please post one of your reasons, this is mine

Nintendo is insane. They have a console that is hugely popular, and it could be so much more popular if they would just stop being babies and add complete online support for every game!

According to Ben Herman (President of SNK) during an interview with Nintendowiifanboy:

Of course, there has to be bad news, and it’s kind of big: Herman says that Nintendo is not letting publishers add online functionality to games, VC or retail, and probably will continue this restriction throughout 2007.

Now, don’t go crazy loyal reader, that doesn’t mean that Super Smash Brothers will not have online play. This is concerning 3rd party publishers, so anything Nintendo made will have online support, but even that is sketchy because Nintendo still isn’t embracing online gaming as much as the other consoles.

Nintendo, if you are reading I got a bone to pick with you, stop with this nonsense already! Stop making believe that we live in a plastic bubble world where we have all of our friends living a block or two away from where we live. As we grow up, friends/family move on and the only thing that brings us together is video games (and weddings sometimes). Just stop being so hard headed and release your online information to 3rd party publishers and embrace online gaming, because the sooner you do, the more widely successful the Wii will be. I would much rather trade Wii’s Opera web browser, which has been the subject of many news articles as being a “porn magnet” for children, for online play! Your embracing everything online with Everybody Votes, sending messages, sending Miis, etc. but your forgetting the most important part of having an online community… and that’s playing with one another!

I imagine the reason why 3rd parties aren't going to be touching online for the Wii till after 2007 is because Nintendo hasn't even fully tested their own network yet.  Smash Brothers is supposed to be the guinee pig for that.

The DS is a good indication but we still can't gage it well. Consider FF:CC having online functionality. It would seriously make me look the other way. If any game NEEDS to be online it's this one. I can imagine Blazing Angels being a blast online too.

Are you suggesting that this news goes into correlation that Nintendo actually want to slowdown sales? That'll be a first. It might help them. :P

When some people notice the HUGE HUGE difference in the way PS3 and 360 games look compared to the Wii.

And when more people get HDTVs they will want an HD game console to go with it.

When the BIG games come out on 360/PS3 that cannot be resisted.

When PS3 and/or 360 get a price drop.

When people realize that PS3 has a motion sensor in it's controller as well.

While I think the thread starter has a perfectly valid point, the vast majority of gamers still don't care about online gaming all that much.  It only seems popular with the Xbox, and even then I have to wonder if online gamers are just buying the Xbox as opposed to new gamers moving online.

Because of that, I don't think any potential Wii slowdown will be a result of the lack of online.

Don't hold your breath on the way the systems look making a huge difference. Practically everywhere you buy a system people can notice the difference among all the systems. The PS3 display at Target looks fantastic. All the Wii display is some women chatting about Nintendo and the footage of Wii Sports looks worse than it actually does. 360's usually have madden. All blow away Wii. Customers can't miss these displays, yet they still buy Wii. Maybe when more people get HDTV's, things might change. However, if a recession starts, PS3 and 360 are at a disadvantage compared to Wii,which could also slow things down.

The Wiimote senses a lot more than motion, and appeals to a crowd that doesn't care about the big games. It (unfortunately, IMO) will sell the most units without question. I am afraid that with the Wii's massive success, it will result in the watering down of games as a whole, but I hope I am wrong.

I think there is a real possibility of that happening in the US too I believe, last time I checked. Anyway those displays do a lot to show the difference between the systems I agree and that hasn't hurt the Nintendo Wii. If anything it actually helps since the Wii display gives an actual break down of the system, it's benefits. It isn't in your face or hurried either. I keep saying that the PS3, not so much the 360 i think, need something like this in stores to explain why it cost so damn much. Still even that might not help it since it just so much more expensive compared to the other systems.

