he doesn't want to develop a game of any sort for the console it's on? Fu. ck him. If MGS5 came to the Wii U I wouldn't support it. Now he's giving the excuse for the Wii U "the game has to be unique" coming from the guy that makes Metal Gear after Metal Gear. So would he have to make something unique for the PS4 if it had a VR helmet? Exactly.

Yu Suzuki, Yuji Naka, STI,Rieko Kodama, Team Andromeda, and many of Sega's teams were just as good as Nintendo's during the 90's. Those were the ones who made games such as Sonic, Virtua Fighter, Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia, Panzer Dragoon, and numerous other IPs for Sega. Sega was Nintendo's equal when it came to putting out high-quality games on their systems. In fact, it could be argued that most of Sega's current problems is due to the fact that many of those teams were disbanded or reorganzied and many of those people on the list retired or left Sega.

Nintendo's names might have been more famous, and there's no doubting the genus of a man like Miyamoto, but let's be honest here. Sega in the 90's was as good as Nintendo when it came to coming up with new ideas for games. The problem was the fact that many of their games either stayed in the arcade or never sold that well.

I always thought the idea behind Sonic the Hedgehog was very creative. It avoids violence against living things by freeing animals trapped inside robots.

He has a unfound hatred towards Nintendo. "The game has to be unique" that's his reason for not making any games for the Wii U? And it's not just Kojima, It's RockStar, Crystal Dynamics, Electronic Arts, etc. Nobody in those board rooms stands up and asks "Why not?"

Kojima is very invested in making a massive videogame experience, with tons of cutscenes, a lot of voice acting and high quality music and sound effects. Things that have not been at the for front of Nintendos concerns when making a console since the snes. If Nintendo just used a disc format for the n64 Metal Gear Solid would have been an n64 game.

So we can include development studios? Retro and Rare. THATs all I really need to say.

Im listing off parts as influential as them, Miyamoto once said im not a programmer im a designer NOT ALL the praise should ever land on 1 person when it comes to a franchise in my book as the whole studio plays a key role in its developement from even the simple things like concept art down to the programming.

People always praise Miyamoto for Super Mario 64 or Zelda OOT but fail to remember he didnt do half the work to make those games what they are.

But if you really want to play that game AND be a complete ignoramus as you seem to be then im gonna say look up what Yu Suzuki done for the Arcade scene in the 80's/90's some of the games he designed still stand head and shoulders above the rest even today.

Not to mention Yuji Naka lead designer of Sonic(until adventure 1).Nights and PSO (original one).

Also Mark Cerny who after Sonic 2 left Sega to go to the newly formed Universal Interactive Studios (which were Naughty Dog and Insomniac) and became Executive Producer on Crash1,2,3,Spyro 1 and 2, and played a role in helping with Jak and Daxter 1's design aswell as Uncharted.

Sega's still pumped out some pretty good designers over its tenure.

But mind you Sega has The Creative Assembly,Sports Interactive,Valkyria Chronicles team,Smilebit.

Not to mention Sega's AV studio made the best F-zero game aswell....ironic.

I honestly implore you to go looking at what Kojima was doing to get Snake into smash bro's.

You honestly are the epitome of dumb ignorant and completely delusional.

For 1.You clearly know nothing bout the MG developement history.

2.Kojima went nuts bout MG1 on the NES as its a heavily butchered port

3.Kojima literally pleaded to get snake into smash bro's

4.Kojima sanctioned a full blown remake with him as a creative overseer on the Gamecube of MGS1 done on the MGs2 engine with more fleshed out features and tweaks it was a fantastci game.

I honestly ask you to do some reasearch instead of conjuring up a cauldron of bull manure.

Have you ever stopped to think that maybe Nintendo themselves might be to blame for the unwillingness of third-party companies to hop on board the Wii U? These developers know far more then either one of us when it comes to both the Wii U and the potential power of Sony and Microsoft's next systems. Maybe they don't want to invest any money developing for a system that might end up being a stopgap when the Xbox 720 and PS4 both come out.

