Well, what do you know.. Despite everyone trying to tell me that the PS3 is trailing 360 in sales, at the start of the year it was actually the other way around. I worked this out for my own gratification, but I thought I would share. I would like to see how it looks if I could get some more recent figures. Average sales per day since release: PS3 - 27,272 360 - 22,007 Well, how about that. the PS3 has sold on average 5,000 more consoles a day than the 360. Based on these figures. PS3 release date - 11/11/2006 360 release date - 22/11/2005 PS3 sales of 21.3 million by 31/12/2008 (781 days since release) 360 sales of 25 million by 01/01/2009 (1136 days since release) All these figures taken from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Console_wars#Worldwide_sales_figures_6-Malifor-You forgot to mention that the 360 had a WW launch, when the ps3 launched in Europe march 2007.
Those numbers would mean that the 360 has been killing the PS3 in sales lately... Current Sales figures-GeordiLaForge-Plugged the figures from your link (estimates only btw), into my spreadsheet and the PS3 was still over 3000 units a day ahead. closer, but still better. I would prefer to update it with factual numbers though.
The PS3 is behind the 360 in sales, so that's the bottomline, yes, even though the 360 had a year headstart with no competition.
However, it's true that fanboy's try to do doom and gloom reports every day here, that's for sure. The PS3 is in last place, but that doesn't mean it's not selling, it obviously is.

Yep, and delayed launch in Australia too.. So the gap should really be wider.
minus the headstart of 360 maybe PS3 doesnt that far behind from 360.. and considered the fact that 360 already has price cuts and bring in their games like halo.. maybe a price cut and bundle with GT5can turn the table around who knows..
From your wikipedia link:
Based on figures from GfK Chart-Track, as of 3 January 2009 (2009 -01-03)[update]:[26]
1. Wii - 4.9 million
2. Xbox 360 - 3.2 million
3. PlayStation 3 - 1.9 million
days since launch xbox- 1136, ps3- 781
xbox: 3,200,000/1136= 2816.9
ps3: 1,900,000/781= 2432.77
?
xbox has outsold ps3 on a average per day basis in europe? does this sound weird to anyone else?
EDIT 2: AHHH! those euro numbers are only for the UK! wikipedia is unreliable.
does wikis current worldwide numbers seem reliable to anyone? have we checked the sources for the worldwide numbers (ps3 21, xbox 25)?
don't worry i'll do your leg work......
the xbox number came from http://xbox.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/xbox-360-install-base-at-25-million-outsells-original/
it claims the INSTALLED BASE is over 25 million.
edit: this article also states that 7 million of those 25 million live in europe, which is way higher then the wiki euor number. all this is to proof the point that these numbers are all inaccurate and slanted, especially when yo compare shipped and sold through.
the ps3 number came from http://www.edge-online.com/news/sony%E2%80%AD-%E2%80%AC21%E2%80%AD-%E2%80%ACmillion-ps3%E2%80%AD%E2%80%ACs-sold-worldwide
this is an article where sony says they sold 21 million up to this point. THEY DID. i am under the impression that all three console manufacturers state SHIPPED numbers (hence, units SONY SOLD to retailers). shipped doesnt equal sold through to consumers (unless your nintendo, ms and sony can't say this)
sounds like a big pile of unreliable info.
did anyone really think the 360 would sell at a higher rate then ps3?.stylesPS3The last two years it has. That's why the gap between both has become wider since the PS3 launched.
[QUOTE="stylesPS3"]did anyone really think the 360 would sell at a higher rate then ps3?.IronBassThe last two years it has. that shows that people would rather have a system that cost $400 than the xbox that cost $199simslifer
Eh... since both have been in the market, the 360 has sold faster than the PS3.
makes absolutely no sense.stylesPS3When the PS3 launched the gap was 6 millions. The gap is now 8 millions. That means the 360 has sold faster than the PS3 since the PS3 launched.