I don't know, I sort of think he is right. The Wii is a party machine. I see more nongamers buying a Wii than I see my friends who play games. And I think that that crowd of people who aren't really into gaming as a whole, and just love the Wii, don't care about online gaming. People are going crazy over this thing. I don't know why, but they are. And it shows in the sales. The demand is very very high, and I don't really see it slowing down for a while.

while i'd be very displeased if they didn't have online for 3rd party this year. I'm pretty sure that it will have little effect on wii sales. ppl are not buying the wii for it's online abilities. there are no online games in most areas for the wii right now and it's been selling out.

A handheld is completey different from a system and it wasn't like the DS was great it was because the PSP basically sucked and had little support.

The PS3 has a ton of support comming its way and doesn't suffer from decade time taking load times.

The Wii having little third party support is a drastic reason and probably the most important. Secondly while it will just be reaching Xbox graphic level PS3 and 360 will be reaching levels far beyond Gears of War and games will have even more impressive features. It will be a gradual and slow demise of Wii's graphics to the comparison of PS3 and 360's graphics as the systems power difference will continue to grow father apart. Meaning casuals will have to look at what PS3 and 360 have to offer. Third two words. PSN and Live. Combined with third party multiplayer games PSN and Live will be the future of gamming. Fourth is the price cuts more so 360 then PS3. With all the systems cheaper people who bought Wii only because it was within their price range will also buy a 360 or a PS3. Lastly, the kiddie appeal. It didn't work last gen and won't work this gen so why is Nintendo being so ignorant and why won't they shake their image? All jokes aside its because of their tradition thats why. Learn to use paragraphs, it makes picking apart your argument much easier.

Firstly to suggest the situation for Wii and DS is different is completely unfounded, the two are intrinsically linked by the same philosophy. In essence the Wii is but an extension of the DS, the Wii Remote an elaborate stylus.

The Wii is in the same position regarding its console counterparts as the DS is with the PSP. The 360 and PS3 mimic the philosophy of the PSP, more advanced specifications, multi-media features and so forth. Also the position of the DS graphically is similar to that of the Wii, noticeabely less advanced then its competitors. The DS and Wii prove that graphics have all but reached their zenith in terms of appeal, both consoles are a pre-emptive strike to a pending collapse of the tradition conventions of the gaming industry. I assure you, in the next 3 generations no developer will be espousing the ideals of graphical grunt.

Also you refer the Wiis third-party support as lacking, once again I feign to see this notion playing out in the real world. The Wii is attracting support from all echelons, be it big hitters like EA who are thrusting resources at the Wii or smaller studies like Nibris who provide an alternative outlet of innovation. You also cite the online service as a point of import, let me ask how long did it take for the number of online DS users to reach say 10,000? I can hazard a  guess that it was faster than X-Box Live. If the Wii follows the same user-friendly template for Wi-fi gaming then I am sure this will be reciprocated.

Finally you see the broad audience (or 'kiddie' as you term it) of Nintendo a hindrance. I'm sure those millions playing Brain Training, Wii Sports or Nintendogs beg to differ. The family friendly virtues of Nintendo were in no way responsible for the lack-lustre sales of the Gamecube, on the contrary, Nintendo failed to differentiate their console from the competitors leaving us with a three horse race between three identical horses. It would not matter which had the most 'mature' games, it was the quantity of games that set the PS2 as the market leader.

Yes, to totally discount DS/WIi comparison is a mistake. What DS proved is that a system being more accessible to a larger audience, even though it doesnt have the best 'graphics', you can have a dominant system. The simliarties of the DS and Wii success compared to the PS3/PSP struggle are there. DS is cheap like the Wii. DS has a brand new way to play like the Wii DS reaches a whole new audience llke the WIi. Not only that, its reasonable to think that people that enjoy the DS might very well purchase a Wii (being people that have never purchased a console before). PSP blows away DS in graphics, screensize, resolution, and multimedia functionality. But its beyond many peoples price range and people dont care about the extra functionality and new movie format it uses.

