Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has some sharp words for Microsoft and Sony: you react to us, not the other way around.

Speaking to CNET in a telephone interview today, Fils-Aime brushed off an assertion that the Wii U could be faced with irrelevancy issues if Microsoft and Sony launch their new consoles in the coming year, as expected.

"In the end, our competitors need to react to what we're doing in the marketplace and need to figure out what their innovation will be," Fils-Aime told CNET. "It's likely that faster processors and pretty pictures won't be enough to motivate consumers. They need to react to what we've done and we need to continue innovating with the Wii U and we will."

Nintendo launched its Wii U console last week. According to Fils-Aime, his company has sold 400,000 units in the U.S. since that launch. The Wii U is being called the first next-generation console, but with HD support and graphics that about match the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, some say it's actually a way for Nintendo to catch up to the current generation and the company launched the device too soon.

"We don't believe so," Fils-Aime said in response to those claims. "For us, launching new systems is about bringing new consumer experiences to the marketplace and we're doing that with Nintendo land and third-party publishers are doing it with games like ZombiU. For us, now is the right time to launch new hardware."

Still, the Wii U will need to compete with products that will likely deliver vastly improved hardware compared to Nintendo's option. Last week, a copy of magazine Xbox World leaked divulging knowledge it claims to have of Microsoft's next console, the Xbox 720. That device, according to that leak, will include improved graphics, an enhanced motion-gaming experience with the Kinect 2.0, and a Blu-ray drive. If those features came to the Xbox 720, the device would be far more powerful than the Wii U.

Sony is believed to be working on a similarly powerful PlayStation 4.

At least so far, Fils-Aime isn't concerned. He said that "consumer response [to the Wii U] has been very positive," adding that the device's performance to this point is "quite comparable" to the Wii, indicating the Wii U could match what is one of the most popular consoles of all time.

In the end, Fils-Aime doesn't see the Wii U as a standalone piece of hardware, but as "a living, breathing" product that will continue to be improved over the comping years.

He isn't being cocky he is speaking the truth. Several forum posters are pulling this "power" card but how many will show up when they get their precious power?

Unless the others have some real system sellers (and they won't do for quite some time) they are going to sell at a slow and steady rate.

More power means higher prices. And not just the consoles. The games and DLC as well. It isn't ideal for consumers. Better graphics does not justify a £10 - £20 price increase on software.

if he doesint mean to sound cocky he sure isint doing a good job. SO he wants the competitors to come up with some sort of gimmicky thing to stand out. I dont want that. I just want more games and power to increase for better looking experiance and proboly more things that can be in the games cause of said power. I dont need a tablet or something els to enjoy my games.

You can still argue what he said is correct, since he didn't say a lie like "CoD runs at 1080p on our system compared to the rest". All he said is that "it looks better", and if you consider the removal of screen tearing and added AA to be graphical improvements (which the Wii U version has), then it will look better to you.

That's fine, but he's also throwing in a much broader audience. Nintendo has been playing in a much bigger ocean, and in that regard he's right. A high price tag is going to be the #1 thing people focus on. Horsepower or not. Early adopters are almost universally more seasoned gamers or sw level plebs. So his notion that they need to react to Nintendo is actually correct

A: They launched first, and so far will dictate the movement
B: The landscape and mentality for selling hardware is completely different because of the success of the Wii, the DS, and more recently the smart phones.
C:The WiiU has a gimmick going for it(innovations was Reggie's buzzword), as it stands just a straight up new console is going to come off as "yeah that's cool, but I can wait".

Wellp this just goes to show how out of touch Nintendo is with the core gamer base.

It is EXACTLY more power that people want out of their gaming consoles. Has he not taken notice of how people have continued to jump from gen to gen to new consoles whose main improvement over the previous ones was power?

God Reggie really is a moron....

Yeah, but he saw how even MORE people than that did that with the Wii, who did not have that has a selling point.

