Palworld (Pokemon but with weapons) coming to Game Pass very soon!

Glad to see it's out of Early Access as this has been on my Steam radar for months:

Has GameFreak finally met their match in terms of visual scale? I do like the concept of the creatures & the trainers using guns has me more intrigued. Glad to hear its coming to Game Pass as this will get me to resub for the PC version. (If it turns out great, I'll buy it on Steam)

@davillain: It's coming out of early access now? It will be interesting to see if Pokémon fans like it or bounce off.

It looks like a parody game so maybe it won't have the same charm, and it looks like it won't have a family friendly vibe because of the guns and forced labor jokes.

This game looks really good. I have Game Pass but will throw them some cash instead.

I don't expect Pokemon fans to jump ship on Palworld as it has lots to prove. I do like the concept but we've seen more Poke rip-off games for years, I'll be surprised if Palworld becomes a hit.

Hmm interesting. I had a look at the steam page too. It looks like a parody of pokemon. My biggest concern though is it may be taking on too much. Farming, Building, Pokemon etc...it could end up just doing all of them poorly.

I have added to my wishlist but I don't generally buy early access games. I'll get it when it's finished if the devs pull it off. Could be a cracker on the ol Deck especially.

The character designs look a bit too similar to Pokemon... I'm surprised Nintendo haven't already sued.

Hard to say if Nintendo can actually sued Palworld. I guess it depends how far the line goes on the similarities. And while Monster catchers are not necessarily Pokemon rip-offs, (and most are not) the designs of the Pocket Monsters here give away the intent.

@davillain: Nintendo would normally send a cease & desist... This is very unusual behaviour for Nintendo.

It's releasing on Xbox Gamepass as well or just PC? I'd like to try it, but this isn't the type of game I'd like to play on PC.

I like the art style. The battle animations look great too! I might as well try it.

I've been playing temtem on xbox, it's a good Pokémon knockoff, better than the new Pokémon games.

Palworld monsters would fall under derivative work. Which is not an infringement. It doesn't mean Nintendo can't try (you can try to sue for anything) but they will be wasting their time.

I'll be honest and say I don't get the appeal of this game. I've never play a Pokemon game and thought "man, this would be so much better with guns!" It's like an edgy 14 year old made this game or something.

Pedro is right. And this isn’t the first time PocketPair has ripped off a Nintendo game. They released Craftopia in 2020 and that game is a blatant BotW clone with survival mechanics tacked on. Palworld still feels a lot like BotW to me. But if PocketPair didn’t get into any legal trouble back then, there’s no reason for them to expect any legal action now.

A game can't be sued for ripping-off gameplay mechanics. But a game can be sued for ripping-off artwork. Craftopia ripped-off BOTW's gameplay mechanics, but didn't rip-off the character designs. In contrast, Palworld rips-off the Pokemon character designs, which is pushing the boundaries of copyright law. Whether or not it qualifies as copyright infringement, it's very unlike Nintendo to not send a cease & desist like they have done against so many other creators in the past.

However, copyright laws vary significantly between countries. Since the developer is from Japan, it could be the case that Japanese copyright law isn't as strict, or that Nintendo of Japan isn't as strict with copyright enforcement like Nintendo of America.

@Jag85: Oh, Craftopia absolutely stole character designs from BotW. There‘s Bokoblins in the game. Well what looks exactly like them…