Nintendo is the one that is selling 2005-2006 tech that is slightly beefed up alongside a tablet controller and pretending this is a new system. If I were a developer and saw specs that were only slightly better then the 360 and PS3, why would I get excited? Especially if the new systems from Sony and Microsoft blows the Wii U away in terms of power and capabilities.

One other thing to consider is this. Is Nintendo requiring Wii U pad support for every game? If so, then that leaves even less incentive for developers to bother porting 360 and PS3 games.

It's not an unfounded hatred of Nintendo. Simple fact is, Nintendo's constant desire to be different from the other systems on the market has bit them in the ass time and time again. The Nintendo 64 lost Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and missed out on games like Metal Gear Solid due to Nintendo's refusal to use CDs and it got its ass kicked by the PS1, the Wii for all of its success never got major third-party support due to offering under-powered hardware that was barely at the level of the Xbox, and the Wii U is following the same path.

About the only systems Nintendo tried to keep similar to their competitors was the NES, SNES and the Gamecube. And even the Gamecube had some serious problems since Nintendo did not support online play or DVDs .

And that's the problem, the developers can't be blamed for not wanting to work on Nintendo's hardware. Nintendo does not really offer them the best hardware to work with in the first place. Let's be blunt here, Nintendo has not had excellent hardware that was equal or better then their rivals since the SNES. Every other console they have made since that time has had some flaw that has held it back.

Respect to Nintendo and what they've done to gaming since the 80's however I always prefered SEGA..

I got nearly all of SEGA's hardware (except the 32x / CD add ons) and the only time I got disappointed was when they got out of the console hardware business...

Sega Master System - was a good system and offered some great games

Sega Mega Drive - Amazing system with a huge games library

Sega Gamegear - Great games offering best visuals in color for a handheld..

Sega Saturn - Solid games library

Dreamcast - Such a pity for this great system to have 'failed' in capturing interest from more gamers considering it had so many great games & online features..

Without Sega, Nintendo would have never pushed itself to reach unattainable heights

That's actually a very tough call. Despite me being a bit of a Nintendo fanboy I can't deny how creative Sega has been overall. I'm just gonna say that both companies have done a great deal for the industry in their time and both have been very creative over that time too.

Malta_1980

this is not who you prefer, its who's more CREATIVE

Nintendo on the consoles, Sega on the arcades...

Sega's consoles were a mixed bag, imo. (except for DC, which was awesome, if prematurely retired)

SEGA, and this is no competition if you know some sh*t about their history. They made so many incredibly creative IPs each generation, up until they gave up on the hardware bussiness, the Dreamcast & Saturn is filled with unique, genre blurring games that have never ben replicated.

Nevermind their total incredible list of ageless & revolutionary arcade titles from the late 80s (Space Harrier) and 90s (Daytona). Hell, have you seen how good Virtua Fighter 3looked in the arcades? That was 1996 release.

SEGA. SEGA Channel, SEGA Activator, online for the Saturn and Dreamcast, SEGA 32X, SEGA CD, their arcade games like Virtual On and Virtua Fighter, etc. Say what you want about how they failed, but they sure as hell tried new things, and they didn't rely on the same old properties. I'd like to see Nintendo make a game as unique as say NiGHTS into Dreams.

Sega obviously. They were too creative for their own good. It was their downfall.

What was so good about 32X and SCD?

SCD was far too early tech and under-utilized and 32X was just a graphics booster that died off too soon.

It's addons like these why Sega lost a lot of reputation they built before...

NiGHTS was nice but if you want uniqueness check out Doshin the Giant...

What was so good? They expanded on the power of the Genesis and added to an already terrific library. Most that bash them probably have never even bothered to play their games, let alone seen the actual hardware in real life, and likely just use AVGN videos to formulate their judgement.

I know about Doshin the Giant, but I don't see what's so special about it. It's just another play as God game, that has a small but loud fanbase. NiGHTS was the Saturn's showpiece, and yet it's only one example of SEGA's vintage creativity.

Mortal combat controversy: the blood on sega was red, nintendos was fcking blue. Glad the shelter children coalition never caught on, god help us if Nintendo was the only console in the early to mid 90s.
