PS4 Hits 43.5 Million Units Worldwide

3.5 Million units of PS4 were shipped between March and June worldwide this year, bringing the total sales of the PS4 up to 43.5 million units, and further solidifying the console's lead as the bestselling console of the generation.

The standings for this generation are at:

• Nintendo 3DS: 60 million units
• PlayStation 4: 43.5 million units
• Xbox One: 23 million units*
• Wii U: 13.5 million units
• PS Vita: 13 million units**

* Xbox One sales at the end of last year were estimated by various sources to stand at 19 million units. The new sales figure has been derived by dividing 19 million by 25 months, and then multiplying the quotient with 6.

** The PS Vita was at 12.5 million units last year. The assumption is it's managed to sell at least 500,000 units since.

43.5 mil Bores? I'm guessing that's a lot of buyers remorse right there. :P

LolVita, we have to guess its numbers since Sony is too ashamed to release them. If only Sony had supported their fans, Vita could have been special. Lets just hope God Eater will save it.

That's a lot of PS4's. It's amazing they still managed to get a growth this quarter. I mean, I know they had stuff like R&C and especially UC4 which likely boosted sales worldwide, but still.

Wonder how the NX, Xbox S, PSVR, Neo will impact the current HW market.

@charizard1605: Is it? Read elsewhere they managed to sell more consoles this quarter versus 2015. Though, to be honest, I didn't actually look at the numbers, just assumed people were reading them correctly.

Uh, the previous quarter would be January through March 2016, no? That's not the holiday quarter, that's the slowest quarter of the year actually.

Sales and operating revenue, and operating income are all down. Stockholders income down a lot also!

Good on Sony I guess. Though Ive been having much more fun with the systems that haven't been selling as well. PS4 is becoming by far my least used system this gen.

As a whole Sony had a bad start to the year. They are down in other areas of the business. This may have an impact on Playstation?

If Shareholders earn less and operating income is less that means you have less money to spend for the next quarter. I love how people ignore the other bits of the business. Do you think all this will have know impact?

FYI, in general QoQ comparisons don't really make sense, even less so for hardware in gaming industry. Nevertheless impressive that they did better YoY, and weird that they did worse QoQ. I always thought Q3 > Q1 > Q4 > Q2, but I might be wrong.

That would be my preconceived notion too, I would just change Q2 to be ahead of Q4, as September usually has some pretty big SW releases (which also push some HW). Though it doesn't really matter I suppose.

I'm just really surprised that their Q4 was somehow better than their newest Quarter (Q1).

Good for Sony I guess. It's just a shame, the X1 is a better console in almost every aspect, other than the marginal power advantage for PS4, and it's getting outsold by a big margain. Just goes to show, being more popular, does not automatically mean, it's better.

Mobile phone division was profitable :P

ps4 sold more this Q1FY16 it did Q1FY15..last year 3 million. this year 3.5 million

The mobile business had a sale decrease of 33.7% compared to the last quarter.

The division is so small now and the exchange rate to the yen favorable enough for this to be profitable. Hence the :P. Was being a silly.

I think that 3.5 million number is shipped numbers not sold to customers. Good news for Sony they seeing more digital sales in Q12016.

Don't disagree with that, but overall Sony is negative with the most important things for Shareholders. This may be the reason the PSN free games was crap this month. Sony has to pay a percentage to those studios when gamers download their games. AAA games likely means more money will need to be paid.

And they said console gaming was a thing of the past. This gen it clearly shows these consoles are here to stay!

At least the PC version served it's purpose, only because SFV offers Nude Mods and playing/seeing Chun-Li's naked body is golden.

Not really? We have know idea how many gamers who bought Playstation buy games every month. Sony has 21 million subscriptions so we know those people are likely online and buying games. The other 19+ million PS4 gamers we have know clue what their spending habits are like?

Sony is only making 9 to 15+ dollars profit from each PS4 sold. Hardware profits are meaningless for the most part.

Why would they they're not selling the PS4 at a loss. PS4 is still at 350 dollars and its almost 3+ years since launch. MS is struggling more with hardware because they selling the xbox one at a lower price sometimes 50 dollars or more.
