We all know PC is "where its at for gaming", but the industry is waking up to that as well. Recently the Nvidia VP said: "Our advantage as developers is we know what is coming," he said. "And what is coming is far ahead of the console. You will see a huge difference between what you can get on a PC and a console." HP is releasing a new line of gaming PCs saying: "I believe the days of the console are numbered," And really when you think of it why would someone buy a new console? Put that money towards a PC and have versatility AND the best set of games. Coupled with the fact that PC digital sales provide the developers with dramatically more profit than selling on consoles (physical vs digital and MS/Sony fees vs no fees) I think you will see developers really push for PC in the coming years (BF3 being an initial sign of the change).

Sure and the console developers know that as well, hence the push for: motion controls casual games party games Serious gaming is migrating to PC almost exclusively.

^ That. But if they kept/ added a good variety I wouldn't care then. Lulz. Don't think Nintendo is going anywhere if Wii U is as successful in sales as the original Wii.

Consoles will always be the bigger gaming market, they just go through cycles of stagnation until a new console is released, rinse and repeat. I think more people prefer easy to get into, usually social gaming sitting on a couch with the big screen.

I think the Nvidia quote about sums up a response to this. Consoles will be relegated to motion control games, we saw it at E3 this year, and with the success of the Wii investors have a reinforced concept that consoles are for casual motion control games.

PS3 released at $500 - today a $500 PC will drop kick both consoles into Oblivion. (or Skyrim)

'ease of use' uhh, plug in, turn it on, driver update(almost exclusively video driver), install a game, it's the same difficulty...

That information is currently under wraps - they are moving towards pre-built affordable PC gaming machines, much like Dell with their Alienware laptops (except these will be desktops, and dramatically cheaper than a gaming laptop). The details are unknown at this point - however the trend says a lot.

Until desktop and laptops PCs from the likes of HP, Dell, Gateway, Compaq, etc ship with the capability to play games within the current gen of games they release in, then I would say consoles are going nowhere.

With all due respect to HP and Nvidia. I cannot stand when people or coporations make claims with no evidence or logic to support it.

More logic than "PC is vastly superior to consoles"? I think they are waking up to a new market (and tons of $$) in Steam/DD sales, combined with the "casualization" of the current gen they are predicting (rightly IMO) that people will start moving to PC.

That phrase is true to an extent. The majority of PCs cannot run Call of Duty though. So again... until mass market PC ship with the capability to play real games, then their words hold no real meaning.

I hope that is the case. Console makers got lazy this gen and should have released new systems last year. It's the reason I gave up on them and went back to PC gaming.

My point is that comparing 7 years old console prices is illogical, it should be compared to the price at release for a fair estimation of "you get what you pay for". If you want to pay $200 for a newly released console you aren't going to get much ... same with PC. There is a reason the current gen consoles are so cheap; the parts are old.

As soon as I can get a PC that can play great games, with great graphics, while playing Blu Ray movies, all from the comfort of my recliner for $299, then I'm all for PC's completely replacing consoles.

They might be right. If new consoles come out a few years from now and they pack them with high end hardware... The hardware might be good enough to the point where gamers dont actually want improved hardware beyond that point... or at least i expect the gen to last well over 10 years... and the next step will probably be cloud gaming or something that wouldnt require new hardware.

from the responses on this board it is clear to see that Nvidia and HP are clearly out of touch with what consumers want, there will always be a market for consoles because of several major factors 1)people who don't want the complication of worrying whether a game will actually run on there machine 2)people who cannot afford a gaming rig 3)children who, as somebody already stated, are too young to operate a PC (installing games, tweaking graphics options, etc, etc) 4)people who like set hardware and don't want to keep forking out money on new graphics cards, Ram, motherboards, etc, etc

Nividia/HP can talk all they want about how amazing and awesome PCs are. And frankly, sure, they have a point. But the FACT is that the awesomeness and power of PCs is nothing new and hasn't helped stop or slow the console business one bit. And it also doesn't change the fact that a lot of developers are only now focusing more and more on console gaming instead of PC, like they may have previously.

So in short, people still primarily support console gaming and developers are supporting consoles more now that ever...and Nvidia sees that as a sign of consoles dying? Based on what? The fact they are making really cool things that they want to sell us and have a stake in downplaying consoles?

PCs will always have a place in the gaming world. And sure, maybe one day they will once again be the primary gaming rig in people's homes. But I don't see that happening any time soon. Certainly not next gen.

thats not what he's saying, at the time the PS3 ACTUALLY released you couldn't get the PC you are talking about for for 500 dollar, you can't compare console prices from 5 years ago with the price of a PC now, it's not a fair comparison, and at the end of the day 200 dollars is still significantly cheaper than 500 dollars

can you blame them, nither MS or SONY actually got a good deal out of them as far as Nvidia GPU's are concerned, ATI on the other hand have proved to be a very good deal as far as GPU's for consoles are concerned

Nvidia's just upset that Ati got the console deals. Nintendo is confirmed to use ATI and the next xbox will most likely use ATI as well.

Oh yeah, and you can't rent games for PC...which is another advantage consoles have. Sorry, some games aren't worth $60. Some are a weekend rental and that's it. Gamefly can't exist for PC's. I can't lend a friend a game, or borrow one. I can't sell my old PC games and buy new ones with the money.

Maybe that's why piracy is rampant on the PC?

I believe Direct2Drive has a rental service for PC game now. Advantage lost.

Gamefly sucks anyway. My postal service lost 3 games in the mail and I was held responsible.

Good thing there aren't any 60$ pc games if you use DD :P, 33-48 tops. And you can always wait 'til big steam sale if you don't want to pay that much when the games a bit older.. better to own a game for nearly nothing than just rent it.

Piracy is More rampent, 'cause it's just easier..

Yes, because as soon as it costs too much to develop anything for consoles, developers will flood to the PC to develop games with even higher requirements.

HP is doing exactly that.

HP you say, eh?

If their reliability is as good as their inkjet printers and laptops, it will make Microsoft RROD syndrome look like high quality manufacturing standards.

Seriously, I went through 3 of their printers before I decided "enough was enough". They're all junk - barely lasted a year each with just moderate use - the 1st two I bough were admittedly cheap models, but the 3rd time I went with a high rated and more expensive model hoping for a better experience. It still crapped out on me. Moved over to Canon and have had no problem for 4 years. Then a few years later I gave them a chance on a laptop, it lasted 18 months before the motherboard/VGA chip basically melted itself due to faulty heatsink design. Before the HP, my Dell laptop lasted 7 years - but i've heard Dell's took a dive in quality which is why I went with HP this last time. LOL that was a mkstake, never again HP.

Computers are hard to use?

that's no joke, they really can be hard to use for some people, my wife for example finds it very hard to do anything with a PC outside of facebook, and trust me, she has really tried, i have tried to show her how to many things with a PC but she really struggles with it, not everyone is so technically minded.

Yeah...I guess that's the same...except renting a game from blockbuster takes what...20 minutes round trip? Then I'm playing within 20 minutes or so after an install and possible updates. Meanwhile, the savy PC gamer who decided to "rent" a PC game from this supposed DD site has to wait several hours for the 5-7gb download, then install it, then update. Then the PC gamer has to fiddle with all their settings to make sure everything runs right. Then they may have to update their video card driver because of some issue with the game. Etc, etc, etc.

Sorry, consoles are very more convinient and easy to use. Just like consoles will always be inferior to PC's on the technical level...PC's will always lag way behind in the ease of use department.
