Rise in PC gaming sees Nvidia post better than expected

PC gamers helping these chipmakers once again

"Interestingly, Nvidia's better than anticipated results were down to strong sales of high-end graphics processors to PC gamers.

"Quarterly revenue came in well above our outlook, driven by PC gaming, capping an outstanding year for our GPU business," said Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. "Tesla and Quadro both achieved record annual revenue."

Nvidia's fourth quarter growth in its GPU business to revenue of $947 million showed a 14 percent increase year over year. The company said that graphics sales were particularly strong for desktop PCs, with its Geforce GTX GPU sales increasing nearly 50 percent.

The boost in PC gaming division comes as a surprise, considering the recent reports from market analyst firms such as Gartner and IDC, which have both said that the PC market is slowly dying."

Nvidia still butthurt over the fact they chose to pursue opportunities in the PC and mobile markets rather than make GPUs for consoles.

I had a feeling PC Gaming has been trending this past year. The conversion has begun.

This is pretty much what´s expected,as the crappy pre built desktop sales die down the PC enthusiast hardware market will keep it´s meteoric ascension.

Console gaming is getting stale. More and more people are switching. Would you rather play a ton of new and interesting games, or three sequels a year to stale franchises with the same old game play and linearity?

So much all that bs from console fanboys that pc gaming hardware market was shrinking yet forget how important gpu sales are for these chip makers

Good to hear, especially after they lost out to AMD for the consoles.

Nvidia made them an offer IIRC, both Sony and MS declined as it was too expensive.

That's what I remember as well. AMD clearly went in with a lower bid, and i'm not surprised MS/Sony went for it. It didn't seem to be much of a duel over the prices.

although the PC market is currently in decline (i wonder if it has bottomed out yet?) the enthusiast sector is expanding. It is possible for both conditions to be true.amd, intel and nvidia have all said this.

an odd thing to see in a recession but, then, macs are also getting more popular (boo hiss) and the i saw a news article about luxury and sports cars becoming more popular.

the part of the PC sector that is in decline is the 500 quid laptop sector and low end desktops.

its not even that people are replacing them with tablets. its just they dont need to replace their PCs. if you dont do high end stuff on your computer then a 10 year old computer that was good in its day will still do the job.

basiclally the low/mid range PC market and the wiiu have the same problem. they lack new and compelling content to attract new people to buy the hardware (of if its there then no one knows).

in fairness i still got some pretty decent gaming done on a 500 quid laptop though. i was pleasently surprised.

Part of what happened was Sony and MS would have to go to another vendor for a processor if they went with Nvidia and Nvidia's offer was too much for them to make it worth wild. AMD had a bid of a cpu and gpu in one neat package with APU's so it was the end of that duel.

That definitely makes sense. AMD has a huge advantage in that area, especially in terms of cost.

It probably didn't help that both companies got boned by nvidia in previous gens.
