The 360 is selling better in Japan recently for the same reason the PS3 is selling better in the US and Europe recently; most likely, the majority who bought 360's already owned a PS3 or a Wii. The early adopter phase is more or less over and the future of the PS3 in Japan most likely depends on when and how Nintendo decides to release the WiiWii, or whatever they choose to call it. If it's not a grand improvement, then the PS3 will be a cheap alternative by that time, like the Wii is to the PS3 now. If it is a grand improvement, it's tough to say, but Nintendo may end up winning the region yet again. Let's also not forget that most internet delivery services don't offer full HD movies, while Blu Ray does (and allows you to build a permanent collection). As HD catches on in Japan, the PS3 will probably begin to catch up on that basis alone (in addition, perhaps, to the PS4, which would hopefully use BluRay with a higher read speed). Meanwhile, Sony likely has the power in the Blu Ray coalition to make the medium prohibitively expensive for Microsoft or Nintendo to use, rendering them somewhat impotent as all-in-one media consoles, which is Microsoft's MO and Nintendo may need to begin making moves toward if it hopes to keep up.
As for the immediate success of the console, Sony has made some bold promises regarding RPG's at the Tokyo Game Show this year. If they follow through on that (Dark Cloud 3? Tales of Vesperia PS3? Star Ocean 4 PS3? The third seems beyond likely based on comments by Microsoft and Square), then you can more or less say goodbye to the 360 in Japan and Microsoft's love affair with Namco Bandai.
Only time will tell, but I find it hard to deny the PS3 is the best console IF you have the money.
