Sensationalist title.
The problem is the game was already developed more than a year ago, and never with the intent of coming to the west. They can't change the game now. They did say they will keep this is mind for future games in the series though. I wish they had been foresighted enough to include this in the game to begin with though, that's for sure.

So you're saying they were only intentionally discriminating against homosexuals in the East?

Nah, they made the game catered to Japanese sensibilities, which are culturally very different from western sensibilities.
This is one of those "damned if you do, damned if you don't" things. Nintendo is a family company and they have no beliefs when it comes to social issues. They're better of not taking a stand rather than pissing someone off. I'm all for gay rights, btw.
Sensationalist title?
The truth you mean?
You import your personalized characters into the game. You name them. You give them a personality. You give them a voice. They just can't fall in love if they're gay.
Shame on Nintendo.
I agree, I wish they had included that feature in the game, don't get me wrong. My point about sensationalism is that the game finished development in December 2012, so of course they weren't going to go back and add it in now.
@inb4uall: oh shoot I totally misread the title, I thought it was Nintendo confirms no "Quality of Life" which was a rumored console. :p

So there's no gay people in Japan?

It's always best to just do what's most inclusive for EVERYONE. The loud minority always quiets down. I don't think Mass Effect saw any decline in sales when they introduced gay relationships.
You still get the same options for creating a Mii, whether you are making a man or woman. You could probably get around this by just changing the gender on your Mii.
@PurpleMan5000: That beats the point. Why can't they just be themselves? In terms of coding it's something even a patch can fix as it's not something that deeply alters the mechanics of the game in any real way.
Oh, I agree. Nintendo should really get with the times. I don't like the way games like The Sims do it, either, though. My sim on The Sims 3 would mate with any and everyone if I left him unchecked. It would be better if you could just set the sexual orientation up front. I can see how a company like Nintendo, who is marketing this game to kids as well as adults, might feel uncomfortable asking for your Mii's sexual orientation, though.

Of course, not giving the option is in itself taking a stand, and it's pissing people off.

Who are they going to piss off, bigots? What a shame that would be...
Considering the whole point of the game is to live a virtual life this is a pretty big oversight.

Nintendo certainly ins't practicing the Live, Learn and Love lifestyle.

People shouldn't have to do a crappy workaround for something that should be in the game in the first place.

Except Nintendo never intended that.
"Nintendo never intended to make any form of social commentary with the launch of 'Tomodachi Life'. The relationship options in the game represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation. We hope that all of our fans will see that 'Tomodachi Life' was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game, and that we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary."
I agree that they should have the option but I think it's dumb that they commented openly about it. It's a miracle this game is even being localized and the fact it's made by people with different issues in their day to day lives, means I think it's silly to criticize them too harshly for it.
Why do they have to keep pushing their agenda on everything?? Seriously it's not that big a deal. *Oh but it has to do with real life and stuff* yeah well i bet it wont show the miis going to the bathroom or pay taxes or everyday life situations nobody wants to see. Let private life and whats behind closed doors stay there. Stop forcing this crap on a damn game.
I'm all for supporting same sex marriages and being able to express themselves freely. I'm not even one of those "it's okay if you do it, just don't do it in front of me" type of people. But seriously.. I think people have more important things to worry about than a game not including same sex marriages. It's such a small thing I don't see the big deal, and I do believe that it's not a type of commentary by Nintendo or that they are trying to please certain groups.
I've never believed in corporate responsibility regarding these types of issues. If Nintendo doesn't want it in there game, so be it.
It a game for kids not a homosexual gay pride hot button topic. This is bullshit how little things get blown up to major news.

People making a big deal about this need to get a life.
For once I agree with you....and two threads about this.....really?
Nintendo's been spending too much time around it's ghetto friends. Picking up all sorts of bad habits and terrible lingo. And now they decide to put it into actual practice, shame on them!
What the hell? How did this thread get less posts and yet the dupe by FreedoFreeLife gets more post, no problem?
@nintendoboy16: I was wondering the same thing, it's probably because freedomfree added some bait with his post as opposed to just a link here.
