All these system wars and PC vs Mac is rarely mentioned. I personaly think PC's are better, heres a couple of obvious reasons in no perticular order...

1. Library of Games

2. Customization

3. Power

4. Cost

5. Support

What do you think is the best, and why do you think it.

Macs have traditionally been used for graphic design or general home use rather than gaming, so really the comparison isn't really fair. As Steam takes off on the Mac, there might be a resultant increase in capabilities, but right now your "average" Mac is more limited.

If you want games, the PC will win. Price, shear brute force GPU power and library size do that alone. But if you want to pretty much avoid viruses altogether (or work in DTP/Art & design fields), you get a Mac.

Well the PC is clearly going to win this one. Its not compared because there is no use in comparing. That being said I am a Macbook Pro owner and there are features of it that one has to love. I think the one big plus of the Mac's are convenience and durability. It runs like a dream, it never crashes or slows down and I never have to carry my battery charger around.

--

Also TF2 runs maxed out and Starcraft 2 is said to run on high (will test this for myself soon enough), so its all good...

There doesn't need to be a show down here. PC will win anything that relates to gaming. Macs were never built for gaming. Only now that Steam is out are Mac owners getting top titles at the same time as PC owners.

I've always preferred Mac, but because of their stability and interface, not for gaming. Having Steam now and the access to games like Portal and Half-Life are just a bonus.

Nowadays Mac is nothing but yet another brand of PC, not any different really from Dell or HP.

So the question is really:

Apple hardware vs other vendors

OSX vs Windows.

And it depends on preferences. I personaly find both PC hardware and Windows to be far more suited for what I do the Apple OSX, others might feel differently based on their needs

since Macs are a subset of PC i will assume you mean Windows PC vs Mac PC. I prefer Windows PCs because I can choose all the hardware that goes in as well as having a much larger selection of looks and accessories. Library of Games of obvious and so is most of the other choices. the only thing that is really debatable is support. but that will vary depending on the company doing the support. Macs would generally only have 1 while many will support PC but with different levels of quality. one thing i noticed is that issues on windows are up on many different websites very quickly. I've found it harder to find solutions to obscure issues on Macs.

Windows for gaming, yes. Also for price if you buy stuff not from Microsoft, as the majority of the hardware and software they create is a horrendus. Other than that Mac OS wins easily.

Exactly this. For some reason there are a few people who have recently fallen under the impression that Macs aren't personal computers.

Exactly, you can run any PC game on a Mac by running Windows on it...it's just a seriously overpriced method of doing so. Found this video showing Crysis running fine on a Mac. However it doesn't change the fact that Macs are massively overpriced for what they are...but so is every product by Apple it seems.

On a consumer level an Apple machine has no advantages at all. Honestly a PC and a Mac are almost identical now. This is why its so easy to get windows running on a Mac or OSX on a PC.

For the overall user experience I prefer Mac. I'm a graphic designer, so that sways my decision quite a bit. I do own a PC for gaming purposes though.

Why I think the Mac is better for graphic design:

1. It's better with large files and folders containing a lot of large files, especially the ones I deal with--I regularly deal with 1.5GB Photoshop files. That's not a typo--a gig and a half for ONE file, and sometimes I have a folder with 20 copies of that file in it. This much traffic will choke any PC I have ever seen. The Mac just whips right through it.

2. A lot of programs on the PC--CorelDraw comes to mind quickly--keep all their data internally as RGB and convert to CMYK when you print. That's an okay workflow fifteen years ago, when everything was sent to imagesetters separated. Nowadays, all workflows are composite and if you dump an RGB file into a composite workflow the colors will come out really strange. I did an experiment with my workflow--I took two copies of a file, converted one to RGB and one to CMYK, and ran them side-by-side on cheap vinyl. You'd have sworn they were completely different files.

3. It's easier to rename a file in the Mac Finder than it is in the Windows Explorer. It sounds petty, but when you've got 500 files in a job and they've all got weird names, being able to rename them quickly is a godsend. On a Mac I can hit down-arrow, press Return and type in the filename I want. If I press down-arrow and hit Return on a PC, the file opens.

4. Only the best software finds its way to the Mac. I was in an electronics store one day and looked at the "graphics" software. They had six different greeting card programs, nine different fake page layout programs, a whole slew of digital camera photo editors... Right now you're saying, so what? Well, the "so what" is that there are freelancers out there attempting to make a living with this garbage. They'll get a job that should be set in something real, like InDesign, and attempt to set the thing in MyPageCreator or whatever. Then they dump the files it creates on production and tell them, "here you are, you make it work." And you've got your boss, and HIS boss, and the person who's paying for you to print the magazine, drumming their fingers on the lid of your half-million-dollar platesetter which isn't running because every time you send a MyPageCreator file to print it crashes the whole machine. And you can't get it out into something like Illustrator because the one time you tried it, it managed to shove ALL the type on the page into a column one letter wide. Yes, I'm production-centric here but the point is clear: you can't select the wrong tools if you run a Mac because they don't make them for the Mac. There are advantages to not having quite as wide a selection of software.

5. Macs handle type better.

6. It's easier to find graphics-specific tech support if you've got a Mac. It is EXTREMELY rare to find a Windows IT guy who knows anything about this very complex software. If you find someone who really knows graphics, he's probably running a Mac.

7. Macs produce cleaner PostScript than Windows machines do. All high-end graphics output devices run the PostScript page description language. Windows PostScript can totally hang a RIP; Mac PostScript runs much more cleanly.

Edited previous post. It's long. Enjoy the read if you actually want to read it. Like I said, I use a PC for gaming, and Macs for work. I refuse to be a fanboy for either, because they both have strengths and weaknesses. I despise fanboys, like the post above me, for example.

I'm not sure if you worded that right, because it just sounds weird. On PC you don't need to do this much, you just hit F2 and type the new name. Done.
