So the demo was released last night, and all of us that were interested got to play it. What's your initial thoughts, and how would you compare it to the Penumbra series? Are you planning to buy the full game when it's released?

I personally found it fantastic. Creepy, unpredictable, gorgeous (artstyle wise), and damn fun. :D I personally like Penumbra: Black Plagues mental ayslum setting more, but Amnesia kept the same dark, macabre artstyle that made Penumbra such a surreal experience.

Day 1 purchase for me. :)

That loud noise that sounds like a flashbang hurt my ears a bit... maybe because i had it loud?

And this got 8.5 on IGN!

I didn't have any problems with the sounds. I was waiting for the motion blur to go away so I can see clearly. It didn't sadly, and it got worse when my sanity dropped into the red.

You can get the entire penumbra pack on their website, worth it if you haven't played them yet.

Oh and I forgot it's only $6 there.

This man speaks the truth, well worth it. Penumbra offered me some of the best gaming this generation. Really goes to show video games do not need action, action, action to be good. I recommend them as well. However I would skio out on the BP expansion "Requiem."

Yup. Although imo Overture loses steam about 3/4 the way through, Black Plague was an amazing experience. Playing hide n' seek with those wierd corpse monsters made my heart literally hurt.

Fantastic review. I felt a little uneased just by watching the video review. :P I love the "you don't know which way a door opens" mechanic. It's so simple, but that split second of fumbling around can cost you your life. I can't ****ing wait for this game. :D

The thing I like about this game is that that you feel the most fear when you mess up with something. The reason is the game knows you messed up and it will use this to its advantage. But with the insanity mechanic the game forces you to make quick decisions, then because of the speed you'll make a mistake and you'll be mentally punished for it.

What actually happens if your insanity meter gets too high? I ran into an apparition just to see what would happen and the dude kept breathing really heavy but didn't notice anything else.

To be perfectly honest, it's not survival horror in traditional console meaning of this word. It is adventure horror game that should appeal to survival horror fans, but people who go in expecting game like early Resident Evil are going to be pretty surprised because it's nothing like ot.

It was pretty damn cool, the effects, controls and gameplay were all very clever, they all just aim to create that atmosphere, and succeed. The water part was brilliant, and the game is one of the few I've ever found scary. I'm not gonna get it though since I'm not a fan of horror games.

Amnesia in my opinion is a true horror game. One that builds on both atmosphere and the fact that you're a defenceless person rather than what most horror games are nowadays where someone just turns off the lights and monsters jump at you going 'BOO!'

You hallucinate bugs crawling all over you, enemies become attracted to your whimpers and breathing and eventually you'll fall to the ground in terror and won't be able to move.

Survival Horror is hardly synonymous with Resident Evil.

Hence "console meaning". Survival horror always was described as horror focused action-adventure. Amnesia isn't action-adventure really, it's adventure game, different genre.

That's not what I meant. I meant that as long as the mechanism of survival is something "extra-ordinary," it can be survival horror. It doesn't have to have action to be survival horror. Hence games like Clock Tower and Haunting Ground.

Not really. Only very recently has survival horror turned into that on both PC and consoles, perhaps starting with RE4. So I don't understand how you came to this whole idea of it being 'traditional console definition'.

Pretty much. And it was only then that survival horror started losing ground on pretty much all platforms.

I think all gamers have a fair understanding of what survival horror truly is :)

When RE4 came out it was treated not only as the "greatest RE ever," but as a savior to Survival Horror gaming. It was pretty much blasphemy to even suggest that it was a different direction for the series. Then RE5 came out, more TPS games came out and the severe lack of anything survival horror in the market is increasingly apparent, especially when once capable devs are either doing other things or have gone MIA.

As for the decline of Survival Horror, I would mark that with this gen. There were still a number of great survival horror games after RE4, like Siren 2 (JP/EU only).

Welcome back?

I just enjoyed three pretty awesome survival horror games on the Wii earlier this year. :P

Fatal Frame 4 (Downloaded the english translation)
Cursed Mountain
Fragile Dream

Amnesia looks awesome though, I pre-ordered it some months ago for 10€.

FrozenLiquid

not really. console survival horror was always dominated by such games. Resident Evil and to lesser degree Silent Hill shaped the perception of what survival horror is, so many people are treating it as a genre. When you start to consider Survival horror as covering both RE and Amnesia it stops being a genre and becomes just a s.tyle same way as comedy is. I don't have problem with that, it's just that writing "Welcome back, Survival horror... we've missed you" gives off a false impression because Amnesia isn't typical survival horror.

I liked the demo, but it was just too much for me, having no means of defense was too scary for me. I may get it, but I may give up halfway through.
