Phil Spencer Confirms that TR is only a Timed Exclusive

Here is an interview done with him later last night and published today:

So their timed exclusive will fool the kids and their "Ms owns cod because of commercials" crowd, but most won't be fooled. This was a stupid move by ms.. Why they keep trying to force TR on to the xbox crowd who obviously doesnt' care for the series that much (when PS and PC outsell ever TR game over xbox sometimes 2-1 it becomes ridiculous...MS needs to stop trying to force TR to xbox fans and give them another gory gears game or a space marine game as that is what they love.)

"When people want me to say, can you tell us when or if it's coming to other platforms, it's not my job," dSpencer told Eurogamer. "My job is not to talk about games I don't own. I have a certain relationship on this version of Tomb Raider, which we announced, and I feel really good about our long term relationship with Crystal and Square.

"I get the reaction I see. If I'm a PlayStation person all of a sudden I feel like, the franchise has gone. I didn't buy the IP. I didn't buy the studio. It's not mine. Where this thing will go over time, just like Dead Rising or Ryse, we'll see what happens with the game. I don't own every iteration of Tomb Raider.

"I don't own them building Tomb Raider on other platforms. I can't talk about the franchise that way. I can talk about the deal I have."

So, what, exactly, is that deal?

"I have Tomb Raider shipping next holiday exclusively on Xbox. It is Xbox 360 and Xbox One. I'm not trying to fake anybody out in terms of where this thing is. What they do with the franchise in the long run is not mine. I don't control it. So all I can talk about is the deal I have. I don't know where else Tomb Raider goes."

Is there a time limit on the exclusivity period?

"Yes, the deal has a duration. I didn't buy it. I don't own the franchise."

Can you tell us how long the duration is?

"No. It's not because I'm trying to be a headfake on anybody. It's a deal between us and the partner. People ask me how much did we pay. There are certain things I'm just not going to talk about because it's a business deal between us and them. Obviously the deal does have a duration. I didn't buy the IP in perpetuity."

Is this old news or something? I didn't see any threads on this and I still see people saying it's not confirmed to be timed...yet no here commenting on this? Bizarre. Also hate the way Phil Spencer talks like he "owns" things personally. Why not use the word "We" instead?

Yep, I figured it was. Just like Hellblade or No Man's Sky on PS4.

Oh, so just like every other third party MS "exclusive".....

It's been pretty widely posted on the dozen+ TR threads already going, but you're right that we had no thread on it.

I think Spencer is to be commended for stepping up and being (pretty much) honest about the deal once the criticism starting coming in. It beats the hell out of Greenberg trying to straight up lie about it.

Moving forward I think this incident marks a turning point of sorts for the major platform owners. Each will look at this and modify either their tactics moving forward, or at least the way they attempt to frame such deals. They'll have to, because this incident will be front and center of every journalist's mind when they hear about a third party "exclusive" from now on. No one is going to get to pretend they have an exclusive anymore without straight out lying, so that's going to affect the value of these deals from the get go. If we're really lucky they realize this isn't worth the money and the headache, and shift resources toward actually making games for their customers.

Once again MS is kind of getting the shaft by taking the public beating while Sony and Nintendo sneak off the stage, but in the end I think all gamers will benefit to some extent.

So basically all of the bitching, jimmy rustling and butt hurt was all for nothing. Awesome. So eventually the babies will get their Tomb Raider after all.

I noticed most of these same people were ok when they stupidly thought that GTA V was going to be console exclusive but god forbid they get "deprived" of something.

All exclusive IP's have time periods in which a company must "re-new" it's exclusive rights. If they do not re-new then the IP can be used else where.. this is common practice in a lot of day to day business outside of video games. I work in an industry that is closely related to the video game industry, to be a little more specific, in the finance department of a pretty large marking publisher. We have to be careful when doing the marketing for any products and exclusive rights is 90% of the reason. I see this every single day and you cows need to simmer down.

All he said was that yes there is a time restraint on this deal, if they want they can re-new said deal and continue Tomb Raider being exclusive to xbox. This does not mean it's for sure coming out on PS4.. That also means it could still come out for PS4. I guaranteed only Tier 1 launch of the game a Tier 2 launch are exclusive. Typical of these kind of deals.

I think this was understood. Doesn't mean it will go to ps4 necessarily either. If it does it may be in 2016, 2017 or whenever at which point would it matter?