From this thread: www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/29322592/digital-foundry-black-ops-2-and-mass-effect-3-wiiu-vs-360-vs-ps3"The Wii U version matches the look of the Xbox 360 game and thus gives it an edge visually over the PlayStation 3 release, but unfortunately it comes up well short in terms of performance - an aspect that is all-important to the playability of a COD title. The frame-rate variance is such that the PS3 game feels generally smoother, while the 360 release feels like an entirely different game in the more demanding levels. Bearing in mind the commonalities in hardware design between Wii U and Xbox 360, we can't help but feel somewhat disappointed that Black Ops 2 under-performs so noticeably."

"Dramatically" is at best a stretch and at worst a lie. He does have a tough job defending this 'next gen' console so I can see why he needs to fudge on how things actaully are.

The Wii was a novelty that appealed to non-gamers than anything, not to mention ANYTHING Nintendo has a huge clan of drones mindlessly following it.

I want to ask the question to Reggie, why do PC gamers repeatedly dump money into their computers to upgrade them every so often? Hint: It's not because of some motion-control esque gimmick.

It has worse performance on the Wii U for sure, but the "it looks better" argument is still valid; especially since developers all the time choose to make their games only 30 fps instead of 60 just to have more detailed graphics.

Using a market has ridiculously niche and enthusiastic as the PC gaming market is a very bad analogy; because compared to the numbers Nintendo is used to, the entire PC gaming population (which I am a part off) added to their audience would end up being a small percentage of the total amount of people that bought their last home console Mario Kart game. Nintendo wants to go for the bigger pie, and those people don't even know the difference between an Xbox and an Xbox 360.

Exactly. Nice way to put it. :)

For some "hardcore" gamers this may not have been the meal of the day at least from that wording but for any random gamer faster gaming and pretty graphics may not be looked on as favorably compared to a gimmick like the game pad is. Oh and gimmick isn't necessairly a bad thing for ppl that might say something negative about it.

Overrall it wasn't exactly too cocky. He is just pointing that out since they are the forerunners this gen.

Yeah thats exactly what Im hoping the next PS shall be if Sony finally understands that doing what Nintendo does but later and worse doesnt cut it.

Kinectbox doesnt look too good considering how MS abandoned core gamers at the end of this gen.

There's no more room for hardware innovation, Nintendo.

As always, you are hilariously incorrect.

Aww, I'm so sorry that your opinion doesn't get in line with mine.

Your opinion is predicated on a false assumption and your own rather limited definition of what gaming is and should be. It doesn't matter that it is your opinion, it is still flat out inaccurate and incorrect.

No doubt Sony will. Sony's entire existance as a company the past few years has them labelled as a reactive company. They just see what other people are making and what people buy, and then they copy. Unfortunately for them, their copy jobs don't heed the success that the original had.

[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"][QUOTE="Heil68"]Fuk Reggie Fuk WiiU Fuk NintendoThe_Game21x

your b1tch ass couldn't put the "c" their heil? I am disappointed. Is this what you teach your children? They should just half ass it. Might as well start buying them kinect games.

> Corrects someone else on poor spelling

> Uses the wrong version of "there"

Gotta love it! :D

Also used b1tch, which is essentially the same thing as missing out the c with fuk to bypass the filter.

[QUOTE="Giancar"][QUOTE="Willy105"] You mean during the PS2. After the PS2 came the PS3, and they had to quickly adjust to play catch-up with both MS and Nintendo. AznbkdX

Due stupid management and cockiness. Reggie is seriously going there. As everybody has noted Nintendo PR are out of control since some time ago.

Welp they don't got much to lose at this point. The other systems haven't even shown their names yet. :P

While I feel this one isn't exactly boasting, if they are on other comments, then I just see it as good fun really. You deserve some leeway if you're out the gate first. Its always been this way.

The PR of a big world brand like Nintendo has always lots to lose, lots. But despite some BS PR they haven't done anything brand destroying. I'll give you that some competition bashing is always fun though :P

Welp that rig you got there is an attempt at innovation at its finest.

Don't see your issue. :P

I don't waste enough mindpower on idiots to get angry. I am just greatly amused at your expense, to put it charitably.