considering we dont have the last 6 months of worldwide ps3 sales i dont know how your coming up with that. makes no sense.[QUOTE="stylesPS3"]makes absolutely no sense.IronBassWhen the PS3 launched the gap was 6 millions. The gap is now 8 millions. That means the 360 has sold faster than the PS3 since the PS3 launched. like i said before, we dont have a half year of ps3 sales during its greatest time so far, and this console has been out less then 3 years so 6 months is a big deal if were calculating rate.

do you have a linky for that 6 million ?
the gap was 8 million from PS3 launch..........
if it's 6 million that has to be the worst selling first year for a console in history.
like i said before, we dont have a half year of ps3 sales during its greatest time so far, and this console has been out less then 3 years so 6 months is a big deal if were calculating rate.stylesPS3
The 23 millions PS3 sold were reported April 2009.
That's two months ago.
do you have a linky for that 6 million ?
simslifer
Yes.
It was not a great first year.
Funnily enough, the 360 started selling better once the PS3 came out.
Fact is 360 is winning and winning well goodbye.TR800
the 360 came out a year before the ps3 ( & during christmas) the 360 is winning, but not bcuz of what you think.

ok your link says
Sony's 2008 results, in the fiscal-year ending March 31st 2009, show that the company sold 10.06 million PlayStation 3's for the year, up 10 per cent from a year earlier.
When adding fiscal-2007's numbers (9.12 million) and fiscal-2006 launch sales (3.61 million), the PlayStation 3 is closing in on 23 million units sold (shipped) worldwide, which it is expected to surpass when April 2009 sales are included.
and the xbox is averaging less then around 8 million a year so i dont see how its selling faster?

It was on their fiscal year report. Fiscal year that ended March 31.

The gap when the PS3 launched was 6 million. Now it is round 8 million. It means that since both are on the market, the 360 has sold around two million units more. Meaning the 360 has sold faster since both have been on the market.

They say forget about that first year to 1.5 year launch.... to them all that maters is right now so they can declare their box the winner. When in all honesty the ps3 has had more growth and has done better with the price it has. Once the price is dropped we will see a flood of new users...but that can be a bad thing for us too as then we have to deal with all the lemmings who buy them and you know what xbox live sounds like online....ewwww 13 year olds cursing ftl!

everyone knows the biggest sales come at launch.stylesPS3That's not true. The Xbox, PS3 and the Ps2 also showed year-by-year sales increments. Price drops usually help (among other thinks, like big hitters, bundles, etc). For whatever reason, one thing is clear: the PS3 is not catching up.

For whatever reason, one thing is clear: the PS3 is not catching up. at this overall rate which is almost 3 million a year difference, it will only take about 2 years to catch up. but when price drop, the new games, and everything else go on full throttle, i expect it to increase to even more so the ps3 will pass the 360 in a years time just like the wii did.
at this overall rate stylesPS3At this current rate the 360 will outsell the PS3 even more. Remember, it has been proven the 360 is currently (and has been for the last two years) selling faster.

selective reasoning ftl.stylesPS3What's so "selective" about it? Since the PS3 launched, the gap has increased. That's the rate. The gap is getting bigger. At "this rate" that gap will further increase.

I find funny how you think that, despite the gap getting bigger every year, "at this rate" the PS3 will outsell the 360 :?
ok then lets do it your way, lets exclude the first year. 360 sold 7.2 million consoles its first year, so subtract that from 30 mill, leaves us with 22.8 and, the ps3 has sold more.[QUOTE="stylesPS3"] find it funny how some people say doesnt matter that 360 was out a year before the sales should count, but then when calculating rate, they decide to exclude that year. only this place.IronBass

and in case you still think 360 is selling at a better rate, here is a visual for you to maybe understand. A Graph - and you can change it to graph any number of weeks you desire. notice how 360 and ps3 are the same at the start, then all of a sudden the ps3 jumps above it (in case you dont understand it shows the wii too so jumping above it means Higher Rate.) then see the last little bit the 360 reaches the same level for barely 1/4 of the whole time ps3 was above it. but nowhere on the graph do i see 360 higher then ps3. check it out http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.phpPlease Log In to post.