The hardware is the same but the competition is completely different. Sony is a rookie when it came to handheld devices and their was little support on the PSP part. The feauteres of the PSP wasn't  back efficiently. Now when it comes to Wii and Playstation 3 its switched. Wii has no third party support only first party , and PS3 has tons of third party support and backing their console's features. *cough* Blue ray. The Ds and PSP wasn't that graphically apart. The PS3 and Wii are have a drastic power difference. Drastic.

Ok. Give me 3 potential AAA third party title games that are comming out to the Wii 07. The last list was No More heroes, Resident Evil and SSX Blur. You keep referencing to the DS and fail to understand that the market is casual gamer dominated or we can at least agree that their are alot more hardcore gamers on consoles then handheld. I know 6 people who own a DS. 4 are my little cousins and 1 is my little sister's friend and one was a friend who returned his to save up money for a 360. Again unlike the PSP the PS3 has an extreme power advantage, more features and they are backed. The last time I checked sony isn't exactly a rookie when it comes to this type of market. The PSP killed itself. How do I know? Because I owned one and ended up returning it.
But then again I didn't like the DS much either.

GC failed because it couldn't shake its kiddie image and had way too little third party support. The only reason why Wii is selling is because of its price compared to other systems.

Wether Im wrong or your wrong. Thankyou for presenting an actual arguement. Believe it or not the most responses on this thread is your fail. PS3 sux!

I imagine the reason why 3rd parties aren't going to be touching online for the Wii till after 2007 is because Nintendo hasn't even fully tested their own network yet.  Smash Brothers is supposed to be the guinee pig for that.  RahnAetas

Teh hell are you talking about? The Wii online is pretty much a replica of DS online and we all know how great that runs. Methinks Nintendo has perfected a simplistic online service right out of the gate. Sure it aint fancy but WiiConnect24 works flawlessly for me, both web browsing and downloading Virtual Console games. I would imagine implimenting online gameplay will not be that difficult, seeing as how WFC for the DS is flawless and works great. The friend code thing sucks but meh, its only one small thing.

PSP sucked? Just because the DS is completely destroying it, doesn't make it a bad handheld.

Face it the DS is a marble of gaming technology. It has a microphone, Dual Screen, Touch Screen, great online wireless mode and just great fun. The PSP is what the PS3 is, all the extra functions have almost nothing to do with gaming. The only thing stopping the wii from total domination is the 360.

Didn't the first Online game for the DS take about a year? Also Reggie already said the Dev kits for online have been sent out, the games are probably being held back until after Nintendo launches its own online games, probably Pokemon and then maybe Smash and corruption. In addition if you look at it, Wii is selling without online now, so why implement it until you need it, better to keep the online games back until the demand starts to slow

NIN makes alote of money on selling games. That's why they dont let the 3rd party make online games.

They want the online market for themselves becuase they are greedy´.

Rip870

When some people notice the HUGE HUGE difference in the way PS3 and 360 games look compared to the Wii.

Yes, because graphical superiority worked so well for the Gamecube, N64, X-Box, Sega Dreamcast, and Sega Saturn

And when more people get HDTVs they will want an HD game console to go with it.

By the time that a significant number of people have HDTV's, the next gen will probably be starting.

When the BIG games come out on 360/PS3 that cannot be resisted.
What games are you talking about.  I have yet to see a game that "cannot be resisted"

When PS3 and/or 360 get a price drop.

And the far cheaper Nintendo console, which is selling for a profit?  Nintendo can easily match any price drop made by the other companies.  Basically, the Wii will be far cheaper than the competition.

When people realize that PS3 has a motion sensor in it's controller as well.

  The Wii's motion sensing is to the PS3's tilt sensing as a modern gamepad is to a joystick and 1 button.

Your "arguments" are opinions at best, completely false at worst.  Feel free to try again

They will contine to put out first forbidden>Silvereign

no psp had the more support and more games still ds did better

Great post... But, I think the 360 has a short comming when it comes to the range of games. A short comming that thePS3 might have also. It might be the power of those machines actually though there'd be nothing wrong with making a budget game for them..
